Yes, because from day one, not enough money was spent on a good system...they are all usually bare bones minimum grade.

I have two thermostats but the kids are upstairs in the day time while my wife and I work downstairs. So we need both floors to be cooled throughout the day. Downstairs is good but upstairs most the time in the summer is brutal

That's similar to my house and we're considering a new system. Is your ac single-stage, 2-stage, or variable speed? Do all of your rooms receive enough air?

Thank you so much for this video!! I have a two-story home approximately 1500 square feet of living space. Have a window unit upstairs and only 1 AC thermostat (downstairs)... After 11 a.m. the heat rises downstairs to about 78 to 80 degrees if I dont put the thermostat on 73 to 74... The problem is the unit never seems to go off. Would it be better to adjust the thermostat to around 76 and turn on the window unit upstairs (which gets really cold)? I have a feeling all the downstairs AC air is rising to the top of the home where there's no AC on? Should I turn on the upstairs AC during the day to regulate the air flow as to prevent me from having to set the thermostat downstairs to lower settings which is running up my electricity bill? Thank you in advance for whatever suggestion you're able to offer. Also, you spoke of insulation upstairs in the attic... Is it true that I can use foil paper to save money to insulate, rather than purchasing the foil type insulated product from home improvement store?

2 story, 3 zones, 2 zones down, 1 zone up. I constantly tell everybody to keep the doors closed, both outside doors and room doors, especially upstairs bedrooms since the 2 story great room center of the house allows all of the cold air to descend. And, of course, opening an 8' tall front door or doorwall and standing in the breeze is just all of the already cooled air escaping my home. No matter how many times I say it, I get 'that look' lol.

Whole house fans are great. They can be a game changer in a house without AC. We had one in a house that caught fire. When the house filled with smoke and we had a bird in a cage to get out, I turned the fan on. Almost instantly there was no smoke in the house and we were able do get what was needed done before the fire reached the area we were in. It was amazing to see how long the fan ran with fire being drawn through it and into the attic, which did do quite a bit of roof damage because of the fan blowing flames on the underside of the roof.

Who do you recommend for Tucson az area. Buying a house that only has 1 thermostat. Also what are your thoughts on cooling your garage? What is the “price difference “ for a garage? Like an extra $100/mo?

I guess in Cali you have all the bedrooms on the top floor, here in Texas the master is usually on the bottom and the rest of the bedrooms are up on the top floor.

At the end you were talking about the advantages of smaller systems. I've lived in places that had oversized systems. They were noisy, and you had to use a lower set point just to keep the humidity at a comfortable level because it ran for shorter times. Very inefficient higher heat load and higher bills no matter what seer rating you're playing with.

@@jtnaehring9670 My upstairs does not have it's own return point so if I leave the door open the scrawny little register above the room entry door tries to cool the entire vaulted ceiling volume and the upstairs stays hot . If I close the door the heat from the room is expelled through the gaps in the door and it cools the upstairs nicely.

@@InsideOfMyOwnMind that’s cool that the door expels the heat. your lucky you have vaulted ceilings it gives the heat a spot to go I have traditional 7 foot cielings and a portable ac.

I have a house where the bottom ac works but not the top where my bed room and the living room as well as the kitchen is I'm not sure what to do with it

If it's a window unit then thats not good for me. I've done that, it started leaking inside my home and the wood starts to decay. And my concern is that with the wood decaying it may cause my house to collapse.

80 degrees is lovely. My bedroom is on the second floor of my house. I can decide when to air condition it and I don't usually air condition it if the temperature is under 85 outside. Yes, seriously. I put a fan in the window.

I live in a 2 story home with only one unit and one thermostat upstairs. I. Otived that there is no return air vent downstairs. Would it be a good idea to add a return air vent?

I've shut off vents and closed doors before and it kicked the breaker. Lesson learned. 🤓👍

Worse thing you can do for an HVAC system. Best the vents are all open fully, doors open so the air can return and keep the system running cool.

I was wondering the same thing. In the summer I damper majority of downstairs vents and vice versa in the winter. Seems to work great! I also highly recommend the Ecobee system with the satellite thermostats, best $350 I ever spent

I live in upstate NY and my house is 2100 sqf, the AC company divided it into two zones as the bedrooms are separated by a long passage from the living room and kitchen, they installed 2 ton unit in each zone (2 units totally). The problem is once ambiance reaches 85+, they keep running non stop and once it hits 90 on some few days of the year, they keep running and running and rooms temp keeps going up 1 degree every hour. So, it starts from 70 till hits 75. If I set anything on the thermostat over 70, it starts to feels sticky and warm. The AC company inspected it several times and every time they tell me everything runs as it should without solving the problem. my bill here NY really hurts.

That sounds about right. Only thing you could do is improve insulation or switch to slightly oversized 2-stage or variable speed units but that is a lot more money.

I hate having this same problem and it seems like a really stupid problem to have in the 21st century. When I was getting my system replaced recently I blew up at the company because I can't understand why I go into a multi story commercial building the upper levels are cool. Why can't they seem to achieve this in homes? I told them to just sell me what they sell businesses I don't care how many units or thermostats I need, I just want to be comfortable.

For one, your systems better be a 5 ton. Also, the ago of your home helps tell how it was built regarding windows, attic and wall insulation etc. Sounds like the home is older and built long before the codes required lots of R30 attic and R11 walls. Dual pane windows also help as much as insulation does so if the house doesn't have those, that is another energy source issue.

Set your upstairs to 80 to 82 during the day when you not using that area. Cool downstairs at 76 to 78. Whatever your comfortable with. Then switch around 7pm. Start cooling upstairs (bedroom areas) while you won't need to cool downstairs anymore that day. This is how I do it at my house!

Yes, leave downstairs thermostat set on 76 or 78 all the time and adjuster upstairs down or cooler toward the end of the day and through the night. Then, in the morning, upstairs can go back up to 82 or your favorite temp. A lot of that upstairs cold air is heading downstairs all by itself due to cool air sinks, hot air rises or convection. You would reverse all of this in winter, adjust downstairs while setting upstairs to a temp you are okay with all the time.

Do I need to close the staircase going up if I want to cool only the first floor? Because I know that in Law of Thermodynamics that cold air is denser so it will not go up. So I assume that it is ok to not close the stairs.

Try the T10 Honeywell stat. And then yes you'll be able to remotely sense upstairs. It's one solution. Give it a try.

It's a huge battle, heat rises and cold air sinks. Makes you wonder why local codes allow 2 story residences at all especially since most of California is "all about being green and efficient". Well, the real reason they allow 2 stories is because property taxes and utilities can double with 2 homes on the size of a single level lot. It's greed with city/county codes more than anything else. If not, they would not allow 2 stories and suggest a builder design homes with basements instead. AND, with two story homes being approved, you would think the local codes simply require those structures be built with two HVAC systems, one for each level, which would allow for smaller BTU's by splitting total BTU's needed into about half. But they don't so most tract homes are uncomfortable and inefficient thanks to the local codes. Also, codes should require attic power vents and whole house fans be part of any new or remodeled home. But they don't. My understanding with dampers is, they need to be mounted right close to the supply plenum for the least amount of static pressure concerns and best function. I also understand not all supply "registers" are efficient. Way back in the 1990's our HVAC company suggested "rolled" metal registers as they do not restrict air as much as stamped steel louvers and they are much quieter. We used them and its a huge difference. Most cost of course but just where do you decide what a system installation should have and at what price point to allow for the needed performance needed with California's extremely high electric rates which are aight about .38 to .46 cents per kWh in southern California. Nevada rates are .08 per kWh !! So, with all the concerns there are about energy, SEER ratings, AFUE ratings etc. the local codes are not keeping up and should be ! Builders are going cheap and bare minimum which do nothing for the buyer who is under the impression "new house, all efficient" when it couldn't be farther from the truth.

im trying so hard to find a video like this with instructions for ppl who don't have whole house cooling/ ac 😭 like.. i live in a very old new york house and it just wasn't build to support a whole ac system. AND i live in an upstairs apartment. IM DYING..

My house had been without AC for 4 days (furnace motor broke and we needed a new furnace), I just got the new furnace today and the AC is now running (thank goodness) But my house was at 90 degrees, the installers said it could take a while until the house cools down and I was wondering if there’s something I could do to speed up the cooling process? Maybe open windows upstairs to let the hot air escape out of? (Hot air rises and all that) but if not that’s cool too, just wondering because it would make going to bed a whole lot better

It took our house a few days with our new ac and they had to come out to lower the air handler speed to lower the humidity.

We live in a 2 story home in Texas, 3 bedrooms upstairs are always hot. The thermostat is in a hallway in the second floor but that hallways receives a/c from both downstairs and upstairs unit. So the 2nd floor thermostat goes off when ir reaches the set temperature. Additionally the units are under warranty, they say I need to keep the upstairs unit 2 degrees higher than the downstairs one and that this unit is bigger than the other one. I can’t leave the downstairs at 82 and set the upstairs at 75. Not sure what to do but by poor 11 month old is sleeping in a warm bedroom. Please help!

I have similar issue and been looking for an answer in the internet for a year! Lol I just shit each floor off. If I go upstairs I shut downstairs momentarily and cool from upstairs. It seems faster this way. It's really annoying this issue

I’ve been watching a lot of HVAC videos and all these guys/ companies sound like sales men .Aaaaargh . Don’t calculate based on square footage, don’t calculate based on cubic footage . Don’t buy an oversized system don’t buy an undersized system . Take into account where you live, what the humidity is in your area . Condenser units need to be in area with plenty of airflow . Remember to take into effect the neutrino bombardment from solar emissions. Gravitation distortion from higher density material under your foundation . Offset the amount of humans and machines that emit heat into the building based their proper atomic mass of elements to make sure their radiation doesn’t effect the way the thermostat interprets the temp . The system should run for a calculated amount time to reduce humidity. And always , always remember the Einstein-Rosen bridge effect in the duct work as this can lead to possible efficiency loss into other point in space . Meanwhile at Home Depot : I have a house that need a window unit , this large unit looks good , same day install ... works for 10 years no problem .

Why the heating come out the cold air.?

Mine: two story house, one downstairs thermostat. House used to get too hot upstairs or AC ran all the time. Easy Solution: I now keep my upstairs attic door open all the time during the warm months. It is located at the top of my stairs in the center of the house. I check the temperature with a thermometer upstairs and it is the same as downstairs (75-76). I keep my air flow set to downstairs. I have 3 adjustable bugscreens covering the attic opening side by side.

how does the motor know the difference between a damper or vent being used to slow air flow to an area? Dampers and vents both restrict air flow and cause back pressure on the motors.

This can be done by "staging" a multi-stage (like a two stage) system so that only a fraction of the system capacity runs if only one zone is calling. Otherwise airflow on a single stage system gets "bled off" to a dump zone, the unused zone, or a bypass back to the return. Check out my video on zoning

sorry it's not about adding more cool air upstairs it's about removing HEAT from upstairs by add or increasing the return duct flow , many older homes have no or very poor return duct flow, fix that and you will easily cool the upstairs

If I were to build a home I would use a mini split with multi zone indoor units upstairs and Split system AC downstairs.

had 4 different techs and another scheduled for tomorrow no one can figure out this damper system! 8 year old house, we moved in a few months ago. There was a previous freeze/leak before we moved in and allegedly fixed. We immediately have freezing up issues. First tech says system over charged and left. Second said blower motor bad. Replaced.next tech came when it froze again said bad damper replaced one damper. Froze again and blowing air out of return (tested w paper) next guy says oh your zoning board is bad and changed board. its not blowing downstairs good. So now the Honeywell board shows red light on zone 2 we can't seem to find the other damper to see if it needs replaced and it is still blowing air out of return and freezes up if we don't turn it off. Heat isn't blowing out of return but it isn't blowing downstairs and about a 10-20 degree difference. These dampers are huge problems for us and I only have unskilled people coming out apparently. I have a 6 guy who was installer originally coming on Thursday if this guy tomorrow fails to repair issue. ANY IDEAS???

#1 - Find a house that is built better than some others in the first place #2 - A cooler house means a lower heating bill #3 - Live with people who like the same tumperatures you do so you can all have a good tempurature in the house or living space and there is no difference from downstairs and upstairs.

Most of the public need marketing versions so they can understand things. If he were to discuss BTU's, fan speeds, two systems, 2 stage etc. most of the public will understand very little.
