Just to add to the great video. Subaru has a coolant product to lower the freezing point of the Super Coolant premix for really cold climates. It's called Genuine Subaru SOA868V9260 Super Coolant Concentrate, 1 Quart Bottle. It can be difficult to find as most owners don't subject their cars to temperatures cold enough to need this product... but I do. You can blend this in to reach your desired freeze point.

If the difference between the green coolant and the blue coolant is that Subaru pre-mixed the blue with good water, could we get 100k miles out of the green coolant if we mixed it with distilled water? Also, I have 2001 Impreza and a 2002 Forester both with EJ25s non-turbo engines. If I flush out the green coolant and put in the Subaru blue coolant would they also be good for the 100k change intervals (even though they're older cars)?

What's the difference between the white bottle and black bottle Super Coolant. I read the new black one has an additional corrosion inhibitor: 2-ethylhexanoic acid, sodium salt. Which one is better?

I had a big overheat with my 06XT when the top tank split. It was a bright sunny day so I did not see the temperature gauge pegged to MAX until it had covered everything in the engine bay with green coolant. Got it trucked to my local workshop to replaced the radiator. They advised me to keep an eye on the level in the overflow bottle, and it soon become apparent there was an issue. As a first step I added a bottle of the Coolant Conditioner (Holts Radweld). Touch wood, it has never had a coolant problem since. But that plastic top tank makes me nervous.

Hi Flatirons, I have a question (not related to the subject) - is it ok to replace just one tyre on an older WRX/STI, if you get a puncture, or do you need to replace in pairs, or do you need to replace all 4 in one go? I've heard lots of conflicting info on this - some people say you have to replace all 4 at once or you risk damaging the center viscous diff, & potentially the front/rear diffs aswell.

Thanks for your question. On an All-Wheel Drive Subaru (and most All Wheel Drive cars for that matter) all of the tires need to be the same circumference. If they aren't, the speed of the front and rear axles will turn at slightly different speeds, and yes, this can damage either the differential on that axle, or the center differential. So if you have a flat, you either need to have a tire shaved to be the same circumference as the other 3 tires, or get 4 new tires. We might add this to our QotW, but I wanted to give you a clear answer for that here. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

I used coolant without conditioner. I started having overheating issues/ head gasket leak. Flushed the coolant system, and used the conditioner and everything was fine again-this on OEM MLS head gasket

I agree that it doesn't make sense to put the coolant conditioner in the turbo vehicles, but the factory service manual for the 2017 STI says to add the conditioner and then add the coolant. I get the impression that they simply copy/pasted their coolant fill instructions from other vehicles.

I have a 2015 Subaru WRX with 101k miles in it currently. At around 24k miles ago on May 2021 I changed the super coolant using the super coolant as it had in factory. I did a drain and fill. Did not use any distilled water or any water period. I didn't replace the thermostat then or do anything with water pump. This time around when I hit next 80k miles I'll be replacing thermostat. I may do it sooner as the thermostat is original but will do a drain and fill again. I'm not at my car and can't confirm atm but I recall that also for the 2015 WRX you use the conditioner bottle in the coolant as well along with super coolant. Not looking forward to replacing the thermostat based on what I read it's in a tight spot requiring dropping some pipes to get access. I may be wrong.

Thanks for the question. It wouldn't hurt the headgasket. But the conditioner/stop leak has a tendency to clog up parts of the cooling system. That is why it is not recommended. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

Not coolant related, but I have a question about mixing oil. I run 5W40 (Motul excess or xclean) in my turbo Crosstrek. I have an external oil cooler so I fill up with 5L of Motul and an 1L bottle. Can I mix 5W40 oils? Sometimes I use Eneos 5W40 and have topped up. What do you guys think. Very curious to know!

Thanks for the question. To the best of my recollection, one of the requirements of the API is that most any given oil has to be mixable with another similar oil. So I think that it will blend in okay. When I have had to do this in the past (on a road trip, at the track, etc.) i usually try to change the oil shortly there after. I'm not sure what the long term issues might be, but that always seemed to be the best option to me. I hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

That... Is a tricky one for sure, and not a simple answer. The local cars we have seen try it end up running a fair amount hotter, especially on track, because the waterless coolant is slower to release heat than water. There are definitely some benefits and drawbacks. It is also unclear at some tracks whether or not it is allowed because I believe it does still make the surface slick. Thanks for your question. As long as the other brands of coolant are glycol based coolants that would also be compatible with a Subaru, then you should not have any issues mixing the coolants together. ​@@FlatironsTuningvery good topic. I am Reno Nv and I went to Subaru dealership in Reno and they told me that they were out of Blue coolant. I have a 2022 OBW . They said that I could use any blue coolant I told them okay. They have a bad reputation for being stupid. I went to the Carson City Subaru dealership and told them that Reno said that I could use any blue coolant. They told me that if I did use another blue coolant it would mix with the other coolant and then turn into sludge. What do you think.

Used to live in South Reno. Reno subaru is the worst of the worst. Incompetent parts dept, and their service techs are a joke! You made the right choice asking Carson City subaru as they are much better in regards to their service, and parts departments They usually have the parts you need at carson subaru, but they do have high part prices. I would believe Carson Subaru over Reno any day.

Thanks for your question. Yes, as discussed in the video you can mix the two coolants. But if you want to get the full benefits of the Blue coolant (longer service interval), you would need to completely flush all of the green coolant out before putting the blue in.
