Great review. I enjoy how your engineering background leads you to things that normal reviewers would never notice. I have had my V169 for a couple of weeks and I have also been wonderfully impressed. I don't have the problem with the cap meeting the body like yours does. Mine sits about like the Narwhal so I kind of chalk this one up to variances in manufacturing tolerances. Strangely, my clip also leans to the right. I figured it was just Chinese quality control but based on our sample size of two, there seems to be something in the process that is causing the bend. The things I have read indicate that Asvine is an OEM manufacturer for other Chinese brands and after looking at the packaging and some of the designs in this pen, it is safe to say that we know where Moonman pens are coming from. Keep up the great work. Love the enthusiasm and the delivery.

Clip can also get stuck on some of the cut outs when you untwist the cap

I think Narwhal recently added a finer nib at the bottom end and then shifted everything they had up one step, so the "new" double broad is the old broad, the broad is the old medium, etcetera.

About the box… I’m guessing that with Moonman rebranded to Majohn, they had a whole bunch of Moonman branded boxes left over that are being used by other manufacturers working from the same factory. I guess that if this new pen brand does ok, they’ll eventually get their own branded boxes.

@@archivist17 I am not sure they own Delike. But all three likely get made in the same factory, whether there is ownership relationship, or just contractual is the question. PenBBS does the design, and gas a few places contract manufacture their pens in batches. Likely using same factory leads to commonalities between these three brands even if no ownership commonalities exist. (Although I don't know one way or the other.)

Parker used to be a wider line than the competition, too. Basically so people didn't confuse them for a Sheaffer's (my '47 51 Vacumatic is an extra fine that's almost identical to the Sheaffer's fine from the same period, for example.) Don't think that there's any standardisation even today. Nice to see this from your perspective, and from your background. It is a pen that's on my radar, and your perspective helps!

Okay this does it. i have seen some reviews but this one tipped me over the edge. Thank you very much for the review and I love the "nitpicking". It was a bit of fun and I hope they are taking the advice, especially the packaging and the documentation stuff might not be a good look for the stuff they put out (they are Chinese btw).

You think with your background you'd be able to run a cost of a pen vs the retail price of the pen? I'd be really interested to have an estimate on what it would cost to manufacture the pen you're reviewing. I think the blue color of the acrylic is cool. Rest of the pen - seen it! Wait, did you do any writing samples lol?

Cost analysis is pretty tricky especially when trying to determine overhead costs in other countries (eg. wages, building, power, raw materials, etc). Also, with everything I did it was all precision equipment so gear was always over built. These type of items I wouldn't have much of an idea of actual production costs.

DB you are a Master 🙏 🌟🌟🌟 I would have never thought you'd get down and dirty, yet so deep into analysis. So many things you pointed out that nobody has not done ever, in the hundreds of fountain pen reviews posted in the T00b. We are so blessed to have your insights. I have been waiting to receive a clear one for 3 weeks now. It will be interesting to see how different each unit's small defects are. At least the overall writing experience should be great, based on what you and crisrap52 have posted.

Thanks buddy 👍. There are still a few things I can point out but figured that was about good enough lol. I not only like to take something apart, I like to put the story together. All these little things are like clues. Clues to how the people think, what they know, what they've worked/not worked on before. How much they really care about what they do, or at least how much they are allowed to care based on time & money. I can tell if something is built with passion & a relentless pursuit of perfection, or a good enough attitude. That's what fascinates me the most. What the people who built something were thinking & what they we like. And from the small details, I can start to put that story together. And yes, it writes pretty good 😉

Great review. I like the design of the barrel with the cut outs but the box seemed to be the proverbial tip of the iceberg of issues.

Excellent review. Translation is a bit weird, but I think the refill instructions were bottom aligned and that would explain why they were off at the tops. Have you thought about making your own fountain pen, The DoodlePen?

I have one of these ordered that is supposed to arrive Monday. Blue-gray (same color you have here) with an EF nib. I like a pen with some real heft, so I don't think the weight will be an issue for me. I have several Wing Sung pens (3003, 3008, and 3013) where the clip is held in with a screw in a similar manner to this, and yes, the ones I have inked up have rusted from moisture in the cap due to temperature change condensates, etc. I'm glad to hear this is a brass screw. From a cost perspective, I don't know if a raw brass screw would be more or less than a raw stainless steel or even aluminum screw, but I would not have used a plated screw. I just don't think that was a necessary step in the production process. I'm looking forward to my pen arriving Monday. If they take your advice and make an improved, updated version of this at ROUGHLY the same price point, I don't think I would feel bad about investing in one of the upgraded pens when the time comes, either.

The plating was to go with the overall esthetics of the pen and make things consistent. It looks really good when you look into the cap and see consistency. However, I'm not a fan of plating a fastener.

@@Doodlebud The cost is on it being a custom made screw, and not the plating, as it all gets platted, as the other parts are brass as well. I get they wanted the same shiny sheen on all the metal parts.

Excellent review. These insights are most valuable. If the lessons are learned and translated into real business practices, they turn unimpressive products into must-have classics. On the list of perfectible details, I would highlight even more the unfortunate choice of the brand name. I doubt that the owner of this brand, Mr Xiaohong Li, is aware of the spontaneous, rather laughable connotations associated with Asvine. He may have intended a poetic or romantic allusion to a climbing rose, but unfortunately scatological interpretations quickly take over in the minds of most English, German and other Western language speakers. Ending the logo with a rose is not enough to eclipse the pejorative connotations. The tiny rose is not very noticeable and even if it were, the appeal of other readings is stronger. Sooner or later, a dissatisfied customer or a malicious competitor will use it against them.

Can you give me please some more information about what you are referring to ? The only information I've found I'd that Asvine is rare female Sanskrit name used by Tamil people in Sri Lanka... What does Asvine means in English ?

@@korax67 The word itself means nothing in English. However, it sounds like several two-word combinations. Turn on the subtitles (click on the [CC] button) while watching the beginning of the review and you will see one of the less objectionable two-word homonyms Google's AI came up with. With a Germanic accent, you'll get a weird drink. In Icelandic, let's just say that you wouldn't want to drink anything that came out of this side of a donkey. And, on second thought, the orifice doesn't matter. One may also hear a funnier expression, but it involves inserting plants into your you-know-what or the explosive consequence of eating too much spicy food. Having a flower in the logo doesn't help. There are more offensive interpretations but I let them to your imagination. Knowing that, imagine the day when Asvine releases a wooden pen. The French will surely make jokes like « Je veux bien qu'ils fassent feu de tout bois mais il y a toujours bien des limites.»

Thanks for the review, but I think you got a dud, 'Bud, because my section doesn't unscrew when I unscrew the cap, my pen's clip is perfectly straight, and my box says "Asvine" (not "Moonman")! Yes, the cap wobbles when it's upside-down, but it's a convex cap, so not unexpected, right? I don't find the uncapped pen heavy (and I like lighter pens)--it's well-balanced (as well-balanced as my uncapped Namisu Nova Aluminum, if not more) and very comfortable to hold. I think the pen is a fantastic value for the money. I hope they follow all of your suggestions, but at the same time, I worry about them doubling the price of the pen 🤣

Doodlebud: Quality Control Meister to the fountain pen community! Perhaps you should start charging consultation fees for your sound advice for existing and upcoming fountain pen companies. Moonman box and the instructions look very much like what I've gotten with Wing Sung pens, down to the diagrams. It's interesting how these Chinese companies seem to share so much.

I’m looking to get this pen in the near future. I just ordered the Majohn a1 which is their copy of the pilot vanishing point. I need one for work because I work in a machine shop and all the metal dust and bits get in my threads and I don’t like it. I wanted to try the copy before I shell out 150 bucks for the pilot. Hoping the click function and seal will work out at… uh.. work Especially considering I just had to send my BRAND NEW pilot custom 74 back to pilot. I don’t want to spend another 150 bucks and have to send it back and wait for it to work properly. This was my first pilot pen and my first gold nib and it was disappointing I had to immediately send it to pilot after I got it

Okily dokily. I had decided not to buy this pen, but then figured out that unposted its weight is comparable to my Parker Urban posted-which I find very comfortable. So we shall see. Due to arrive today. The other concern I had, is the section unscrewing with the cap. To address that I plan to try my mountain bike/Lamy Logo hack (Logo-man do I hate that pen-section always unscrewed itself WHILE I WAS WRITING…). Beeswax aka ‘nature’s Loctite’ on the section theeads to the body. It works pretty well to keep my mountain bike parts from vibrating loose on my city’s crappy roads and was ok on the reviled Logo-maybe it will hold the v169 section to the body well enough that it won’t unscrew with the cap.

Missed a perfect opportunity too say that it's the best writing experience sofar this year. :)

... and this is a perfect example of the difference between a good review and a GREAT review. LOVED the engineer's steely eye and laser focus, Doodlebud! That said ... this pen, now in my hands, is ... kind of amazing. The nib is perfectly - and I mean perfectly - tuned, with what I guess I'd call a 'gold standard' smoothness and flow (exemplary, for a Fine). Looks and feels great; fills perfectly. I hope the Asvine folks listen to your observations, and take it to the next level. Because - they got game!

Yeah as a pen it writes wonderfully! Smooth, aligned, flow all the boxes are checked. Tough to make a perfect pen at this price point with all the features they put into it. A few small details and they can compete with more expensive brands. If they have to bump the price a bit (which they would) I'd be more than happy to pay for the end result.

@@Doodlebud well ... there's always the Visconti Watermark, if you have around $1,700 you don't know what to do with (!) and - deepest respect to Visconti - but their nibs *may* (may...) not work right out of the box.

@@Doodlebud And the nib flexes a bit with no ill effect or too much force, so that is a nice feature. Wouldn't call it flex by any means, but won't spring easily like Duke nibs do.

@@Doodlebud For their price Visconti's QA sucks, as the odds of it writing right out the box are not perfect, but at that price it should write well one hundred percent of the time. If it doesn't QA should not let it out the factory/palazzo gates.

Leave that metal skeleton off, to save on that heavy posting. Got it in EF. Gold.. it writes SO smooth. I’m a new subscriber. WOW. You are The Engineering Pen Master, indeed. This is only my second Fountain pen. Grabbed a Duke w/ a FUDE nib. So I really want a good flex nib maybe fine or medium for my art. Do you know if u can get a flex on the Indigraph? Haven't heard of the indigraph so not sure. It's a pretty good pen for the money. There lots going on at that price point: vac filler, looks cool, very smooth nibs. So that's why I broke that review into 2 parts. It's a good pen BUT.... how could make it great & it wouldn't take much actually

So just got into fountain pens and just bought this in gold/green, of course I'm getting all kinds of pen videos and see this one from a year ago, it's Dec. 16th 2023 and I like the pen the clip is not mis-aligned the cap stays on top securely although I don't cap it, over all happy with the pen for the price.

Nice review with improvement tips, and yes, it feels heavy and slippery for longer writing sessions. It reminds me of the Visconti Skeleton pen, though the Asvine design looks a tad unrefined. The devil is in the details.

It's pretty damn good for the price. But a bit more refinement & this can compete with pens several times the price. Curious what they will come out with. There's a lot going on for this price. Vac filler, acrylic, metal skeleton over top, amazing nib. I'll keep an eye out for whats next

Every time I write "alot" , it autocorrects to a lot. "Alot" is underlined in red right here while I'm typing.

This pen appears to be‘talk of the town’ in fountain pen community..I’ve heard in another review that that they give a warranty on this pen which I guess is uncommon among Chinese pens.. However, I am a kind of disappointed by confusing branding, Chinese English etc.. which you’ve pointed out..These make this product look less professional than I imagined earlier and I may think twice before spending those extra $$ compared to $10-15 I’m used to spending on China made pens !

"She's so fine my sweet Asvine", that is free marketing advice! :) I'd take the free QC advice as well. Nice video Bud, thank you! This unit would look great in raw bronze, I think. Knowing that it performs well writing is nice, but I probably wouldn't buy such a heavy pen except to decorate my desk, maybe. You got to give it to the Chinese for trying to make things better, or just make good things, but just knowing how much they pay their people is sad, the sadder thing is that most stuff in our stores comes from China, sorry I got sidetracked by the current inflation rate.... After I saw your "best engineered pen" video I went and bought a Lamy 2K (thanks man), then after I saw that Ensso Italia video I went and bought three Ensso, see what you're doing to me? Now I want to go buy a Narwhal :) Keep up the good content, I'm slowly working through your videos and I am afraid of what I might become when I'm finished, but I am a fan now.

@@martinlebl631 Yeah I agree, but specially DoodleBud's reviews, he has great observations, great humor and no BS, which is great for me, that of course is my opinion, worth about .02 Satoshis, maybe even less than that.

It seems like the o-ring on the section threads would have prevented the section from coming off so easily; at least my sense is that usually o-rings add some friction and resistance to unscrewing threads. And you don't want that section coming off that easily anyway, you would only take it off for cleaning. So maybe they need something slightly different in the o-ring -- thickness, or material, or something -- in addition to the design change between the cap and section/barrel. Anyway, good discussion, full of things to think about. I would argue about the quality of the translation compared to Japanese products, and the print quality of the instructions, as being a little fussy for a $36 vacuum-fill pen that writes well (and that comes in 4 acrylic colors and 2 metal colors). That's just me. If I were going to change anything in the translation area it would be the name! They need someone who speaks English who know how that sounds.

Oring change is a bit of a Band-Aid approach I think. Orings are primarily designed to provide a seal. In this case, the end of the grip section is supposed to be in contact with the inner step inside of the cap. So here it should be a matter of a dimension change in the part to allow for proper clearance. Pretty good considering the price, but a bit more attention can make it really good

@@Doodlebud I have a few pens where there is an o-ring below the threads right where barrel meets section just so the connection tightens up, and takes some force to unscrew, so it only unscrew intentionally, and not while taking off the cap. My V169 does seem to touch, so this doesn't happen. Some tolerance issues. Clip is crooked as well though.

Great review. Using chrome and brass is for cost, for sure. I have a Visconti Skeleton using titanium for the overlay. Weight is less and is non corrosive. I am not a big fan of heavier pens unless it is well balanced. Metal section is not a horrible day thing if you have some texture on the surface. Look at the ēnsso you have. Chrome is very slippery. Cross pens have grooves on the grip area for their chrome pens. Overall an excellent review. Thanks again.

@@martinlebl631 unfortunately it was pretty expensive from the beginning with a convertible rollerball / ballpoint being over $200. I have the second version with a glossy finish and a pencil converter included. So, you could use it as a rollerball, ballpoint and a pencil.

You could use blue tack, Sugru glue or Kintsuglue to protect the screw in the cap from rusting...

Yup, or they could think about this stuff during the initial design phase. Easy to fix. Stainless steel screw or even lower cost could be the same screw but a little plastic/silicon disk that is installed to cover the screw. Companies shouldn't be expecting users to fix their oversights. Same for the issue where the barrel unscrewed instead of the cap. All they need to do is reduce the bore depth on the step inside the cap by about 0.3-0.5mm. Costs absolutely zero $$$ to fix that as its something to update in a drawing.

I never read the manuals so I would’ve been blissfully unaware of picture alignments or grammar. Maybe I missed it but were the cut outs sharp or were they smoothed out afterwards? The metal should be sought enough to round down.

Has anyone tried using teflon on the section threads?

Someone should make a Sub-micron pen just for the hell of it! An EDMed Zero clearance pen would be freaking awesome as well!

I'd like to see one made on the other end of the spectrum. Made with old school straight up mechanical machinery. A scraper, Moore jig borer, etc. Those things fascinate me!

Well, a great review from an engineer point of view ! Regarding the pen, it is definitely a Chinese pen, obviously made by Moonman that is trying to find a new name for its brand. On ebay they describe it as inspired by Doric ancient Greek temple (LOL). To me it looks like a copy of Visconti Skeleton Personally I've done my milage with Chinese pens so it will have to be something really interesting to care about.

Nope, he would attack it with his box cutter, and then check scratch resistance, and likely snap it in half. Only all metal pens would likely escape unscathed, as most resin and injection molded pens can likely be snapped in half by Jerry.

Should fit "most" pens that take a #6 nib. Of course any Jinhao, but I also tried it in my Opus, my Ensso, etc

My problem with the instructions is the line spacing. Each step should have a smaller line space so the step 'reads' as one thought. More space between steps or bullets. Just a lazy designer? Or a designer that is under the gun to get it done? Someone who is not a graphic designer? The line spacing bothers me like nails on a chalk board.

Even pickier than I am lol. Was impressed this was done on a 4 color offset press! These won't be getting updated anytime soon! Would have done a large run to have the savings in initial setup. Wouldn't be surprised if I see these exact same instructions on other pens from other brands 🤔🤔🤔

It is obviously way more than is needed for the small fixes, I just wondered if at that (much) higher price these, or similar, issues still exist. I have a cheap vs expensive one coming up on 2 VERY popular pens. Found some interesting Easter eggs!

The primary deal killer for me on this pen is the thin, concave, smooth, metal section- then there’s everything else you pointed out. It may be a smooth writer, but if that’s the only thing going for it, I may as well stick to Narwhals. If a pen manufacturer is bringing something new to the table, they have to do it right, or otherwise, don’t bother.

It is pretty slick, definitely not for everyone. Easy to incorporate some features to help with grip

There could be a few ribs put into the section to aid in grip. Similar to the Lamy imporium grip section. Just need to ensure the minimum feature sizes will still work when taking into account the thickness of the chrome plating.

@@Doodlebud punchlines. Always wonder why there are so many smooth metal sections. Just put some knurling on them, which would make them a lot grippier, even if you choose to plate them with slick chrome finish.

Looks to be "inspired" by the Visconti Watermark. They need to get their own design language. Another Chinese copy :( . Great video and detailed review. Thank you so much for the video and content .... better than most TV shows on :)

Was it branded Moonman? In the bottom corner of the box its saying Moonman in this review.

No it’s branded twsbi in the center lid but it appears to be the same plastic box, as if they are branded on order of bulk supply.

@@michaels3429 Most probably is a third party manufacturer for the box and TWSBI or Moonman are buying them from the same place and then asks to be branded in their name.

I think they will probably take some of your advice. All in all, you would be saving them some money on materials.

There was a "Montblanc meisterstuck solitaire blue hour skeleton" fountain pen that this Asvine looks like is trying to copy. So I would not be surprised if this is Moonman making fun of Montblanc and call it an Asvine :). This pen is made in China for sure... and most probably is made by Moonman, but maybe they are trying to come up with a new brand under them? Who knows... Moonman is been going crazy lately anyway.

It' s not that heavy. You might like it being lighter, but MANY people prefer heavy pens. I have one pen that weighs almost three times what this one does. That's why we buy metal. Within reason, of course, heavy pens are much better for long writing sessions. Used properly, they reduce cramping and hand fatigue because the pen does more of the work. Even the Arthritis Foundation has been recommending heavier pens.

I took computer engineering (hardware) but with my work it was always mechanical & optical heavy. But needed electrical & computer as well so it came in handy

Looks like another great vacuum filler.

As a pen it works well. Nib is great, filler is great, but a few tweaks and the pen has a bunch of potential

I think microscoping the instruction manual is going a bit too far.
