What Shall Indie Devs Do If Unity Goes Under?

Ойындар

#unity #flaxengine #gamedev
In this video I talk about the former and current financial woes of Unity and the fact Unity hasn't been focused on their game engine the last several years. Now there is a new engine on the block, well an engine that's been around for a while that is now being noticed, that could easily take Unity's place should the giant fall. The Flax Engine is on the course Unity should and could have traveled.

What to do: rejoice and hope the next indie top-choice doesn't blow EA execs for spare change?

Makes me feel slightly less special for using godot since everyone will be using it soon but at least I got in kind of early and the other advantages that come with that

Now you've gotta stick with it, get in good with its power-users and top brass, and sit back while the industry grabs Godot by the horns and opportunities wash over you like a tidal wave. That's what I'm doing!

I'm starting to learn UE5 now because of their pricing nonsense last year. What do you think about it and how much they walked it back? I'm still too new to have a really good understanding of it all, and I cant find many videos online outright stating if it's a true issue or not. They all just flip flop saying "some people are sticking around. It's up to you." And since I dont fully understand the issues I really need a better explanathan all the ones I've found while googling. MAYBE you're biased against Unity, but even that would yield good information woth a good detailed explanation.

I do like the Unity game engine. I have 4 games on Steam I made using Unity. I made this video because I'm concerned the way Unity Technologies has been managed for the past several years as it has been loosing money. That's why Unity did their pricing change with the runtime fee back in September 2023. They need money. They walked things back regarding the runtime fee and it's better now and not something to be afraid of if you make lots of money with the Unity engine now. But the way the finances of Unity has been managed has put its future in jeopardy. In my opinion the Flax engine would be the engine to use if Unity goes away and people want to use something similar to Unity. Flax is very similar to Unity but it's also different in some areas. Unreal Engine is a good game engine. I tried using it myself but to use Unreal I'd have to pick up visual scripting and not code anymore. The devs of Unreal don't have any API documentation for coding and want those who make games with it to just use visual scripting. I'm one of those people who likes to code as I can do things faster with code than visual scripting. In my opinion Unreal has the best graphics out of any game engine. I think Unity should have had some sort of royalty fee from the beginning. Or maybe they should have charged $5-$10 a month for the personal version instead of making it free to use. The way the runtime fee works now for Unity if you make enough money that it does apply to you then you can choose to just pay a royalty percentage OR do all the calculations necessary to pay the runtime fee. Godot is a nice engine BUT making a game with Godot is a lot more time consuming. With Godot, to me, it seems there are a lot more steps to get things done than other engines. It's not fun or intuitive to make a game with Godot.

How are you having trouble with Godot, not having a go. Genuinely wondering what issue you are having trouble with? Is it the scene system?

For 2d godot and for 3d unreal You would probably have two games done b4 unity complies a level with minor complexity I thank god I dropped for a more speedy engine.

For anyone too scared to leave Unity, I have a question for you. Are you a game developer or are you just a Unity developer? Yes, Unity makes game dev easy. But both Unreal and Godot, and many many other engines, do as well. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. To ensure the health of your games and your company, you need to expand your skill set beyond Unity. I personally love learning new tools. I hope people will stop acting so religious about Unity, and will learn to expand their skills. It is the only true way to have a stable game dev company.

I don't think you need the Unity company around to continue either porting or finishing up your project. You wouldn't start up a new Unity project if the Unity company went under, but you wouldn't do that now either? So the company staying afloat or going under shouldn't affect anyones decisions. So, indie devs should do nothing different, just continue porting your project to whatever new engine they chose last year.

well you better be independent from the engines then. diy engine. code from ground up. or just have a stock opensource actually free godot engine.

Maybe if they didnt aquire 2 companies for 4bil that they didnt need. They should have spent that money to work on ECS and the game engine. Sigh.

Sorry but It feels like cherry picked points. When judging if something will "go under" it would be smart to think about good stuff as well which would help it to be still afloat and then weight the ratio of good / bad making the decision of overall state Overall poorly titled video which does not represent actual content inside

Unity is in financial trouble. Their balance sheet is publicly available. It's been in the negative for years. That's why previous management did the runtime fee fiasco last year. They need money. Unity is a great engine, it could be better. I think it would be better if previous management had stayed focused on the Unity engine instead of buying other companies. But It doesn't matter how good the engine is or how many features it has if the company finances stay in the negative. If that continues the company will cease to exist. I'm not saying it will happen tomorrow but if things don't change it will happen. Hopefully the new CEO can correct Unity's course.

I don't think Unity will go under. More likely it will be bought out. If that's the case then choose your doom. Apple, Microsoft, Meta or Amazon will be the new overlords.. If I was just starting a new project I would do it in Godot. Fullstop. But I'm sticking with Unity for the moment. The infrastructure is still there. The Asset store, resources and the components.. Too much to restart my current project in another engine. I have tried but the release date I set would be delayed and I just want to finish it and publish.. Next project, Godot for sure.

Unity isn't going anywhere. Just because people love to have something to hate, doesn't mean that they will stop using Unity. Most people who say things like "Unity is dead" never even used it and never made a game in their life

It's like programming languages, everyone tries these young, fancy language like Rust Go Zig etc., but none of them are gonna kill C++. Unity has been around for years and they just got rid of most of the guys that caused their PR nightmare.

8:59 Bullshit. Any engine using thousands of object have issue. That why you will use good code design, ECS ,compute shader or Job System when you want this kind of game on Unity. Unity is may be not working fast enough on the cose that the hater want. But i saw update and new good code every year. (And compatibility with all platform maintained) Unity is not going to stop. Only the pricing or the way of paying them will. That not a bad thing if it allows the tool to keep beeing up to date.

The Flax Engine can do 64-bit world precision. Unity can't. Unity could if the devs bothered to included that in their engine. "Flax Engine by default uses 32-bit precision (single precision, float type) to represent object coordinates in the world. This gives enough quality for most games and yields solid performance. However, for games with larger worlds, we recommend using 64-bit precision (double precision, double type) and enabling Large Worlds features in the engine. This allows the game scenes to be as large as the whole Solar System while still maintaining good quality and precision."(docs.flaxengine.com/manual/editor/large-worlds/index.html?tabs=code-csharp)
