I find myself running only large scale stuff now. I remember back in 07 we held a few big events here in Michigan and a few brought the 5b. Very impressed. With the exception of my crawlers, my Xmaxx is my go to now

I wish I still had my old Ultima. Great memories. I’m 49 and in my mid 30’s, my Ultimate along with 2 RC 10s and other vintage rc cars was thrown out:-(. They were in my parents attic. Should have taken them with me when I bought a house. I did end up building a few reissued rc cars during the pandemic:-).

Looks like a very satisfying build. More like working on 1:1 than smaller scales stuff. In fact not too different from working on a mountain bike at that scale. I could enjoy that. Can’t wait to see it run with your chosen electronics.

HPI also had the Baja 5b SS which was a kit version of the gas with included upgrades.

Waste of money, just get a king motor. It’s the same quality plastics if not better and comes complete with electronics and a motor along with essential aluminum upgrades. Put the extra $300 you’d need to complete this laughable kit into savings for an obr. Anyone that says otherwise is a complete joke. Don’t give this greedy corporation your money, this kit is a rip off. It’s got a really nice rovan rc 9mm cv axle in the kit though! That’s gotta make it worth it🤣🤣

This is such a cool build. Always wanted a 5b. Now it's really one of these. Can't wait to see yours and kpop go up against each other.

Awesome video, I hope they will offer a kit for us that have the original gas powered Baja to convert it to electric. The Castle 2028 800kv will be perfect for that buggy. I'm super excited about this kit!

I picked up my first Baja back in 2005/2006 having pre-ordered it through Tower Hobbies. It’s an amazing platform that spawned my obsession with RC. The scale of the vehicle doesn’t disappoint and it’s evident in your excitement for this build. Thanks for sharing that excitement with the community!

@@scalebuildersguild That’s a good question and I don’t have an answer. I used to do crazy builds and would strip and re-anodize the alloy parts. I can tell you that I don’t have any purple parts left. But, I do have a handful of Baja’s from back in the day.

This is an exciting kit. Wow, you really buckled down to get as far as you did as fast as you did on the build. Thanks for bringing us along!

Really looking forward to seeing this up and running. I’m so glad HPI decided to rere the Baja 5b. (Still can’t afford one though 😂)

I remember wanting one of these so bad. Settled for a Blitz SC truck and was not disappointed.

I have the original gas 5B and 5T..sitting for quite sometime now. will have to take em out!

BAHAHAHA 01 livery.... Never even considered one of these until now, looks amazing!

Matt! HPI DID do a kit version of this back in the day, it was the 5BSS kit, it came with everything the RTR had but minus radio gear but also the RTR purple anodized parts were orange, also a clear body shell and a chrome stinger exhaust which was absolutely deafening! Took me about 3 evenings after work to build it, was an awesome build and went together beautifully. I hope Proline re-re the under tray shell again as this was a god send back in the day for keeping all the crud out of the chassis. I REALLY need one of these cars back in my life, damn my finances!

What’s on the bench, jumbo edition😂 Gulf livery might be a neat option even though it doesn’t have anything to do with buggies or HPI.

Totally with you on the kit vs RTR...I much prefer building my rigs than getting an RTR. RTRs have their place, but I much prefer kits personally. Cool buggy and great vid as always!

I usually call RTRs "Ready to Reassemble", cause I havent seen a single RTR that works good out of the box. Underfilled shocks/diffs, incorrect setup that drives like crap, incorrectly assembled parts (even though this one is quite rare luckily), underpowered stock electronics (I am looking at you, Arrma 8S rigs), crappy Servos and worst of all: RED F****** LOCTITE EVERYWHERE.

It’s massive! (That’s what she said). I can’t wait to see this thing ripp!

Hmmm, maybe a savage 4.6 purple, some orange, Black and white with a hint of blue somewhere. Could possibly do the same color but in reverse. I think I'm going to get one, always wanted to but afford the price. The kit definitely makes it doable! Thanks Matt for the video and thanks HPI for the rerelease!

Pro Tip. Buy some PJ1 Fork Oil for the shocks. It's probably about 25.00 for a liter bottle up there in Canookistan. 15w was what we found to be very versatile all-around back when they were big the 1st time around.

My favorite liveries are always the simple ones, the Gulf GT40 Nascar schemes from the late 80s/early 90s etc. Colors that pop but aren't so busy.

Cool build, I'm thinking buying one of these SBK Flux kits in the next few years after i do a Losi 5T 2.0 in 2025. I think i might build one similar to yours A Castle XLX2 with 2028 800KV system but mine will have a radiolink radio system and AGFRC Servo. Keep up the good content SBG.

Matt This car/size isn't something I'm into however I do appreciate what it is and the effort involved. I'm glad you do project's like this as it shows the wide space RC has to offer. Like button engaged. Cheers!!!

WOW, Outstanding build; now I want one, and I barely got my Vanquish VS4-10 Phoenix Portal. It's still in the box cause I just decided what motor I’m going to put in it, and it's on order now, LOL; I still would like to see a 4-wheel steer Vanquish if possible. Thanks in advance /Joe

This is at the top of my list after I get an SCX6, just such an awesome machine. For the livery, the obvious option is to do an homage to the original release of some sort. I'm not nearly creative enough to come up with anything more than that though.

The Baja 5b SS was the orange kit version sold a year or so after the release of the purple rtr. It came with everything needed except for a radio system.

Its good to see hpi cash back in on thier own design. Now i dont have to keep buying knock off bajas. Hpi updated the rear axles and rear hubs. Steering servo saver needs upgraded then steering is great. I went with symmetrical steering kit but turtle racing steering is also good if you want to keep stock look

Building is definitely better! I wish FMS sold kits on their small scale cars, for example.

I think the 2006 Paris Dakar winning Mitsubishi ralliart paint scheme would be a good inspiration! Same year as the original release of the 5b, (I think..) And buggies and sand and desert racing.. I dont know! Sounded like a good idea in my head at least!

As for where to put it, I would put a bracket on the wall by the SBG logo so it will be on display over your left shoulder during videos.

A big rc project! How about classic Nineties colours? Like they have on the New Retro Wave music channel. Neon yellow, pink, fluorescent green. Thank you kindly for the video.

Fond memories of my 5th scale days but I won't be getting another one. Very easy to break and spent more time fixing and upgrading parts than running.

Well looks like now I need to place a DDM order.. got two ss kits from way back. Hpi. Please…conversion kit and bodies rat rod and a tubd Nova SS, anything. own the space. They have been the funnest LS I’ve ever run.

Yo SBG, I'm having a dejavu on that metal vs plastic motor plate. Looking at the instructions again it looks correct in the video and looking at mine I don't see what you were saying here? Looks like the bolt pattern wouldn't work with the Flux mount? Basically I'm semi worried I mist something?

An HPI Uno motor livery (mid 80s?) might be cool.

Kits have always been my favorite. how many times did you find yourself having to stand up to do the build? nice work on the video as always..

Is there a way to find an online guide to where it will help me to assemble the front end on my older version that the previous owner upgraded but didn't finish assembling it before he sold it to me? The front-end, to me anyway, seems challenging to get started on properly...lol. Thanks in advance.

i agree buildding is best. But sadly not many weekend bashers are sold as kits..

I would of said ww2 bomber style body but it doesn’t fit the re-re theme so I’ll go for the reverse colour scheme of the original (yellow top, orange bottom white/green striping) Glad some handy tools are included though

What if you did the original colors but rusted it up a bit? Just a thought

The romance music tho!

The problem with gas is the Nitro Ethanol mix. You let the gas sit on the shelf ant the ethanol slowly evaporates messing up the oil to gas ratio. If they sold them separately allowing you to mix them when you use them. It will fix that problem. It wont fix the exap problem. Maybe there's a container out there that can keep ethanol from evaporation? If this wasn't a problem. I prefer gas to electric. Gas has more things to play with.

Hello SBG! I'm getting back into the hobby, and i've got one of these kits on the way. I've been trying to order the rest of the items I need to complete it, but I'm having a hard time finding a pair of batteries that will fit into the case dimentions listed in the manual (84x47x200). Do you recommend any specific ones? All of the ones I've looked at (greater than a 5-6k capacity) see to be a few millimeters too large. Is there any wiggle room with the measurements listen in the manual, or is that a hard-limit?
