Great video again! Indeed, for some of my friends, spending 50 $/€ IS a lot of money. Luckily, I have more disposable income, so I can buy the books, and play them with my friends. Additionally, I love to collect stuff - so we have a win-win situation. Runequest is one of my favorite settings - I know you agree - and the books are not cheap. As you mentioned, there is a Humble Bundle right now for ALL the books of present edition for less than 20$/€. That litterally saves you hundreds of bucks. What I like about many of the newer systems like Shadowdark, Knave, Forbidden Lands, the Without Number series, are the random tables. They give you adventure ideas without the need to buy dozens of adventures.

Thanks for another good episode, Jeff! Out of 'em all, for me, I find Savage Worlds the best value for its versatility and utility, but (like the Madman, I'm another one of those all-in PEGinc Kickstarter pledgers!). Definitely gonna jump on in with that Runequest Humble Bundle. I've got about half of the books (with PDFs courtesy of the FLGS Bits & Mortar people), but you've definitely piqued my interest with the Cults volumes. Seems like a good idea until I can afford to pick up the hardcovers.

I would recommend Fantastic Heroes & Witchery (1e retro clone for $32) with The Monster Overhaul (goes for $60) and Marco's Market of Magical Merchandise (goes for $17) for a OSR starter. Or, if you want a complete package, Dragonslayer (B/X clone with some 1e, goes for $80). FH&W has more options for magic and player classes (fantasy to pulp to weird), but I don't like the layout and is missing monsters and magic items. Dragonslayer is more focused on dungeon crawling and has amazing art and layout. And for gamemasters, Tome of Adventure Revised ($60) and So You Want to be a Game Master ($25) are also a must have for both FH&W and Dragonslayer. If you must have an adventure Barrowmaze ($75) or Dwarrowdeep ($75) or that for that old school dungeon crawl.

Man, I love Fading Suns. I have everything from 1st & 2nd Ed, which is more than enough to run the game for the rest of my life, but sadly, I have always found it challenging to find players who were that into it. That said, I don't think they ever finished the War in Heaven series, the last of which was pretty much the one book I would have wanted/needed to have a complete picture of the setting. I'd be tempted to use either Basic Roleplaying or something like Atlas Games's WaRP if I were going to run it again.

I always considered Fading Suns taking a lot of inspiration from the Dune novels, but with a richer setting for roleplaying. First and second edition are great in my opinion, but yeah it is hard to find players for that setting.

@@malwiniuscyranoolframfromy4820 There's definitely a LOT of Dune in there. I used to tell people it was like Star Wars mixed with Dune, with a big dose of Medieval History thrown in. But it has such a rich setting, and so many different types of stories you could tell. Even though the default style was telling big stories with major movers & shakers, I liked focusing stories on the little people on the periphery of things. I ran it for quite a while back around the time 2nd Ed came out, but it was a challenge to get players then. And at the time, I had a large pool of players to draw from. These days, my pool is miniscule.

Thank you for the video! I was curious to see where Table Top RPGs are these days. Lots of choices! Can you recommend any RPG systems that are good with things like character creation, character background building, resource management, trading, delivery, discovery, detective, stealth in generic ancient/medieval times where I can create my own stories? Not as much on battle or magic but I can ignore those if the system has some of the other areas. I saw GURPS as a general system. Would that be a good place to look first or any other ideas?

Honestly, there isn't going to be a system out there which is doing to deliver everything you're looking for but I'd steer you clear of GURPS unless you're looking for the most complexity in a lot of ways. I'd say take a look at RuneQuest - especially since there's the fantastic $18.00 offer I talked about for the PDFs - or Jackals from Osprey Games. Both are Bronze Age where RuneQuest is more magical and Jackals is swords and sandals. ~ Jeff

@@Thegaminggang Jeff - Great advice. I was going to say the same thing. RuneQuest is a great pick for what was described, but like you said no game can deliver on all of those things. Glorantha is such an evocative and beautiful setting!! If you want an absolutely gorgeous setting with meticulous detail -- and it is an extremely flexible system -- there is a game called The Dark Eye, however you're probably going to struggle to find people to play it (unless you live in Germany). The German version of this game called Das Schwarze Auge and it is the #1 TTRPG in Germany. A very German game both in mechanics and setting. Probably my three favorite settings are: Glorantha, the RuneQuest setting, The Dark Eye setting which is called Aventuria, and Castle & Crusade's Aihrde setting. The Dragonbane setting and game looks interesting -- it's one of the few games I'm potentialy interested in right now that I have never tried.

@bibleboardgames5199 - Certainly the current Runequest Humble Bundle is hard to beat for value and it's a great game with a deep setting and lore to keep you reading for years. If, however, you're looking for a brilliant generic system (definitely not GURPS!) in which to build your own stories, Savage Worlds is excellent. Jeff gave the latest Adventure Edition a review on the Gaming Gang not so long ago. (*edit: only just finished watching and realised Jeff mentioned SWAdE in this episode. All editions are extremely inter-compatible, very few adjustments and all the single page update sheets are free.) The system is easy to learn and has a variety of dials to adjust it for different requirements with Companion volumes for Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction, Superheroes and more. And they've settings from D&D style fantasy (including an excellent version of Pathfinder), 1930s pulp, golden age pirates, and Victorian monster-hunting steampunk to Flash Gordon. There's even been a few kids settings, including the excellent Dustbunnies: Life Under the Couch. Savage Worlds is really versatile with a variety of task resolution rules - with even 'quick encounters' and 'dramatic tasks' that can allow you to deal with situations from fights through to wilderness journeys in different (but still satisfying) ways. You can check out their Test Drive (PDF) for free at the PEGinc site or DTRPG. The current Test Drive has an adventure for their Deadlands Weird West setting, but there's also one for the older edition available based in the Lankhmar (fantasy) setting, and a modern day horror one called The Wild Hunt. Hope you have a great time getting started with a new game.

No world of darkness mention? You usually just need 1 of the corebooks and your are good to go.

@@Thegaminggang ah ok, maybe I wasn't paying much attention then. But yes, I think wod games can be a good option, except for the fact there aren't many "adventures" I would recommend, but you do get settings based on cities and often you are fine just with the core book

The true cost… EVERYTHING. I buy books/accessories and pdfs like they’re my lifeblood. Especially when companies like Free League and Chaosium are constantly announcing new resources for Alien, One Ring, Call of Cthulhu etc. I can’t get enough. I don’t even care about playing anymore, I use them as informational resources first, game second.

This hobby is so inexpensive compared to most others...unless you buy many systems. Basic Fantasy is free as PDF's, and dice cost a few dollars.
