What's the Best Deer Mineral?

Time to put out mineral. I am trying several different brands to see which one works the best.

I haven't used mineral licks, due to hunting public land, but after our month of deer season here in New Brunswick, Canada, is over I put beef finisher out in my feeder (on my property) to help the deer through the winter months, as their feeding areas are cut down and sprayed by the big forestry company here, the wintering deer / moose yards are gone as well, so I do what I can to help the remaining herd along. My 1 acre land is also surrounded by naturally grown apple trees which also help.

I've been using lucky bucks apple scent for years. I try to get it out in march or April if possible, I'm like everyone else as far as wanting to help horn growth on bucks, but I really do it just as much for the unborn fawns and does, them does lick on that and it gets in there system and really gives the unborn fawns a Jumpstart in my opinion. Plus after a hard winter like we have in Wisconsin, all the deer need some extra help getting that mineral back in there system. Love your channel. Keep em coming

I love lucky buck, especially the smell but it’s a touch pricey when you’re running multiple spots. So I created my own mineral mix which includes trace minerals, mixing salt, decalcium phosphate, beef minerals and I’ll use cherry kool aide the first few times for a little more scent. Being doing this mix for about 5 years now and have holes you can about burry a small adult it. Seem to have healthier deer and not as many spikes now. We’ve harvested some nice bucks of off it ranging from 120’s to 150’s class.

I've put out salt on stumps before just to see what happened but the last I checked we aren't allowed to hunt within 100 yards of anything that could be used to attract deer here in PA that hasn't been removed at least 30 days prior. At least I think that's how it went. I never planned on using any so I haven't brushed up on the rules pertaining to that in years. I know the deer here in the Chestnut ridges will draw to the roads in winter and spring to lick salt from them. The soil here is full of iron for sure and I've seen calcite deposits in caves I've been in and there is a lot of limestone so I would imagine there's plenty of calcium too. Beyond that I'm not sure. Thanks for another great video.

Here in western NC we have been using loose trophy rock in the 30lb bag and lucky buck. We pour the trophy rock on stumps or rotten logs and same with the lucky buck and both get hammered. The lucky buck draws bears in while the TR doesn't. Just yesterday 8/14/23 I had a momma bear with 3 cubs spend 2+ hours licking and pawing at the stump the lucky buck was poured on. That stump so far has had 7 different bucks and 5 different bears coming to it. We reapply every other month.

But the doe’s had it tore up but would only visit it for a week or two after their fawn’s were born, so yes I think it important for health new fawn’s before their born are at least mommy think so 👍✌🏻🇺🇸

My all time best results come from plane Ol Deer Cane. I’ve tried them all pretty much. One thing though, for deer cane, you wanna put that out right after deer season, the earlier in the year the better. I’ve had best results pouring it on freshly cut stumps…I’m talking, they will uproot the dang thing. Now for a more instant attractant, I really prefer Lucky Buck. Good vid again man. I am skeptical of putting mineral out. Deer dig holes in ground they hit the mineral so hard then you get a hole that holds water... stagnant water attracts biting midges that transmit EHD. Also concerned about deer picking prions up from the dirt and concentrating deer saliva and the consequences that may have for CWD transmission. I think you can really increase the minerals your deer get by doing TSI and flush cutting species that deer prefer to browse. Those stump resprouts are super high in minerals.

They’re going to share stagnet water holes regardless. I’m not sure there is any scientific factual data that proves salt licks that hold water are prone to increase the risk. I would doubt the prions would live in most mineral licks due to the high salt content anyway. I’m not a biologist though, only my opinion here.

no offense, to those who do it, what is reason or thought process of putting mineral on stumps? no all stumps are created equal. is it a visual thing for deer or you? i have run thousands of lbs of mineral over last 35 yrs, never on stumps. also, i have guys comment often, does and fawns are eating it up! trust me, it adds to herd health, and fawns will grow into big bucks and big healthy does.

Not a fan of shooting animals over bait. I prefer to hunt for them. I really enjoy watching your videos, hope your not going to start shooting animals over bait.

Do you or will you for a long time subscriber allow me to welcome you to my house and then to my property for consultation advice? Any or all fees you have I will be honored to pay. Im just a young man with 40 acres in Bama with no intermediate family. Love your show and will continue to watch forever. Let me know if your willing to walk my property with me and after that eat a solid Alabama meal and let me pay you for your time obviously. Reach out to me and let me know if this is an option. I would love to hear your recommendations. Thanks as always JB.
