WHAT'S THE BEST ARDBEG? Core Range Review

What's the best Ardbeg whisky within the core range?
Entire Ardbeg Core Range Review. 10 Year Old. An Oa. Uigeadail. Corryvreckan. Plus my two cents on Non Age-Statement Whisky.
Scores:
After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
88-92.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
93-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
96+ - The meaning of life.

I was in Scotland about a year and a half ago, and, naturally, I wanted to get some scotch to bring home to Ontario. I was on my way to take a ferry out to see a castle on the Isle of Mull, and we stopped at a corner shop on the way out. It just so happened that there was a little whiskey shop attached to it, so I went in and had a look, and was immediately overwhelmed by the choices and variety. I wound up blindly grabbing a bottle of Ardbeg 10. I didn't know you could get it at the LCBO, haha. Looking back, I should have done some research and grabbed something that you can't find here. No regrets, though. Ardbeg 10 is incredible. I also wound up randomly coming across a bottle of Lagavulin 16 in the gift shop of that ferry for around 50 Scottish pounds, which was a whiskey that I had been seeking out. At the time, you couldn't get it at the LCBO where I live, but you can now. Ah well, live and learn.

Your quickly becoming my favorite whisky reviewer. There are many others I watch regularly but I just discovered your channel and get excited to hear your take on my new purchases. I've had several bottles of the classic 10 I I decided to take the leap and get the corryvreckan and uigeadail. Both amazing. This week I bought the An Oa for 47$ usd. Priced the same as ardbeg 10 here. I look forward to trying it in the coming weeks and I'll surely be coming back to your video to do an Ardbeg flight with you

Great to see another excellent reviewer online - the more the merrier! I can easily identify with your sentiments about the core range, even though the Uigy probably ends up my top pick due to those intriguing sherry notes that add to the complexity. Cheers! P.S. Your pop up note-taker goes on strike whenever you say "licorice"!

I bought my first Islays today. The Uigeadail and Laphroaig 10. Both proved wonderful introductions to peat. I can't be sure which I like more. They are so different, yet amazing in their own ways. Uigeadail is like smoked brisket, and Laphroaig made me realize how much peat and black licorice have in common.

The first Ardbeg I tried was the 10. It blew me away! I immediately wanted to try the other varieties. Went for the Uigeadael next. WOW! This became my favorite scotch (even more than Lagavulin 8). The next variety I tried was the An Oa. It has the nice campfire/peat finish that you'd expect from a good scotch. However, it had a nose and pallet that were, in my opinion, too sweet. I agree with Jeremy here that the An Oa is cool if you're looking to try something a little different. It's interesting to get the campfire/peat notes along with the sweet notes. But for *me*, the point of drinking scotch is to luxuriate in flavors that remind you of the sea, campfires, smoked meats, citrus, leather, etc. Its a very distinct flavor profile you're going for with scotch, which kind of take you to a destination (if that makes sense). If I want sweet or medicinal flavors, on the other hand, I'll buy American or Canadian whiskey. My $0.02. Great review!! Can't wait to try the Corryvreckan! Subbed!

I've bought bottles of all the expressions, except the Corryreckan. I had only a 50 ml of that. I love Ardbeg peat, no medicinal notes for me. I would probably agree with your scoring as well. As far as AGED vs NAS bottles, I would disagree with you. I prefer age because the odds of a better whisky is in my favor. I've had to many NAS bottles that were to young or sharp and I'm personally looking for complexity. Yes I've had some decent NAS bottles and some aged bottles that were just ok. For the most part, I will stick with a nice aged whisky. Great review.

I'm in Ontario Canada. 10yr - 55 u.s vs 100 lcbo. An Oa - 65 u.s vs 130 lcbo. Uigladail - 69 u.s vs 173 lcbo. Corry - 79 u.s vs 200 lcbo. No Ardbeg for me at these prices...ever. Like your reviews though but envy the prices you get them for.

you must try the Corryvreckan .....I've had it on the tour of Ardbeg distillery on Islay .....and just had another bottle here at home .......the smells and the flavors and the mouth feel throws me right back to Ardbeg on Islay ..........yes also a huge fan of Laphroaig and Lagavulin ........Laphroaig 10 year old and quarter cask made me want to go to visit Islay .......Ardbeg tour was the best though...

I have the 10, the Uigeadail and of course the Corryvreckan. Not the An Oa. Your review gives exactly my opinion. The Corry is fantastic. I am sure I will alway have a bottle near by. The 10 was my first contact with Ardbeg. Oh, no.. my first taste of Ardbeg was the Ardbeg Alligator. The best whisky I ever had. Very expensive special, over 300$ now. All Ardbegs have that 'Alligator touch' as I call it. The Corry comes close. Very close. Ardbegs are fantastic.

I have the corry, it's the only Ardbeg I've tried and I like it a lot. I have the lagavulin 16, talisker 10, compass box peat monster and laphroaig 10 and 3 wood. Is the Ardbeg 10 worth a try? I seem to like peated scotches a little younger.

At $79, you’re getting the Corryvrecken for about $10 less than the lowest pice you can pick it up for in the UK, about £65.
