Yeah the questions this time round is pretty kinda on the “fun” side but not really value adding imho. But guess they hve to do it for the crowd, idk.

It's very fresh and interesting to hear from an educated and mature thinking religious representative that keeps up with modern society. They're open to criticism, explain myths, and transparent in answering society's doubts, be it negative or positive. Good job to both the podcasters and guests for explaining something that everyone is so curious about but had no avenue to find the true answer from. That being said, I hope the panels try to be more respectful and stop playing with the phone whilst on the podcast or interrupting halfway whilst the guest is explaining certain things. Good job and keep it up!

I've been going to the Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple since young and I have so many fond memories of the temple, especially during CNY! I do agree to some extent that some of the local Taoism practices are largely influenced by superstition and mythical folklore, but I hope questions about the religion is out of curiousity and not ridicule... I truly think its a shame that Master Ben was not able to share more about the philosophical aspect of Taoism cos Taoism's principles on living in harmony with the nature and natural order could have been a really meaningful topic for the panel to discuss on.

Good episodes. Enjoy hearing about the ritualistic part of Taoism. How about exploring Taoism as a philosophy instead of as a religion? There are people who follow the 道德经 as a way of living. e.g. BG George Yeo who is Roman Catholic but is a practicing Taoist

Since both Buddhism and Taoism are so similar in Sg, I suggest an episode where both Priest and Monk comes together and address situation. Like in a same situation, what would each religion do because we are always so confused 😂

Buddhism and Taoism are absolutely different. Buddhism originate from India and Taoism from China. It is the Chinese people that rojak Taoism and Buddhism together. They have very different philosophy and principles.

@@DiZangLin yes it is totally different. Buddhism is not a religion it is a way a life. Buddha teaches you the way of life, he have to walk that path yourself, no craving no suffering, don't clink on to worthy desires, Annica , everything comes and go , nothing is permanent. as you go deeper it is very interesting.It talk about the samsara cycle, cause and effect, if you can get out of it then you achieve nirvana.

it's ok, like everything else there are certain bias in different people towards knowledges outside their realm or circle. As far as you can see, there are many cuts in this video, I am guessing the producer and editor see a lot of attitude problem with him. =)

Quite interesting, i think in penang you can still see alot mentioned. When i was young i grew up in a temple so there was alot of interesting deities stories told. But when i moved to Singapore i find that most this is only known by older generation. Anyways interesting episode. Love it

Thai Buddhism is Theravada lineage same like Sri Lanka, doing alms collection practicing the original form from Gautama Buddha. Chinese Buddhism is under the Mahayana lineage. They don't do alms collection as the weather sometime do not permit. But their main goal are the same to reach Nirvana.

Have anyone noticed? Chinese culture with mythical folklore always like to use things of resemblance. Then glorify and signifies it. Turning over the 福 word 福“到”, means "blessings arrived". Mandarin orange 吉利 etc... Chinese new year, you see, it reminds you, feels good, everybody happy, very auspicious, ok lah... But some of these "resemblance" really quite over did it. I'm a Chinese and I find it quite nonsense sometimes. Then passed down the years, people forget the meaning or lost in translation, then everyone just do it blindly although it's no longer have much meaning in the modern era context.

If not mistaken, Taoism is more to Chinese version of wizard and alchemist, they create symbols, rituals, and ingredients to heal something bad. Also, Taoism is more towards understanding on Qi or energy around us.

Wah it’s really interesting content and I love learning so much about religion. I took an undergraduate class on religion and it’s so fascinating. Love this content

Thanks for coming up with the interesting episode! Just a suggestion maybe to limit the number of person talking at one time perhaps? I find it hard to concentrate and catch up with the discussion and even harder that there are no subtitles. Often one side is taking and you hear the other table cutting the speaker and laughing and all at the same time. Just my 2 cents, cheers! ;)

Religion is very personal and especially in Buddhism/ Taoist imo, its liked never a one life thing. Its just a pickup of where we normally need to brush up or work on. Actually its not the medium cleansing their bodies but the deities that came upon doing it already? Taoist rituals or praying is more for current life and things Helping devotees of their situations etc. Also, please remember to do good. Be good and kind to people. and do help and do charity if we can. Giving doesnt need to involve money too. Wu wei sounds so zen too. Just be mindful, awareness, look at the situation, look at your mood but you dont have to attach yr emotions to it. A lot of disputes arise because the sender and receiver misunderstandings, the weaving of the situation in the mind. then become unhappy with one another etc. We wei sounds liked Going with the flow For Buddhism, what i feel is that it also covers the afterlife and also knowing whom we really are and this core 'real in us' that everyone else also have, no different from Buddha - the Buddha seeds in everyone of us. Repentance is also a very important aspect in a lot of religions but not much focus on it. See how many times we will say sorry vs thank you. lol esp to loved ones. Sometimes some issues might be with karmic creditors. Life is so long. Who are we to say if we really didn't kill someone accidentally or purposely... or the guilt we trapped in us......

Growing up in SG, our grand parents used to tell us 雷公 is angry when the thunders rips the sky. Upon searching, the statue of God of thunder has a beak, carries a hammer, has wings. Can you think of a god of thunder that carries a hammer? Instead of a beak, he has wings on his head gear. Essentially, they are half - bird. Interesting the interviewers kept asking about Nu Wah. Did you realize it sounds like the name of a person in the old testament? Similar to the western / middle Eastern version, there was rain and flood. Is Nu-wah actually Noah? It has fascinated me for the longest time.

Would be interesting to hear you guys interview free masons in Singapore. Just got to know that there is a Freemason's Hall on Coleman St and there are about 600-700 free masons in Singapore.

@11:05, Bi Gan (比干）was the premier of Shang Dynasty in China during King Zhou（纣王）reign. He was eventually framed and murdered by Dazi (妲己）for speaking out against the atrocities under King Zhou. His wife, then pregnant, was forced to flee and hid in the woods where she gave birth to their son. After King Zhou was disposed by King Wu (周武王）, Bi Gan's son was bestowed the surname Lin which represents forest, thus starting the Lin/ Lim lineage.

My early answer: Taoism focuses on achieving liberation, in an almost biological sense. The human is built to be able to achieve enlightenment, but only if we choose to follow The Way. This involves the careful balance and repayment of karmas, and careful diligent cultivation through rigorous training and meditation. Buddhism believes that achieving enlightenment is but a mechanism for the liberation of all beings. If you choose to pursue self-liberation, in whatever you choose to do with your life, the aim is to help all beings to achieve liberation and freedom from rebirth. So. Taoism: biology/physics/science/spiritual mechanisms, simply existence itself, is the “How” and the “Why” is liberation. Buddhism, The “How” is achieving liberation, the “Why” is the liberation of all beings.

Could you bring on a taoist medium? Would be super interesting to hear from a taoist medium haha

Buddhism is an Indian school of thought founded in around 6 century bce. Its root word out of sanskrit word 'buddhi' which means mind or intellect. It was a counter movement to ritualistic Hinduism. At heart Buddhism is anti ritualism and is, basically that's how it started, an atheistic movement. Buddhists started off questioning Hindu rituals and divinity... but ultimately became a religion (carvaka, jainism etc are thr other systems). Basically, Buddhism is an ancient Indian intellectual movement questioning life. Its probably founded by gautam siddharth based on learnings found on that subcontinent in those days, I would probably credit prebuddhist ideas of kapil as well, I have no doubt Buddha was influenced by kapil.

What fish are they talking about? Im very interested to read more about this fish.

Question.. My grandmother house had a glass thing that has water with like a tall sealed glass on it. She said whenever a god (not sure which) came by the house, it will make a pop sound. The fact that i have heard and seen water droplets being splashed inside the glass. Can anyone here explain or even tell me what that glass is called? Anyone knows what I am even talking about?

Honestly nothing much similar with Buddhism. Buddhism is to cultivate our morality & purifying our internal spirituality/mind, you reap what you sow,it doesn't involve any rituals at all.Most Chinese Buddhist practitioners have add the Chinese culture to pray with offerings to a Buddha statue.Which specifically Buddha have in his teachings told his disciples not to honour or appreciate him with any kind of offerings or prayers.The best way to appreciate or show gratitude on his teachings is to practise and apply the teachings in our daily lifes eg kindness to oneself & others.Certainly not wrong if we pray to Buddha & give offerings out of respect is fine.Buddha teachings simply it must be sensible(not superstitious),logical, realistic,applicable, scientific where it can be proven to be beneficial.Yes,most of us are Buddhists in name.To know Buddhism you need to study a bit about the teachings/Dhamma.A proper Buddhist centre/temple the priority is on the teachings/knowledge with the true knowledge about yourself and the causes & effects of life and nature then you can by yourself truly resolve any problems in life and death.If a Buddhist temple do not have teachings then it is not a proper true Buddhist temple if it is merely on prayers or rituals.A true Buddhist will at least know & start with learning 1) The Four Noble truths.2) The Noble 8 Foldpaths.Anyway, the most important question we need to ask ourselves is what you want ultimately, what is your final goal or final purpose for you to learn a religion. Taoism started with Lao Zi principally is 'an art of effortless living'.Like one of you says just do it because my parents or a master tell you to do it.You just accept & believe.A bit different with The Buddha that told his disciples do not believe anything I said until you have analysed and investigated it yourself and that it make sense to you.Thanks for your interesting posting.Wishing all able to find true purpose & happiness in your life journey.

Folk is more 武 , Taoism in priest context more towards 文. 文武 together helps to sustain and prevent the religion from fading . Metaphysic , TCM is indirectly related to Taoism as well .

A chinese taoist priest told me that Dizang wang(ksitigarbha) guan yin and guan gong are the only deities or protectors that appear in both taoism and buddhism regardless of their origin.
