My opinion about "Do you need a CS degree to become a programmer?"

I went to a university where you have lots of software projects to practice the programming. But also the theory helped a lot in understanding the deeper levels of how your code works. But I know your feeling and without the practice I would feel the same. Shoutout to the Stuttgart Media university

Some universities are wising up to this and offering software developer specialties, but honestly, I have listened to a professor in one of these programs brag about what activities the students would do over a certain time frame... Compared to the better coding immersion programs, I was not impressed. One course in uni, surrounded by general ed, may be 3 hours of your week in class. It takes months to do a single decent project that you would do in a single sprint during an immersion program.

Ehh, you applied to the college. Programs have their degree requirements open for public viewing. That one is on you. I have gen ed requirements. I make time for my projects, work, and university. Some people simply aren't built for college.

@@ryanmartinez7577 I'm a software engineer with years in the industry. The professor I was referring to was speaking to me at a local tech meetup. You shouldn't jump to insults if you're presuming this much. Btw I have a master's degree.

What is an immersion program? Any tips for someone starting out? I’m 26 and feel like I started too late 😂

Correct, the computer science degree is a degree in a science. Most 18 year olds going into college don't really know what that means. Please go to a good college. Research the program the colleges offer. My recommendation to people is to minor in computer science if all you want to do is learn how to code. Joining a bootcamp is also another, more than likely better, option.

They'll teach you algos and data structures. That's good to know for any coder.

@@phir9255 indeed! In my view and experience, learning algorithms and data structures is critical for a computer science graduate. It builds the mindset to solve problems.

@@phir9255 there's plenty more to computer science than algorithms and data structures, but you're right. that is critical. I'm saying too many kids go to college for a degree and then complain that their degree is demanding and long winded. I am getting my bachelor's. I see these types of people everyday. My point is, if you have this attitude, drop out and go to a boot camp. Stop taking up space in impacted programs.

Luckily I'm doing a Computer Science (Software Engineering) degree. Good amount of CS like computer architecture and AI & Data Science plus all the app and modern web dev using React, NodeJS and Docker for the emphasis in software engineering. It's a mixed degree as some of the universities pathways have no web dev at all. It's a big field.

I studied computer science at the best university in my country. You know what happened after I graduated? I was taken to many years of unpaid forced labour in a military labour camp. People abroad don't understand how my country is the most sadistic country in the world. They think that the Israeli Auschwitz is a rich country but it is a labour camp where food costs like gold because of greedy local monopolies and people work hard non stop seven days a week to be able to afford to eat.

I don't know nothing about situation in your country, but unfortunately unfair things like what you described is very common appearance in current world. A lot of people just can't exist and fulfill their desires and dreams in country where they were born 😔

Computer Science degree is, well, for scientists, not for developers. It's like expecting that organic chemistry degree will prepare you for a job as s chef in restaurant.

If I didn't have a CS degree I would just be looking for a job where a CS degree isn't required. From my experience, it's the majority now.

As I know, most big tech companies are looking for a degree, and it makes sense to me since there is high competition. There will always be a guy as experienced as you and also have a degree, which is a plus, right? If you say I bring these skills to the table, then there will be a guy who also brings the same skills and has a degree. That is the case for the places where the competition is the maximum. What amount of knowledge and experience would make HR decide to choose you instead of those guys? What could be the thing that you can do but they can't? A degree is always a plus. You can land jobs at the end of the day, but I don't think your options would be promising.@@artem_se
