What's The Max Cylinders in an Engine?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Have you ever wondered how many cylinders you can actually squeeze into an internal combustion engine? V12 engines, like those in Lamborghini, or 16 cylinders in Bugatti, impressive as they are, aren't even close to what has been achieved. Even V20 engines used in aviation, or the 28-cylinder supercharged radial engines like the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 WASP with a 72-liter displacement producing 4,000 horsepower, are still far from the pinnacle. The real excitement begins with radial engines like the Zvezda M503 used to power class 5 missile boats. It consists of 7 six-cylinder engines, totaling 42 cylinders with a 143.5-liter displacement and generating 4,000 horsepower. One such engine, with slightly increased power to 8,000 horsepower, is used by the German tractor pulling team Dragon Fire. There were also two variations of this engine, one consisting of seven 8-cylinder engines with 56 cylinders and a record-breaking version with 14 eight-cylinder blocks, totaling 112 cylinders, weighing 15 tons, with a 384-liter displacement, generating 10,500 horsepower.

Personally, I think the horsepower increased so much, because the stock version is "underpowered" like some of these big engines are. HP is what matters. HP is a function of TORQUE and RPM which gives the total power output of the engine. Torque by itself does not tell you much. If we have 2 engines that make the same torque but one of them can rev 2 times as high and thus make more power, you can use a gearbox to step the RPM down and double its torque. Goes to show that torque at the engine crank means little

the problem with that I think, and Im assuming you mean dragsters, is that that much HP across 8 cylinders literally tears and overheats all the internals apart in the few seconds it takes to get down the strip. These huge 112 cylinder beasts are supposed to produce the HP and still last and be serviceable over many years. I think thats why they can crank out 8k hp out of that one engine because they are more willing to push the limits for a race, as opposed to the person who wants the boat to keep running.

Well, a 6 liter V8 putting out the same horsepower as a let's say a 20 liter radial 40 would last a fraction of what an R40 would. The theoretical R40 engine would make same horsepower at super low rpm while the V8 would have to tear itself apart for a same distance run. That's why old American big displacement V8s are super reliable, yes they make silly 160hp out of a 6 liter engine, but they do it at let's say 2k rpm, while a 1.6 liter i4 engine would have to go to 7k or something to get there. Figure out which is more reliable between the two
@aerox1930
