    I like that she doesn't have any wounds and is bare-footed w/o major armor; it gives her that "spirit" vibe, like no she isn't someone who's now a zombie and stuff, but rather something that just appears when you summon it- something that doesn't care if it gets stabbed again if it can kill the betrayer.

    Kalista still has one of the saddest voice lines imo Periodically she will simply say: "Kalista, that was our name". The delivery is spot-on and with this latest short story it's fully fleshed out and is just as sad as I had expected (in that she no longer remembers who she is and her sense of self is being eroded by/mixed with the multitudes of oathsworn souls bound to her). I used to play her a ton but the nerfs along with a general meta shift have made me prefer not to. On the plus side, Essence Reaver is back so I'm back to a build I like on Sivir/Ashe.

    Well all that talk about accuracy makes me recall that time you said in fantasy, it ain’t about realism, but believability, as a spectre she wouldn’t need armour at all, so the just enough armour to make it believable that she was a warrior seems good enough.

    I think Kalista really shines the most when including Ledros. As of the current lore, Kalista as an individual character shifted from a person to an autonomous idea similar to Kindred. It works great as a tool for myths and to build up the world but leaves her without much current personality. The continuation of conflict in her story no longer comes directly from her but from Ledros' attempts to bring her back, only to fail time and time again. I think Ledros' inner suffering is truly highlighted by the fact that Thresh, someone who takes great enjoyment of torturing someone himself, is satisfied by simply standing by and watching. With the ending of the short story and Ledros' returning to the mist I can only really hope we get more of his character.

    Kalista having her feet exposed + having blue skin sells more the idea of her being some kind of zombie/undead, although I always saw her more like a ghost? like that's not her real body, that's just a mix of souls who happen to look like that because that's the form the assumed for the spirit of revenge, which is why I like her not being wounded at all? Like they could break down her body, but not her spirit

    I think her armor is fine (minus the boob plate). I think they were aiming for the Roman style for it. Taking away her boots actually helps with more readability. If you had to track a jumping spear lady, the legs have to stand out from a semi top down perspective Edit: the helm is a bit more akin to eastern militaries but the rest fall in place with Romans to me

    Plus Kalista is undead anyway. It's possible she used to have some more covering her limbs. Skyen also kind of grazed it, but I'm certain part of the design is Kalista clinging to parts of her old identity. Her armor isn't simply _archaic,_ it's a shadow of a memory of it's former glory.

    @@Banana-senpai An interesting question. I usually consider such armors to be more ornamental/formal/ritualistic than functional per se. That is, it's function is not primarily defensive, it's look is it's primary purpose. Such armors will still function in combat and it's not unrealistic to have fighters put on a bit of a show for crowds. Even in _League_ Draven is completely about this idea. Things like 'boobplate' are only a bad idea if pure function is your only goal.

    I know I am quite late to the game, but you talked about the armor, and with my interests, I feel a need to leave a few thoughts. I would on principle agree that Kalista could/should start looking a lot less like directly a woman, and more fluid in her expression. However, if the armor is the armor she wore in life, it makes more sense for the armor to keep the shape of her breasts. Then it may be a discussion of whether her being more of a spirit would/should allow her to change how her armor looks. Regarding armor itself. Nowadays, there are a lot of ideas of how plate armor should look om people. Especially how it should look on women. Therefore, there is a lot of discussion about "boob armor", and whether it is appropriate or would look like that, if women were to wear armor. Now, we do have depictions of Joan of Arc that shows that she was basically just wearing the same design as a man wearing armor, meaning the chest plate looks similar to a sort of pot belly that goes into a slim waist. HOWEVER! We have also good reason to believe that these traits would've been seen as attractive on a man of that time, and that is why the armor looked like it. So Joan of Arc might just be wearing mans armor, or the armor made for her was just made like the standard back then. Throughout much of history, plate armor mimics the traits that would be seen as attractive by the wearer. It was more or less only men wearing armor, so it mimiced attractive male traits. There are examples of ancient roman chest plates that have pecs and abs, and there are medieval armors that have the most insane codpieces. Because armor often also conveys sex appeal. I am saying this because, T B Skyen is 100% correct when saying that showing some sort of chest/breasts form on armor is probably the easiest way to convey that the armored person is indeed a woman. BUT, there is a good historical precedent for the possibility that womens armor would've been made with boobs, and in some situations, perhaps even nipples. Those would probably be few and far between, as they would probably be the more expensive kind. The design I find more likely to be the common design for womens armor, would be that the chest area still has more room, but it wouldn't show as 2 individual breasts. The design of Bo-Katan Kryze's armor in The Mandalorian kinda shows what I mean regarding extra chest room without it being individual breasts, in case someone needs a visual reference.

    Around 17:30 ish you started talking about how you think it would be more interesting if she was more genderless. And while I agree with you, I also think having a explicitly feminin revenge spirit is interesting. Revenge is frequently a very masculine motivation. Fully agree with you on the "boob-plate is rather stupid" front, but I do think this is a interesting archetype to have made feminine.

    You ask the rhetorical question about who goes to war with their thigh exposed, and there is a historical precedent for this. The armour that the Roman Soldiers only reached to just above their knees, and it was never plate armour like we see in medieval Europe, but more like a short metal skirt in some cases. Granted this was partially because their shield (the Scutum) was large enough to protect their legs already, and so there was no need to armour them up. There are other reasons that I am not knowledgable enough to explain, but judging by Kalista's armour, the "skirt" she has could very well be a ruined piece of armour, of roughly the same design as the roman soldier's. So depending on the military tactics and fighting style of that ancient kingdom, it's not impossible that theirs was similar to ancient Rome.

    Here’s my question: how the hell did people figure out the invocation to summon Kalista? How did the people of Runeterra know that you can hammer nails in an effigy to make her show up? Did she just roll up to someone during a Harrowing and say “Yo fam, if you’re ever betrayed, do this ritual and I’ve got your back?” I feel like that’s an aspect of her lore that Riot should really elaborate on: who was her first pledge, and how did that knowledge spread?

  • @thepalelibrarian

    @thepalelibrarian

    5 жыл бұрын

    That's how it is with every single superstition in real life. It gets passed down for generations to the point no one knows how it started with certainty. Maybe it's not a matter of hammering an effigy, but the process helps the person channel whatever energy or emotion is necessary to get her attention or something. Dunno, I don't think it's an issue, it's a throwaway thing to make it spooky.

  • @goldlight1322

    @goldlight1322

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@thepalelibrarian See, while I can understand where you're coming from, the issue with Kalista is that she's NOT just a superstition within the context of League's lore. People may tell stories about her and all the Shadow Isle's denizens, but they are real entities that exist in Runeterra, which means at some point, someone had to have figured out "there is a specific ghost in the Shadow Isles I can sell my soul to for vengeance." I do like your explanation, though. If it's just generally WANTING vengeance really bad, and the ritual is nothing more than a byproduct of myth, that does make a lot of sense, especially since there are various ways of summoning her (as seen in her reveal trailer.) I suppose I'll accept this as headcanon for now.

  • @Whysoshort

    @Whysoshort

    It's likely there are multiple rituals to summon Kalista and that the only truly important factor is a strong sense of vengeance and a willingness to do anything for it. If that is not the case, then someone discovered it on accident. Symbolically taking out their anger and frustration only to discover that it is effective. From there it spread

  • @imranmeco3393

    @@goldlight1322 Yeah, but how often do you suppose people would sell their soul for vengence, or how many people even had something so wrong done to them to warrant such a thing. It happens so rarely that it might as well be just a superstition. As for the ritual, just take a look at Bloody Mary. Something simple that can be easily done. Even if it fails, it doesn't invalidate it, it just confirms that not everyone can do it.

    Actuallly ancient roman legionaries didn't wear any real leg armor what so ever, granted it was because their shields protected that area most of the time. Something similar could be possible for Kalista the warrior (opposed to Kalista the undead spirit) but overtime as people forgot about Kalista's people they forgot about their battle tactics as well. In fact Kalista's outfit doesn't look that different from what roman legions wore (and yes they essentially had bare leg and arms , apart from the shoulders and parts of the upper arms).

If i would change anything of her it would be make her legs like a shadowy flowing thing, so she could still be fairly quickly while moving, i just think its too silly this spirit of vengeance that bounces around.

    7:55: So, Kalista is now the only champion who still interacts with "summoners" in the lore? 11:05: You'll be familiar with that standard female body shape if you play _any_ fantasy video game. Or non-fantasy video game. Or consumed basically any media where the artists get to choose the character's body shape. 20:25: A few red accents where the spears poke her, at least.

    One thing they did with Kalista: emphasized lips (whether with lipstick or otherwise) Makeup is generally coded female, ditto long hair, ditto wide hips. Posture can also be coded heavily gendered, if you want. In minor differences, we generally code certain jaw- and eyebrow shapes feminine also, as well as certain aspects of fat and muscle distribution, depending how detailed you want to get. And then there's colours, which are INTENSELY gender coded and can be used to identify a character.

    I do not agree with taking her Identety. She is a folklore, she is refered too as "Lady Vengence". Her ghost body is the avatar of their combined hate and lust for vengence.

    Her identity as Lady Vengeance is not who Kalista was in life. Skyen is talking about how Lady Vengeance's identity as Kalista was eroded over time, yet still lingers in the femininity of her character design.

    I too will nver stop disliking Kai'sa and her lore/design until they fix/update her and give her a VU. She desperately needs it because as she stands she darn near completely fails to meet the expectations of ANY part of her tropes... Void Hunter/Survivor puh-lease she couldn't survive a day in the void, and she basically "hunts" the void equivalent of rats and cats. She doesn't have the mental fortitude or fire power to take out an actual void monster on the scale that the Ascended had to fight....so where does that leave her if she can't do what other especially strong or smart or group Runeterrians can do?
