What's the Best Gaming Laptop Display? Mini-LED vs OLED vs IPS

Ғылым және технология

It's time to settle the debate over which display is the best for gaming laptops. Every year we see new options with OLED, Mini-LED, and standard IPS displays, but it's hard to know what's best until you've seen them all in person. Is mini-LED blooming always bad? Does the dimming algorithm change everything? Is OLED going to burn in? Does IPS look dull?
In this video, I've done my best to use my camera's settings to demonstrate the vibrance, contrast, and brightness that you can expect from each of these screen technologies, as well as their pros, cons, and quirks. While only the human eye can see all of these differences at once, I think this will at least highlight piece-by-piece what is unique about each display type.

    I believe the "screen door effect" you're referring to on OLED displays is what's known as PWM (pulse width modulation). Lots of people have had issues with that due to causing eye strain and headaches.

  • @JoshCravesTech

    @JoshCravesTech

    3 ай бұрын

    No, it’s actually from the touch screen digitizer layer of the panel. PWM can also be a headache on some OLED’s for sure though, but what I’m referring to is specifically only on touchscreen OLED’s, they have this screen door effect issue. It almost looks like there’s a semi-transparent netting over the screen but only on bright/white backgrounds. It’s not a moving flicker, but more so a static element.

    Hey @joshcravestech , First off thank you for the wealth of information. Secondly, I really appreciate you mentioning the toggle between the multi-zone dimming on the Asus laptops but I'm curious; my primary concern with the (Rog series specifically) IPS panel laptops is the backlight bleeding and hotspots around the edges. Would disabling the multi-zone dimming essentially be an IPS like display but eliminate that edge bleeding? I'm assuming yes based on your info because it's not an edge lit panel? For me limiting that bleeding and unevenness is more important than deeper/richer blacks so that would be primary reason to switch. Would very much appreciate any info on that! Thank you again!

    Thank you very much for another very detailed review, it is great that you took the time to compare with us the different displays, because on our screens it is difficult to see the individual difference from one type to the other, if not compared against each other. Both Asus are the best in my opinion, except the mini led has no long term issue, but the Razer at the brightness in the review, seemed aggressive to my level of acceptance, so much that I would prefer the Legion IPS panel instead, I know you will say you can lower the brightness, but just wanted to reply as what was seen in the review. Kudos for this review, again a very high quality review, I have a very high respect of your higher than standard reviews.

    Amazing video Josh! Definitely the most useful video on this topic! What do you recommend, a yoga pro 9i with ultra core 9, 32gb ram, 3.2k 600nits mini-led touch, rtx 4060 (2300€) or Legion slim 7i glacier white with 13700h, 32gb ram, rtx 4060, 3.2k 400nits IPS screen (1550€) or a Asus Zephyrus G16 core ultra 9, 32gb , rtx 4060, 2.5k OLED 400nits (2400€). The Yoga is brand new with 3 years premium care warranty, while the Legion only has a one year warranty, and is from ebay, apparently had faulty ram which was repaired (checked repair ticket with lenovo) , the seller mentioned the faulty ram but claims the laptop was unused. The G16 is also brand new with a 2 year warranty. I would mainly use it for music production but like doing some color grading when I have the time. I don't game. I wanted something that was closest to a Windows Macbook Pro laptop. (good screen, build, good speakers, etc) I would love to know what your recommendation would be. Is the Yoga pro 9i/G16 worth 800€ more? (I still might have a chance to return the Yoga and buy the Legion if its still available, or get the G16) I absolutely love the design of the G16, but heard too many stories of people returning it because of the 3rd fan on the 4060/4070 models, so that's why I ordered the Yoga (and that mini-led). I need it to be quiet while recording in the studio, and the G16 has a high pitched whine even while web browsing. Some people apparently resolved the issue with G-helper, and/or BIOS updates, reinstalling windows. Some unfortunately still have the issue. I would really appreciate your advice. Thank you and all the best!

  • @JoshCravesTech

    @JoshCravesTech

    10 күн бұрын

    Yeah I think the G16 is the best personally, as far as premium features - beautiful display, best speakers I've ever heard on a laptop, almost as thin as a macbook air and lighter than a macbook pro, just overall great. Keep in mind the Yoga fans kick in around 42C so even in Silent mode it will also have active fans, and I believe the Legion Slim 7i does as well. That's the beauty of G-Helper is being able to turn off that 3rd fan completely and delay when all the fans turn on. For most people I've seen it seems to work wonders doing that. The Slim 7i is a good deal though, wow. The display won't be quite as impressive, and the battery life won't be as great, but that price is kinda too good!! If budget is a concern at all, I'd probably pick the Slim 7i for that alone. You can't go wrong with any of these though, they're all very solid options for what you're doing.

  • @bartsimpson2131

    @bartsimpson2131

    10 күн бұрын

    Honestly, I would've went with the G16 for looks and premium feel alone. I think the Yoga does have the best display out of the bunch, but doesn't look as good as the G16. I listened to reviewers, mostly complaining about the third fan and very noisy fans constantly turned on (Just Josh), and he said it was unacceptable. That's why I wrote it off. But now that I hear that its resolved, I kind of regret buying the Yoga. And its such a hassle returning the Yoga here in Europe, since I'm getting it delivered to another country... The Legion is a beautiful machine, but since its been fiddled with, and opened up, I was reluctant in making the purchase. Even though it could be perfectly fine. I spent so much time trying to make the right decision, seen so many reviews, reddit posts... I also later found out that the speakers on the Yoga are not as good as I initially thought (a reviewer said in a review that they were better than the ones on the G16, but then 2 other reviewers said the opposite). Would making the fans not turn on on the G16 affect the longevity of the components and laptop since it would constantly be warmer than it should?

  • @JoshCravesTech

    @JoshCravesTech

    10 күн бұрын

    @@bartsimpson2131 turning the fans down/off would not affect longevity, you should be fine! The laptop is built to throttle to prevent any damage from heat. That’s actually hilarious that someone said the Yoga speakers were better 🤣 But yeah personally the G16 is the most premium laptop I think I’ve ever used, and I don’t think the fans would turn me away. They’re still much better in comparison to anything from Acer, MSI, and even some Legion laptops I’ve used.

    Yes, most miniLED and OLED laptops use PWM for controlling brightness. The PWM frequency on the mini-LED laptops shown are MUCH higher than the range of being noticeable, so even people who are sensitive to it would likely not notice. However you have to be careful with some OLED laptops. A lot of people love the Legion Slim 14” OLED for example, but it has a low PWM frequency of only 240Hz which will definitely be noticeable and may hurt your eyes.

Music production is mostly reliant on the CPU with some VST plugins needing a bit of GPU power to operate smoothly, so Intel will always have a slight advantage in most cases. But the second you unplug, then AMD has the advantage. So it really comes down to the other aspects of a laptop that you prefer to have such as portability, battery life, display, keyboard/trackpad, etc.

    Did your Blade 16 come with an AUO or BOE panel? Had to return the Blade 16 with BOE MiniLED as it looked horrible on dark backgrounds. It had lots of blooming and random shadows across the screen. However, those that use light mode and white backgrounds only won't experience those issues. Gonna be getting an OLED model instead.

    Considering how MacBooks have moved to mini-LED, I’d say that’s the future for sure. Like I show in the video, you can always turn the dimming algorithm off on Asus laptops and it becomes just a really bright, accurate, and punchy IPS panel. I have an OLED external monitor that I will use as a reference for black levels when I use Photoshop/Premiere Pro, but it’s not that necessary to do.

  • @HaloinfiniteEternal

    modern Ips laptop panels such as the 240fps gsync models are very good with colors, and response time but the black levels without local dimming are atrocious, and the same is factual for lcd led panels without local dimming as it’s very difficult to enjoy darker games on those panels….. I think mini led with local dimming is the best of the best cause you get inky oled type blacks with higher brightness and no risk of burn in…..
