Independent testing has born out the remarkable balance of Magnacut traits. I remember when S30V was released, and how it took market share from 154CM/ATS-34, and D2 as the go-to premium blade steels. It isnt a stretch to predict that Magnacut is poised to wrestle share from many favored knife steels, in at least as large a manner as did S30V ... limited right now mostly by Crucible's ability to produce it in volume (and not limited e.g. by its machinability or difficulty in heat treating). Bravo.

As a knife collector since the 70's as a child into becoming a knife maker in the early 2000's its amazing to see how far the art has come. I used to make knives With Devin Thomas steels (him and Chad Nichols). Its amazing to see Larrin become so passionate and to take this whole thing into the future. In the 70's 80's and 90's we really didn't have info like this at our finger tips. It was word of mouth and books (which were rare). This is gold for knife makers today and in the future.

I have heard MagnaCut described as "it is tougher than M4 and better edge retention than 3V". How great would it be if those two comparisons where switched? If it was tougher than 3V and better edge retention than M4, that would make it the best steel ever made.

You hear a lot about some steels being hard to sharpen. My convex edge Cru Wear and Magnacut knives respond nicely to stropping. Since I don't chop down trees with them I doubt I will ever need much more. Marvelous interview BTW!

The REALLY nice thing about Magnacut is that, unlike when S30V was 1st produced, which actually took heat treaters awhile to figure it out, & was a bit finicky about heat treat. Magnacut seems to have avoided those growing pains. It also seems less chippy than S30V - S125v steels as well. Magnacut's a nice complement (& bump in stainlessness) to CPM-Cruwear, which is loved by so many. Should be a real winner. I would LOVE this in my Leatherman. AND...A big THX & shoutout to Crucible. Thanks guys. 🙏

Great information. Nice breaking out the Chris Reeve representing Idaho! Another impressive steel, based on your toughness chart, is good 'ole 420HC. I know it's not cool to say that because it's not the new "super" flavor of the year. But another one of our Idaho knife companies, Buck, knows how to heat treat it. And it shows because the destruction tests on the Nighthawk and 119 are very impressive. In addition, Buck's 420HC is easy to sharpen, tough and makes for a great water knife. I am interested in Magnacut though and have been looking at Ontario's new SPL Pack Knife in Magnacut. But I will never get rid of my Buck 650 and 655 Nightwawk's.

@@housevollmer9106 you are 100% correct. Someone new to making knives needs a simple steel to work with. You’re first knife is going to be complete junk. Your second knife will also be somewhat awful. It takes time and practice. Get some 1084 and get the heat treat down on it. Once you understand grinding and are proficient at it, then Maybe try a super steel and send it off to be heat treated so it’s done perfectly.
