The Stan cameo in this was the first to reach theaters after his passing. I remember there being audible crying in the theater during that scene when I first went to see it. When Stan says that he’ll miss him, the whole audience was thinking, “we’re going to miss you too!”. The movie came out five years ago and that scene, and especially that line still hit me like a ton of bricks every time I watch it.

In Peni's home universe, Richard and Mary Parker weren't killed in an aeroplane crash, meaning Ben and May adopted a child, that child being Peni. This means that when Peni says that her father died, it's still Uncle Ben who died, despite Peter not becoming Spider-Man. Poor guy can't catch a break.

Miles' history in the comics is a bit more complicated. Marvel started a new imprint called Ultimate Marvel, where they had a new universe, so that they could tell stories that didn't have decades of continuity to account for. The first and most popular title was Ultimate Spider-Man. It featured a version of Peter Parker that was much younger than one in the mainline universe. About 10 years of Ultimate Spider-Man comics later, they did a storyline where Peter died. However, soon afterwards a "new" Spider-Man appeared...Miles Morales. A few years later, there was a big crossover event called Secret Wars, where the entire Ultimate universe (and every other universe) was destroyed. A few survivors remained on a world pieced together from some of the different Earths, with both the mainline Spider-Man and the Ultimate Spider-Man (Miles Morales) being among them. That story ends with the re-creation of the multiverse, but instead of going back to "his" universe, Miles (along with his friends and family) end up staying in the mainline universe (alongside Peter Parker).

6:41 This comic is actually based on Amazing Fantasy #15 with the look of Peter and his suit being pulled from this comic. It's also his Earth-616 Mainline Universe origin story so it's interesting to see this in the Ultimate Universe Miles Universe is inspired by the Ultimate Universe known as Earth-1610. It was Marvels way of creating a new modernized continually, basically a starting point for a new generation who did not want to jump into a Universe with 60+ years of comic books making it extremely difficult for fans to just jump into Spider-Man comics. This universe started with Ultimate Spider-Man in 2000 set in the same year introducing us to a 15 year old Peter Parker modernized for this decade along with a few changes to his origin but for the most part it was pretty similar. 11 years later Miles was introduced and became Spider-Man like we see in this movies. In the comics there's a 15 year age difference between Miles and Peter with Miles being around 13 and Peter late 20's when they first meet. Peter Parker of the Ultimate Universe does not train Miles directly but after the death of Peter by the hands of his villians Miles takes up the mantle of Spider-Man. Green Gobin looking like a massive monster demon is also accurate to the Ultimate Universe. As this was a new universe disconnected from the mainline Earth-616 the writers could put interesting spins new spins on characters so instead of Norman being a super strength man in a Goblin suit and Glider he was turned into a demon like monster after he injected himself with a failed Super Solider Serum mixed with the same Spider dna that bite Peter. The biggest differences between the comics and this film is how long Miles and Peter knew each other. In the movie they barely get time to chat before Spider-Man dies while in the comics Miles and Peters were good friends for a few years before his death. The whole Spider-Verse aspect is also completely new and has nothing to do with the origin or Miles or the death of Ultimate Spider-Man. This happened later when Miles was the new Spider-Man where he actually meet up with a bunch of alternate Spider people and even meet the Spider-Man of Earth-616 mainline Marvel universe who after the Secret War event and the destruction of the Ultimate Universe Miles actually lives on Earth-616 now with this slightly older Spider-Man. Another difference is Peter Parker being blonde. This isn't hair dye as we also see a young blonde Peter with uncle Ben so interesting indeed. Also Miles Universe has some interesting brand differences from Koca-Cola instead of Coca-Cola to PDNY instead of NYPD just odd differences compared to our own universe and that of Peter B Parker. In the Ultimate comics brand names and pop Culture in general is the same as ours but I do like this change. On the topic of Peter P Parker he's from the Mainline Marvel Universe known as Earth-616 which you can see on Kingpins display. This is pretty much where all the mainline Marvel comics take place but like the Ultimate Universe this is all very much an adaptation of these universes so it's not one to one accurate. The MCU for example has also started referring to itself as Earth-616 as well.

Spider-Verse has some excellent characters and I especially love the contrast between the two Peters 🍕 It really is the best Spiderman movie so far. The orbs or “dot” aesthetic to the dimensional energies of the portal generator are known within the comic industry and comic fandom as “Kirby Dots” or “Kirby Krackle”. They are named for their creator, Jack Kirby. It was a common style he used for depicting crazy SciFi energies like the portal in the this movie, spaceship propulsion, eldritch magic, you name it. Jack was a very talented artist that provided the visual side of most of Marvel’s pantheon. He was the artist to Stan Lee’s writing on the creation of the Fantastic Four, Avengers, X-Men, and many others. He even created many well known characters with other writers like Captain America, Red Skull, the Cosmic Cube (Tesseract in the MCU), and many well known DC characters as well since he worked for both companies at various times in his career. He is also a sore spot of comic history for many fans as he passed away in the early 90’s. Many years before such old school comic creators would ever receive the proper recognition for their creations and the impact it has had on our popular culture over the last not quite a century. I for one would have liked to live in a world where Jack lived much longer and he and Stan got to do paired Waldorf and Statler or Odd Couple style duel cameos in all of the past MCU movies together…

Peter Porker, the amazing Spider-Ham, is a well established comics character… and before this movie popularized him, a go to obscure reference for a podcaster I listen to. He’s let off that a bit since this came out. Also, Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, is a Marvel villain that shows up a few places, both animated and live action. He’s rendered in a much more stylized way in this movie for obvious reasons, but he’s one of the few non super powered people who can go toe to toe with various super heroes. He overtrains himself so that he’s almost solid muscle, virtually no body fat on him according to the comics.

Two noteworthy details that I always appreciate when I see this movie: Olivia "Doc Ock" Octavius says her friends call her Liv. When the villains break into Aunt May's house, Aunt May goes, "Oh great, it's Liv..." ...Some history between them, it seems! Also, toward the end, Doc Ock is fighting the whole "Spider gang", and when Miles finally shows up she looks surprised and says "Spider-Man..?" Not only did she somehow immediately clock that he wasn't from another universe like the others, she also instantly recognized him as her world's Spider-Man. Despite having believed Spider-Man was dead.

Interesting facts about this movie. Peter Parker - The Amazing Spider-man, Peter B. Parker - The Sensational Spider-man (I may have them mixed up). There is another in Sensational Spider-man. Sony animation created new work processes to "match" the color bleed from comics. You'll notice that there is a slight edge discrepancy, between where the "edge" is, and where the color of the items ends. Most notable on the background. Miles was animated at a different speed (28 frames per second, IIRC) while everything else was done at a lower speed (14 frames). That way his movements are more fluid. Yes, those spider persons all have their own comics. Peni Parker's spider's bot is called SP//DER, and was introduced in 2014. Spider-man Noir (voiced by Nic Cage) had his first comic run in 2009. Spider-Ham was from 1983. Spider-Gwen was first published in 2015 as a 5 part comic that had such popularity that it became its own thing. Spider-man 2099 (the end credits guy) was introduced in 1992. These do not account for the Spider-man in the Defenders, the Avengers, or when he teams up in Deadpool/X-Men comics. Yes a Spider-verse 2 is in the works, and may (I hope I hope I hope) have Silk and Mistress Web (two other spider persons). Madam Web is an anti-villain more than a hero, but is also in control of the Spiderverse. And, of course, yes. That costume shop owner was Stan Lee.

    - It will be a trilogy; the next one, Across the Spider-Verse, comes out on Jun 3. The post credits scence shows Spider-Man 2099, who is in the sequel. You can look up the trailers for it. - This is largely based on the Marvel comic universe (which is not the same as the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Miles is a polarizing figure amonst fans of the Spider-Man comics. To simplify the explanation, in the comics, Marvel introduced him as a replacement to Peter Parker (the Peter B. Parker in this movie is basically an older (a modern, in 2018) OG Peter Parker from the "main" Marvel comic universe, since you see him in his home universe with a Coca Cola sign), and they did it in a pretty ham fisted way. Marvel had to back track on that when Miles was not accepted to a sufficient extent in the fan base. They have had more success with Miles being clearly set as the Spider Man of his own universe (and the Spider-Verse, which is also from the comics, allowing some expansion of the stories available) while keeping the OG Peter Parker as the Spider Man of the main Marvel Comics Universe. All that being said, this movie is widely considered as the best Spider-Man movie. - Yes there is a Spider Gwen comic, but there has also been a main Marvel universe Spider Woman (Jessica Drew) since 1977. An alternate universe version of Jessica will be in Across the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Ham's been around since I was a kid in the '80s (his first appearance was in '83). There were tons of other animal-themed Marvel characters, although I can only remember Hulk-Bunny and Captain Americat off the top of my head... oh, and MJ was a water buffalo for some inexplicable reason. The rest of the characters are somewhat newer, with Miles popping up in 2011. I'd stopped collecting comics by the time Miles came on the scene, but I had all the comics with Spider-Man 2099 (from the end credit scene). He first showed up in 1993 in Marvel's 2099 line... which was a bunch of comics from the Marvel Universe's future (well, one possible future) in (you guessed it) 2099. Miguel O'Hara was actually a pretty good character and I enjoyed his book for the most part. As for the movie... it's a BLAST!! Wonderfully done, start to finish.

impossible not to share the reactor's enthusiasm whenever someone watches this for the first time. it's such a blast. one thing no live action super hero movie (especially now that they're so often directed by committee) can really capture is the personal style of an individual cartoonist, what makes a steve ditko spider-man different from a todd mcfarlane spider-man etc. some people do bring their own style to live action supes (tim burton, the o.g. raimis) but that's why this is the best super hero flick to me: the design and animation is so visually distinctive and unique-to-itself that it really does feel like a comic come to life, even beyond the more obvious "comic book-y" touches.

Great choice! The animation really makes the most of the visual opportunities and provides allowances for what would be, in live action, over-the-top witty banter.

Btw the post-credits scene is from the 1967 animated Spider-man cartoon (with the catchy theme song). In the Spider-Verse comics, they were training in that dimension because it's impossible to die or even get badly hurt there :)

Jen, to answer your question, yes, all of these versions of Spider-Man are from the comics (well, I guess except for the blonde Spider-Man, which was created for this movie). As for which ones have their own comic books, Spider-Ham had his own book I think in the 70s and 80s. Miles I think got his own book in the 90s or 2000s. Spider-Gwen I think got her book starting around 2012 and I think it's still going today. I think Spider-Man Noir had a book in the 90s. I don't know that Peni Parker ever had her own book. (Not 100% sure on any of it though. lol) Edit: As for the post-credit scene, that's Spider-Man 2099. He had his own comic book in the 90s.

Miles is one of the most popular newer heroes there are multiple comic runs about him, featuring him in team-ups, etc. He first appeared in Ultimate Spider-Man. And yes, theres a Spider-Gwen comic. Theres also a Gwenpool comic, her name is a mix of Gwen Stacy and Deadpool and fun fact: she has no relation to either of those characters. Yeah, comics can be fun sometimes (But i heavily recommend the first Gwenpool comic!)

Bloody good show! That was a high octane reaction. Totally unreal watching you getting everything you wanted….dope lady villain and heroine, story, animation, perfect music not to mention the Spider Gang and Aunt May. And you nailed it Spider-Jen...that is what is missing from the live action Spideys...the sense of absolutely anything goes which the animation totally bathes in. The closest in my estimation that the live actions come to the animations are the sequences where Parker is web slinging and the Doc Oc fight on down the bldg in the second movie. Champagne wishes Spider-Jen and as we say in the Marvel universe...’Nuff Said!!!

Spider-Man, in the comics, does not have the ability to shoot webs from his body. Instead, he invented a fluid that turns into webs when exposed to air and shooters he wears on his wrist. When Sam Raimi was doing the movies with Tobie, he felt it was unrealistic for a teenager to invent such an incredible thing, so made the webs come out of his wrists. The Andrew Garfield Spider-Man, Tom Holland Spider-Man, and this film all use mechanical web shooters and chemical webs.

Before you feel sorry for Kingpin, remember, his family left because they couldn't condone who he has become; also remember, even if his plan was totally successful, with NO complications due to the tamper, his goal was not to return his family from the dead, but to STEAL SOME OTHER VERSIONS FAMILY. Somewhere, in the multiverse, is a version who succeeded, and thus also somewhere there is a version that has had HIS wife and son stolen from HIM [and that version probably is blaming the wrong person].
