What's the benefit of a highly resolving system?

Ғылым және технология

PS Audio engineers worked what seems nearly a lifetime of endlessly tweaking and polishing their products to the highest standards of resolution only to have them perform on unresolving systems of customers. What's the point? Have a question you want to ask Paul? www.psaudio.com/ask-paul/
I have finished my memoir! You can go read it now: www.amazon.com/gp/product/173... It's called 99% True and it is chock full of adventures, debauchery, struggles, heartwarming stories, triumphs and failures, great belly laughs, and a peek inside the high-end audio industry you've never known before.
I plan a few surprises for early adopters, so go to www.paulmcgowan.com and add your name to the list of interested readers. There's an entire gallery of never before seen photos too.

That’s one of the biggest allures of my system.... how well it can resolve and dig down, find all the things that usually can’t be heard on regular output Devices. I love it when there’s a ton going on and your system can resolve that one horn usually smothered like in Sol Invictus by Audiomachine.... there’s a certain horn that is rather hard to resolve clearly and when that comes out... I usually smile like Jeff Goldblum and say... WELL THERE IT IS!

Great answer and, it makes a lot of sense. I would say, one buys the best speakers one can afford and then matches them with electronics that _make an audible difference_ with these speakers. If s/he reaches a stage where no difference can be heard, there's no point buying more expensive and highly resolving amps and sources. That's why, I have always subscribed to the theory of spending money on a very good set of speakers and then, match them with amplification that does them justice.

The flip side of a highly resolving system is that, while yes, your superbly mastered HD recordings will sound amazing, your high end system is also going to make the lousy recordings sound like crap. Even with a Sprout and AMT driven speakers...half my music collection now sounds like the crappy recordings they are. Totally worth it, don't get me wrong, but you may need to reassess your sources....

What you say is true, but listenability depends on the musical performance. I have a lot of recordings made between ~1930 and 1950 that are atrocious technically. Nevertheless I still obtain a great deal of pleasure from listening to them. Example: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fX-AmsGNgJa1cZc.html

My take: "average gear" all fails in different ways. Testing on one set of "average gear" doesn't get you closer to knowing what the "average person" will hear. So go for resolution and accuracy in testing.

If I bought a BHK Signature amp and it failed to "resolve" and reveal all the little nuances .. I too would be on the phone to Boulder City !! Whether an amp works well with a particular speaker depends on its compatibility with the speaker's impedance curve. Some high end speakers do have very savage curves dipping right down to low values ..

Inferior components Will suffer when used with highly resolving components. I’m my experience, highly resolving speakers and amps will always Reveal weaknesses of inferior sources, but that’s a good thing if you are serious about hifi.

Yeah but there's resolving and there's resolving the RS5 are coloured they're not flat they have a crossover you are designing your equipment for particular speaker, what could sound completely different somebody else's design with a different type of speaker topologys . you need a speaker that doesn't have a crosses like cube audio that would be the ultimate revealing resolving speaker for your Design purposes.

when you look for things like 'resolving power' or 'definition' or things like that, you look at audio the wrong way in the first place. it's either messed up or not so messed up. more so when you think about 'upgrading' it's just not how it works. when you design a system, you don't look at those magical properties, you look at the problems each equipment/component is going to cause and look for a way to mitigate those problems. for example, you use small woofers to avoid beaming and that results in reduced head room due to excursion limits so you mitigate that by using higher order crossover and that results in higher group delays so you mitigate that by putting the woofers in sealed enclosure but that pushes the f3 of the woofers up so you add a sub to cover the rest of the bottom end, etc. that's how it works. you don't push it up, you keep it from falling down.

What do you mean when you reference "Ohm's law readers"? Is this someone who agrees that Ohm's law is useful at a fundamental level when designing analog circuits? Is it to point out that there are people who don't agree that it is a basic concept and true? It just makes no sense when you use the term in such a varied context like you do.

Insert sarcasm here - Well yeah the main benefit of a highly resolving system is that you will be vindicated in your impression that most of today's recordings, by the time they are mastered and transferred, are crappy... And now you can hear all of that crappiness highly resolved on your system!

If you want a resolving system get studio gear..studio monitors

Studio monitors are not always the best for listening to music for leasure. Many monitors are far from neutral. They are resolving, yes. But they often exaggerate upper mids which sounds terrible for playback. There is nothing wrong getting studio monitors. Some can sound good, but it's not the ultimate answer. Good studio monitors are insanely expensive. and most are active. And they are usually not nice as furniture. But there are some exceptions. There are plenty of high resolving hifi speakers and amplifiers on the market. There is no need to get a studio monitor to get resolving system. But of course it's just to try it out if you want. Nobody stops you. There are some very good studio monitors on the market too.

@@r423sdex As I didn't know that 😊. But studios also test mixes on hifi system too, before finalizing the mix. HiFi speakers are usually kinder to the ears than studio monitors. Most larger studios have at least one set of studio monitors and one set of hifi speakers. But for listening at home for lessure I would choose hifi speakers.
