What's your KNITTING SKILL LEVEL? Test how good a knitter you really are!

Knitting is often a solitary hobby and it can be difficult to compare yourself with others. On top of that, a lot of patterns actually ask for a certain knitting skill level. Often you find things like "suitable for advanced beginners" in the description? But what does that mean and do you fall within this category?
This video is a simple self-test so you can find out your knitting skill level.
However, I do want you to know that there is no global knitting authority that defined these levels. I more or less developed them myself and within the framework of what most designers use these days.
This means, at the end of the day this is just an arbitrary categorization and you shouldn't put too much weight on it. Knitting is a hobby and it should bring you joy.
That being said, I hope this video may also act as a guideline for the exciting journey that lies ahead of you. And I trust you view it in that light.

Hey Norman! maybe you have a crafty Cricuit loving person in your life? Or maybe an etsy shop you already promote on your page you could work with....I think branding your emblem (the ball of yarn with 2 straight needles with NimbleNeedles above) Would make an amazing sticker, Keychain or personalized notions bag. I would buy it, and you already have an Etsy store 😉 Food for thought my friend.

Fun video. My 14-year-old granddaughter and I watched it together. She has been knitting since she was three years old and has progressed to designing her own patterns, with a preference for lace shawls. She has also started a group of young knitters, and after teaching them how to knit has a group that knit for both charity and for themselves. After 60 years of nearly daily knitting, while based on your definition I am firmly a master knitter, I consider myself just a knitter. There is always something new to learn or to try. Happy knitting!

We all had different journeys in this craft and it's fascinating to hear how other people learned

Master knitter. Knitting is part of me. I knit every day. However, your tutorial on gloves inspired me to make them for the first time. I liked that it is a recipe as I have never knitted from a pattern without altering it. I never understood that my skillset was so advanced so thank you for your tutorial. It was fun and informative. Your videos are very enjoyable, thank you. I have designed and knitted many items and even given help and support to others on you tube and face book. I live in an isolated area and have little contact with others but my knitting has kept me going and I have even sold some here. Yarn is very difficult to obtain but I have gradually found suppliers. This has also contributed to my skillset because I have had to design my own patterns. Once again, thank you for your channel it helps me feel connected.

So, I’m a master knitter then! Thank you for this fun walk through! I’m a trainer and have been for 20 years, from team building to clinical IT systems, and yarn crafts and machine embroidery are my go to hobbies. I do craft fairs and sell items occasionally. But I create for the love of doing, not selling. I was surrounded by crafters, my aunt was a seamstress, my Nan enjoyed tapestry, my mother a qualified knitting machine pattern maker. It’s a big part of my life ☘️

I started knitting and crocheting at school. For myself in the beginning, for my 6 children, for 5 grandchildren and now for myself again. All socks, shawls, gloves, hats. Some vests, nice summer tops, intricately patterned lace scarves. I learned everything myself and there are for sure many mistakes. Because of that I like your channel. I have many things to learn.

My granddaughters and I watched your video together and enjoyed it. My 16 year old granddaughter predicted she would be an "experienced beginner". She began knitting at age 3, designing at 10, and started her own knitting club - after teaching her friends to knit at 12. I would rate her higher, but as she says, there is always more to learn. Her sister is a beginner who knits potholders for gifts, and at this point has no desire to knit more. By your ranking, after 60+ years, of knitting nearly every day, I could be considered a master knitter. While I can knit anything I choose wirh relative ease, there is always something new to learn, and technique variations to execute as we play with our sticks and string.

Cool video, I was surprised to have reached experienced 1 according to your scale :) The way I learn might be a bit strange because I always have a very concrete project in mind and I learn the new techniques that are required for it as I need them. Also, about specialization: I tend to have periods when I am interested in one thing, and I don't knit anything else for a month or two. Then when I have had my fill, I become interested in something else and don't touch the old obsession for quite some time.

Now I can proudly say I'm an Intermediate level 3.5 knitter due in large part to great teachers like you. I’ve been knitting since I was 5 and consider myself an intermediate/advanced knitter. I’ve knit multiple Aran and lace sweaters but have never really done much colour work. I don’t think I could ever call myself a master knitter because to me, there’s always so much more to learn and I love that. I love that even if I spend years learning colourwork, there will still be countless people out there better than me who I can learn from.

My mother taught me to read my knitting with every stitch she taught me when I was 9. My second project included cables because I didn't know they were hard. That's when I learned to read patterns. Mom also taught me that patterns are really just suggestions, and I frequently adapted them Other things I learned as I needed but mostly I crocheted. When I was 56, I discovered magic loop (even though I had used traveling loop for years to avoid using double pointed needles) and I started knitting socks. I rarely do any other type of needlework now. I have become addicted to knitting socks, cowls and shawls in fingering weight yarn. I use worsted weight only for baby blankets and lap robes. I can knit kace but don't enjoy really fussy lace patterns. I love using basic stitches like knit, purl, slip stitches. yarn overs and pass slip stitches overs to create complicated looking patterns. This has been an entertaining video.

Interesting video, Norman! Wouldn't have considered myself a 'Master Knitter' but most of what you described is applicable. Designing pieces, subbing yarns and yarn weights, using knitter's graph paper to achieve shapes in new gauge, recreating pieces from an image, using visuals as inspiration for own creations, etc. Consider myself more of a 'process' knitter as find all the number crunching and problem solving of figuring out what's needed to obtain a certain result is usually a more rewarding challenge than the successful 'product/FO' itself. Being creative is a way of life, for me, and consider knitting to be the one area in which I"m able to excel... but embrace anything which gets the creative juices flowing.

I’m advanced 1 if you don’t count the color work. I just never had the desire, but I really should! I learned to crochet and knit backstage as an actress and now as a child guardian, and one of my greatest joys has been teaching the children I care for backstage how to knit and crochet. Some really take to it and advance far. All of the kids in the last revival if Les Miz completed a magic loop hat, some even with cables. Many still knit all the time and I’m so happy to have added this skill to their lives. Thank you for your lovely videos.

My first project was Granny's favorite dishcloth. my MIL taught me and said it would help me to learn the basics (knit stitch, yarn over, increase, and decrease). I can tell you, I cursed more than I would like to admit! But eventually I got it. I am a continental knitter, and the purl stitch was one of the hardest things for me to learn. I did eventually get it, and now I don't even think about it. I am firmly in the intermediate category with a toe into experienced. My goal is to just have fun with it. If I never get to Advanced or Master, I am OK with that. I just make what I want, and before I know it, I've learned something new.

Proud to be an advanced knitter after only 3 years of practice. This video really put into perspective how much I've learned! Sweaters are my area of expertise, I've knit dozens of them and I just love how different each one is from the next. There's still so many more things to learn and I hope to get to master knitter someday!

This is an awesome and fun little guide, loved seeing all the variations and feel confident to say that with my almost a year off and on of knitting and learning I am an Advanced Beginner 4 and feel that Intermediate will probably be where I am at in a few months if I continue at this pace. I love the drive to improve with goalposts, but also that they aren't intimidating or far-fetched. This makes me want to just focus on the technics I have learned and hone my skills! Thanks!

I also was lucky to learn how to knit as a child in school and from my mom, and love that it took a lifetime of picking up and putting down the needles to get to Advanced level! I am happy that I didn’t have to rush to get here, acquired many skills and stashes over time (depending on my economic level!) and now in my early 50s I love my craft room and the room to knit cable stitches to my heart’s content. Love your videos!

Experienced level 1 or so, is what I think my knitting level is. Your story was a wonderful way to figure it out. I have been knitting only two and a half years, but I have learned so much and mostly through youtube. I have found a passion for fair isle hats and mittens and have designed my own patterns. I like to challenge myself with new techniques and projects regularly to keep learning more. When I first began knitting, I would always try a new project with a new skill I didn't know. There is so much more fun to learn and perfect in knitting! Thank you for your videos.

Great video! Definitely made me look back at what I’ve done and feel accomplished. I started knitting maybe 9-10 months now and would consider myself an advanced beginner or maybe beginning intermediate. I’ve made 3 pairs of socks, several scarves, a lace shawl, a shirt, scrunchies, and am now working a reversible double-knit potholder. The mistakes in my work always stick out to me so much, but when I give them to people they think it’s just incredible and don’t notice them. So excited to continue growing! Next I’m going to make a beautiful leaf patterned tank top for my sister, super excited as it uses the mattress stitch at the end which I’ve seen so much of but never had to use and I feel like it’s a rite of passage 😂

Great test. I'm an intermediate who skipped cables and colourwork, for now. I also love knitting in the round with magic loop and I always have a pair of socks on the my needles. Because I'm an advanced crocheter, it helps my knitting - especially with tension control, stitch definition and garment construction. I know a few basic knit stitches and patterns however I forget them easily. I doubt if I could ever not watch myself knit. Thanks again!

Thank you for this video. My first knitted project was a baby sweater ,with cables, raglan sleeves and a zipper in the sleeve seam. I learned everything from the how to knit book that had the pattern in it. The sweater turned out wonderful even made out of cotton rug yarn and I had no idea what a cable needle was (had to ask my mother-in-law) .That started my journey 53 years ago. I have never stopped learning and hunger for more. Thank you for all you do for us knitters I have learned new techniques from you. Thank you again.

I came out to intermediate level 5! I have so many new techniques and stitches to try still and I can't wait. I tend to design projects and then learn what I need to to make them. Experimenting with different textures and techniques is the best part, and it is a great creative outlet. I am so grateful my grandmother got me started when I was young. These videos really help me learn new techniques but remind me of ones I have forgotten over the years.

fascinating to me how the projects you do alter what skills you acquire. I first learnt to knit as a child, but that was mostly scarves. My first proper project more recently was socks. I've also made a few shawls and a hat so knitting in the round and lace are both extremely comfortable for me but I have no idea how to do a mattress stitch because I've never needed it. So much of this hobby is picking up knowledge on the go - I love it.

Ive been knitting for nearly 20 years, but much more in the last few years (I even recently learned crochet). Thank you for all the work you must have put into creating this scoring system 👏👏. I have been knitting for about 60 years and it still brings me joy. According to your system I would count as a Master knitter but there are always some new skills to learn and so I will continue to think of myself as “experienced”. I don’t design patterns as I hate doing the maths - always prefer to adjust them for the person I am knitting for - but respect those who enjoy doing that. What a fun way to spend a bit of time! Thank you 🏅

One of the things I love most about knitting, is that there's always new things to learn. Fx. I stuck with the long tail CO for years, it worked perfectly, so why change it. But I did a testknit that "forced" to try a new CO technique and I loved it! Since then I've challenged myself and learned more COs and BOs, because it's fun and I love having more options now ☺

Thanks! Knitting is such a personal experience for me: I started out as a child and with the basic stitch as taught by my mother. In college, I didn’t know there were such things as “patterns” and so I engineered my own. Looking back, of course, the efforts were funny, but it gave me a self-reliance and a deeper understanding of what could be. I invented techniques and so forth. Then lace knitting became a favorite. I was enchanted at the beauty I could make with “string”! In maturity, I’ve enjoyed following patterns (learned so much!) and watching videos (not available in my childhood). I’ve learned some cool things and have gotten much better. But I’m humbly aware that there is so much more to learn and to practice. It’s all fun. Thanks for you clear thought process; thus was a nice video.

I’m pretty much an intermediate 4 by your scale with Fair isle skipped and a few experienced techniques already mastered. It was good to think about this and realize I’m no longer a new knitter and congratulation myself on all I’ve learned in the hat couple of years. A lot of that thanks to your wonderful instructions. I use both Portuguese knitting and Continental with the Norwegian pearl. And to your point, I enjoy knitting and being able to switch between crochet, Tunisian and knitting!!! 🧶💕🧶

What a great journey through knitting skills! Thank you too, for pointing out that the joy of knitting is not related to the number of skills required beyond the basics. Based on your story, I came in at "Experienced - 3." I have been knitting for decades, but it is only in the last 4-5 years that I decided to dive into more complicated stitch patterns, garment knitting, color-work and adjusting patterns. I am thoroughly enjoying the ability to make a wider variety of items, but it is the act of knitting, transforming yarn into an item, that I most enjoy.

Intermediate 3. I have only been knitting for a couple of years but have been crocheting for more than 40 years. Some of the skills I learned from crocheting translate into knitting such as understanding fibers and gauging projects. Learning to knit was a short leap from my other craft. You are always a joy to watch. You have inspired me to learn new techniques. I would probably watch your videos even if I were not honing my knitting skills.
