What Should The Edmonton Oilers Do With Evander Kane?

Спорт

In today's #oilers discussion I talk about the Evander Kane situation in Edmonton and what I think might be the best course of action moving forward. Kane, now entering his 4th season with the Oilers, has never played a full 82 games in a season in his career. He turns 33 in August and has been hampered by injuries which makes bouncing back to his career average in goal scoring and production unlikely. What do YOU think the Oilers should do with Evander Kane? Can he bounce back? Should he be placed on LTIR to clear cap space in the regular season? Is there a team out there willing to trade for him? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below! #nhl #edmontonoilers

They should have him finally get the surgey he should have gotten at the mid point of last season the day before the season starts, and have him start the year on LTIR. He can then have a miraculous recovery where he's ready for game 1 of the playoffs, like every other team in the league would do.

I do think people really underestimate the hand injury and what it takes to get over it. I get grosses out thinking about it, think about him. He probably still feels it. He has the scar to show. You had a good story about being a kid. It really speaks to the trauma people face when confronted with these types of major injuries and the long term effects. -I'd keep him and tell him to play as you advised. He has a good shot, and plays heavy on a team of lighter playing players. -I could also see using him in a trade to upgrade the D for a top 2.

If he goes on LTIR for the entire regular season then should we maybe consider keeping Kane beyond that? Skinner is signed for just 1 year and he's probably going to post stupid stats and price himself out of an extension with us. Kane could then fill that void as LW2.

Kane when he is on top of his game; is a hard guy to replace. He checks a lot of boxes you want to see come playoffs. However his injuries are catching up to him. He's beginning to show his age. If he can be on LTIR for the remainder of the year it would really help both him and the Oilers this year. I'm hoping he's able to do that.

The spin side of keeping injury prone players is the option of LTIR. What qualities & elements of their game makes a player a valuable addition. With Kane & Nurse its their willingness to play a rugged some times nasty physical game, much needed element still imo. Look how Florida & some other teams try to run over other teams and push them around or intimidate. Edit. Need deterrents or enforcers still imo.

A healthy Kane with a “healthy “ attitude, would help the team immensely. He can definitely be a factor in a long playoff series. However, we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors and whether or not he’s considered a good teammate by his peers. As of what he last looked like on the ice, no, he’s not useful. His injuries have been substantial and he hasn’t recovered. I would love to see him at his best, playing top 6, but this upcoming camp may just push him out of the lineup.

Yeah, it's too bad we had to give him that contract - if he made around Ekholm's money I could live with it. Seems like every team has a player like that (contending team anyway) and when Nurse is good he is very good. He has all the natural talent in the world, he's big, an excellent skater, great shot, good passer, can be mean and can be physical. However, his hockey IQ has a lot to be desired. When he's not thinking right (which is about half the games he plays) he is brutal.

JFresh posted Kane's player card today on his Twitter/x feed, and it's not pretty. With the addition of Jeff Skinner and Arvidsson, there's no room for him in the top 6. Kane needs to get healthy. Personally, I think he should have been LTIRd last year, but the pressure on the team to get out of the basement likely contributed to him playing more than he should have. LTIR him, till late march. Its an easy sell to him and then if he has a good playoff make a decision then. Going off the vids topic: As far as lineups go the Oilers have a chance to do something very rare with a cap era team, and that is run 4 very solid lines with balanced time. The Mcd line should target no more than18 mins a night plus PP time. Dry line 16 mins, Rico 14 mins and 4th at 12 mins a night. Try to keep any player under 21 mins max. This would leave the star players fresh for critical games during the season and the playoffs. I would also push RNH down the line up every few games to either 3rd LWor 4th LW/C. This opens up room for Holloway (and his speed) to play up with the prime talent. Conversly have RNH center a line with Holloway and McCloud. Dont get me wrong I think RNH is a good 2 way player, I just think he should be using that skillset to lead the kids lines vs tagging along with McDavid.

Changing the topic here, to address the rhd right shot defense position here I'd still would like the Oilers to scout/ bird dog David Jiricek of CBJ. They need to monitor the Blue Jackets closely & wait & see what Don Wadell does with Jiricek. They only have 5 signed defensemen currently on the main roster according to Puckpedia today. Ceci would be a proven veteran player & at the very worst a back up option for them. A package of either Ceci or either some other roster player like McLeod & some 2nd rnd draft picks that the Oilers have in Bakersfield someone like Lavoie or Wanner or Akey if the Jackets insist getting a right shot defenseman back. So in short a current roster player from the Oilers & a minors prospect. Or 2 -2nd rnd minor prospect for their 1st rnd # 6 taken in the draft pick David Jiricek. The kid is trending up like Durzi did & Montour imo. He expressed his displeasure of not already playing in the NHL last year could be a candidate to be moved.

When injured, it's disappointing because of what Evander brings to the rink. When he's healthy, he's the guy you want because of what he brings to the rink, and especially for the playoff push. In his first partial season, he was a smoke show in the Post. Hammering bodies, making plays, and sniping goals. If he's legit needing to properly heal, fn eh, the Oilers have enough going as was proven in the cup final to play elite competitive hockey without Kane for a few months. Now with the re-signings and added guys, it leaves little room to doubt they'll be able to handle his absence. Nurse before Kane, but that's an almost impossible move at the current cap hit, or maybe a Cici package with Ryan or McLeod? Keep Kane, LTIR, this recent draft has a lot of short contracts, which means they're driving for the cup this upcoming 24/25 season. Kane if healthy, huge upside. HUGE.

The Edmonton fan in me asks how much fear factor does healthy evander impose on players wanting to take liberties with the superstars? A healthy, reinvigorated Evander is a dangerous Evander. If I'm the Oilers I'm telling him to sit this one out.. LTIR- get properly healthy again, then reevaluate with 1 year left on his contract. Who knows? maybe his hip injury is like Kucherov's and he come back in time for the playoffs and goes beast mode?

Had he not been sliced on his hand , then after the dirty check he took hurt his hip and had a hernia from over extended activity , those are hard injuries . of course he couldn't play a full season . what a stupid thing to quote for a reason to give up on him . he scores more hat tricks in the playoffs then every oiler on the bench for easy 7 years . he scores more then 80% of the rest of the team . WE NEED TO KEEP HIM PERIOD . EVERYTHING ELSE IS NONSENSE EXCUSES TO FREE UP CAP SPACE. GET RID OF NURSE AS HE HURTS THE TEAM FARM MORE THEN HELPS AND COSTS 9.5 A YEAR.
