    Great video as always. For us the greatest selling point for MZ was the layers tool. We use a lot of asymmetrical assets in our game, so being able to shift between four layers allowed us to create much more organic looking maps, without plugins.

    As someone who enjoys "coding" using events, RPG Maker 2003 has been my go-to forever. WIth MZ however, it's finally more 1:1 with RPG Maker 2003 when it comes to event commands. There are still some extra features in 2003 particularly when it comes to picture placement, but MZ is good enough that I very much enjoy using it.

    There is one upside with MV. It's now one of the newer RPG Maker variants that shows up *super* cheap when on sale. I got VX Ace from humble ages ago, and found information on it to be scarce. MV at least has a few plugins and some tutorials, and isn't $80 (it cost me $15). Also, Javascript is nice in both cases.

    When MZ was announced I was really on the fence, as they revealed more such as the move routes, the layer system [which I still don't 100% understand so if someone wants to give it to me simple, or as we say KISS[Keep it simple stupid] i'd appreciate that...same with pictures, I don't understand the X and Y stuff fully] the MZ system seemed to push my forward, and I did enjoy it and use it now, to me it's better than MV but that's probably cause I had MV when it came out, and only made 2 'complete' games...which had either issues or unfixable bugs that drove me into a spiral of just stopping...plus a lot of bridges were cut after the 2nd one...god I never wanna do that again. So hopefully with MZ I can truly make much better games.

    I am really confused by RPG makers decision to keep making things ...arguably worse after XP. XPs map editor was a bit more clunky sure, but you had more options with how tiles worked and the sprites were so much better. IDK why they're going with these extra chibi sprites but I wish they'd do something a bit less ...crunched?

  • @darkbeetlebot

    I completely agree. One of the biggest reasons I haven't moved away from VX Ace was because of the chibification of all the default art assets. I get you're not meant to use them in an actual game release, but some people don't have the option of getting well-made original art. XP's was also a pretty iconic style. It had that distinct 90s anime look like 2000, but it was polished and slightly cartoonish (but not as chibi as MV). For me, VX/Ace hit the sweet spot in terms of character design, even though I found the monster designs to be a bit too dark and edgy and preferred the XP ones. The MV monsters IMO look decent at best and godawful at worst.

    It's great to have an updated comparison, and I think you covered everything major. A couple things I'd add that weigh in MV's favor: 1) Spritesheet animations are possible in MZ, but only with some work/plugins. This is imo a major negative for people with retro styled games for which particle effects are not a good fit. 2) Plugin availability may differ until more plugin devs catch up (though for YEP users it is mostly covered by Visustella). 3) Reid is lamer than Harold.

  • @Cazwolf

    @Cazwolf

    2 жыл бұрын

    Okay I was with you up until the Reid comment. No one is lamer than Harold. ヽ(`⌒´ )ノ For real though, I actually haven't tried importing sheeted animations into MZ myself yet, so I didn't realise it was actually that tricky! I'd heard that people had done it and never heard it was difficult or anything, so it's something I'm gonna have to brush up on, and maybe I can make a tutorial to make that a little easier for people. :D That's actually such a big negative though if it can't be simplified. And yeah the plugin situation for MV vs. MZ is hopefully something that will start to look up for non-VS users. I'm really hoping that some people in the community can pick up the torch and start producing more plugins for the community, or maybe some developers could even be hired by Komodo/Kadokawa to produce new plugins. I know there are a number of non-VS plugins out there already, but it's a shame that there isn't anywhere near as much interest as MV had. (Also Reid is definitely better than Harold, fite me)

    I stood before this decission (MV or MZ) a few days ago. But I ultimately chose MV because it - other than MZ seems to be fully Linux / Steam Engine compatible. While the other seems to work kinda, but not out of the box. And as you can get most of the things MZ offers with plugins and a bit of code-wizardry... I believe I made the right decission.

    I'm so used to using RPG Maker 2000 that every time I try a different RPG Maker I get really frustrated at how I can't do certain things that I could do with the 2K version. MZ lacks the decent ominous/horror type music that 2K had, and I can't seem to put a mailbox in anyone's front yard... 2K of course didn't have animated battler graphics like MZ has, but at least you could reasonably have animals as part of your party. If you have an animal in your party in MZ with the battle in side view, your animal has no battler graphic. Also, MZ just needs more animals in general.

    MV has had different battle systems via plugins for a VERY long time, Yanfly made if I recall 3? Then You have MogHunter's just to name a few and they don't cause any real compatibility or hit preformance. Still unsure if I want to upgrade to MZ yet, the assets and the move route stuff would be really nice and since it's the same scale there's no need to do anything weird to make them work unlike using older XP or VX Ace assets. The map layering in XP for whatever reason always confused me tho but it did have nice things it. TileD doesn't do anything helpful in comparison even though it tries.

  • @Cazwolf

    Unfortunately you can't both open the same project at the same time and work out of it like that. There are ways that you -can- work on the project together but you have to be very careful not to overwrite each other's work. There are certain parts of the game that will have their own dedicated files though. So for example your brother could make maps while you're working on the database or something, and then you can copy and paste his map files into the project afterwards.

MZ requires a strong computer to use, so if you are a low-end or mid-end user I'm sorry but you will not have the best experience (or be able to experience it at all). And the games made by MZ also will require its playerbase to have the same requeriments too. And that's mainly why MV is still out there! If you don't have a strong device to play MZ, *or,* wants your ge to hit all audiences, not just high-end users, I would recommend you go for MV instead.

    Ohh. MZ have features what I really want. But I already worked on my game more then one year, and if I switch to the MZ, it all gonna start over ((( So i will finish my game first. Couse I spend much love in it, and slove to many problems with her, to just ignore it! But, it is great what when I gonna make sequels or another stories what take place in the same world, I could make them in MZ :> Honestly, MZ looks like very good DLC to mv. (Couse the difference is way smaller then foe exapmle difference between ace and mv.) And if it was a DLC, it would be awsome, and cost all it money : (Sory for my bad English)

  • @Cazwolf

    That's the best plan, honestly! It's smart to finish your original project in the current engine, then try out MZ for any sequels or future games. :D

  • @Cazwolf

    @Cazwolf

    14 күн бұрын

    RPG Maker works out of the box without any knowledge of coding languages. Everything is just snippets of code automatically done for you, and you use the eventing system to input your own data. You can make more advanced modifications to your projects by using Javascript, but it's not always necessary if RPG Maker can do what you need on its own. There are also other people out there who have released Javascript plugins that you can add to your games without knowing how the code works.

    There's the RPG Maker official forum where you can post a thread about your game if it's free. There are also RM websites like rpgmaker.net and HBGames where you can upload your game and host a page for it. The best place at the moment for indies aiming to sell their games though is probably itch.io, because it handles the uploads, plus all of the sales and payment processing.

  • @Cazwolf

    @Cazwolf

    Actually the majority of Yanfly's plugins were ported over to MZ. You can get pretty much everything you need for free in the VisuStella Core plugins, and they also sell a lot of "luxury" plugins for more specific needs. :D

    They have a lot of pros and cons, but yeah they don't fit pixel art games particularly well. They're great for non-artists though because they're way easier to make. Thankfully there was an update to MZ that lets you make MV-style animations now, so you can actually import sheets like you used to be able to. :D

    For mv you don't have to learn a new language to make an effekseer animation to use in combat, and mz, to my knowledge and experimentation, has worse overall animation control if you want to make something seem simple. This is my opinion and not facts in any way

    So MZ just has more art assets is that really all they did with this? That sound pretty lame especially sense you can only generate characters in Japanese style only! You can't create it in your own or other styles! Which ultimately you would need to import them from else where making MZ totally useless if you ask me! Why can't they just make one engine? and just upgraded or updated that's all I really have to do! I mean unity and godot is still one engine right? And these people been around a lot longer too you think that by now they would have the best engine in town? But no is the same old sht! Over and over and over again! With minor adjustments like a regular update!

  • @Cazwolf

    @Cazwolf

    Жыл бұрын

    If you actually watch the video, you'd learn that it's more than just art assets that makes MZ different. They can't make just one engine and continuously update it because that's not financially sustainable. If you can't afford to buy the newer engines, there's nothing wrong with the older, fully capable engines they've released.
