Insomniac with the legendary level designs since 98.. Just amazing.

A little late to the party, but I wanted to comment! I'm the artist who built all these skyboxes! For the most part I agree with a lot of your rankings, but I have a few issues (and trying hard to not take anything personally!!) You really needed to have two lists or dual ranks, one for how the sky works within the level in the game, seeing it with the game's engine and effects; and one "flying around" with all effects and terrain removed, and hence it's simply the skyboxes you like. A number of times you wobbled back'n'forth as to what was being judged, how it worked in game vs how it looked all by itself. So in some cases a very simple skybox got high marks, while a very beautiful and complex skybox got marked down... once agian, trying to not take things too personally!! With regards to the Beast Maker levels, while I created all the skyboxes, I only built one of the worlds, that being Tree Tops. I never liked the fact that on the other Beast Maker levels there was just flat, boring nothing beyond the areas of gameplay. If I remember right there were some techincal isues with having very much out beyond "in the swamp". That is also why the skyboxes had to be so very simple, not having any mountains or other details along the horizon. It had something to do with everyting fading into the fog at a certain distance and if I built any trees or hills or huts into the skybox it didn't work with the way the fog worked. I have a number of issues with TFB's creative decisions in various places in Reignited, but when it came to the Beast Maker levels, they ROCKED! One thing you said, that at first I disagreed with, then realized that you had a point, and that is the skybox in the Artisan Homeworld. Looking back at it now, when viewed from within the level, I would would have gone through and tweeked the lighting in the level to better match the colors and emotion of the sky. I believe that the VERY first skybox done was the one for Stone Hill. I also believe that Ted Price (the CEO of Insominac) did the inital work on this sky, then handed it over to me clean up and to do the rest.

Hey thanks for watching. Craig stitt right? I think i saw your plaques on reddit the other day! Its an honor to get feedback from the man who made most of these wonderful skyboxes. I want you to know that i love every peice of art direction in these original games, and the ones i ranked lowly were only contextualized by how great others were. If i could give them all S, i would haha. Totally valid point about in game context vs solo skybox itself, i think i did a pretty good job at addressing that in this video, but admittedly some got the short end of the stick. Perhaps now i ought to examine spyro 2 and 3 skyboxes as some have requested. If you're ever curious on having a quick chat over discord about that, or reviewing them with me, do let me know. Your community involvement is highly cherished and I'm sure my audience would love to hear your takes and stories on how these were made. @@Dayoman I would LOVE to see you rank Spyro 2 & 3!! Other than here and there, I thought you did a great job ranking the skies! (and yes, it's hard to not just like them all!!... well... except a few. Occasionally I would disagree with something you were saying, but then you would explain your reasons a little more and I had to agree! One thing I meant to mention is I have no idea why the skybox for the Peace Keeper Homeworld was SO simple. It could have been a time thing, or just me thinking, "you can't see the sky from the bottom of the canyon" or both. Some of the other overly simple ones had reasons, but not that one, at least not that I can remember. I would love to be able to remember in what order these were made. The rough order is the order they show up in the game, but not necessarily. One way to tell is how complex the clouds and other features are. As I got better at doing them and the tools got better I was able to do more and more. I did just upload a bunch of stuff to Reddit. I'm planning on doing an AMA there and also start uploading some stuff from Ractchet & Clank, and Sonic as well. I'd love to talk and answer any questions and helpout in any way I can. I really need to get that Spyro world viewer so I can fly around and see the levels the same way I saw them while building them. Doing so just might help shake a few more memories loose! btw... I was completely surprised when I watched you make it all the way to Dream Weavers without gliding at all, and the rest of the game with just a single glide! I'm curious what the designers would say?

One curious thing about Spyro skyboxes is that usually they are just gigantic spheres or cubes with a texture of a sky attached, but the spyro's ones are actually modeled! Infact those clouds, terrains and moon/sun are actual painted vertices which gives the illusion of being a detailed image and providing all those nice-looking color shades! And the fact that they used a lot of polygons (a lot for the ps1 graphic standards, which is about ~600-1000, iirc) just for the sky truly reflect the amount of effort and care they put into them! D

Dayo I absolutely love this kind of in depth examination of Spyro, I don’t see creators doing this often and it’s fucking awesome thank you!!!!

D for Dragon. Seriously, how did no one else comment that yet? Seconding everyone else's opinion on doing Skybox Tier Lists for 2 and 3. This series helped me appreciate just how important skyboxes can be in regards to game atmosphere.

Dark Hollow's definitely got the most nostalgia points from me, as I played the Spryo 1 demo *long* before I ever played the actual full game, and Dark Hollow was one of the only playable levels there.

anyone else have like stringed together childhood memories, sometimes even years apart? Because now for some reason Spyro 1 (and only Spyro 1) reminds me of the dune miniseries on the scifi channel and I have no idea why...

I agree. Spyro 2 too in my opinion was so magically beautiful like the skyboxes, levels, music, story was decent-ish. Love all 3 though!

As great as spyro 1 is....I think it has the worst sky boxes. Now there are some really great ones like nasty's loot, but overall In 2 and 3 they get far more detail and I prefer those. But hey, they are still freaking amazing regardless. Actually coincidentally, I'm doing some little water color paintings of my favorite spyro sky boxes!
