And how uniformly civil and civilized they were. How genial, how pleasant and considerate they were to each other. How beautifully, but naturally they spoke, and how much they seemed to enjoy each other's company, sharing so many smiles and pleasantries of all kinds...It was an uplifting experience being able to enjoy their company for a brief but happy time each week.

Sadly we don't make them like that anymore. He had that wonderful combination of reliability, if he said it, you know he meant it, morality and fairness, masculinity and talent and was quintessentially all American. Qualities difficult to find embodied in the same quantities in one person these days. We will never see another like him.

I am a fan of John Wayne and also conservative as well and a lot of that malarkey about JW was nothing more than slanderous garbage posing as a valid opinion, especially from that angry hypocrit John Lennon who took out his anger on others because of a significant loss of a family member early in his life.

My favorite John Wayne movie was "The Shootist", I also liked "Brannigan". Also my favorite trivia about JW, was when he first got into movies he met Wyatt Earp, when W. E was a technical consultant on the movie sets.😮 Wyatt Earp died in January 1929, a couple of months before his 81rst birthday, J.W. first started in movies in 1926 when he was 19.

'The Alamo' had been premiered in San Antonio three weeks before this episode of WML aired. The picture was doing well but was so costly that it did not break even until sold for a TV screening in 1971. Wayne part-financed it and assumed huge debts, taking out loans secured on his properties and personal assets. The stress of making it increased his consumption of cigarets from 60 to 100 a day, though his cancer may have already been contracted when he filmed 'The Conqueror' in a desert area prone to fallout from H-bomb tests.

The warmth between them appears genuine and the wit and humour on display is a delight. The author of the book had John Wayne in mind as a model for Rooster Cogburn as a sort of lampoon of the charactors the Duke played. As good of an actor as Jeff Bridges is, John Wayne was better in this part. He loved lampooning himself and he deserved that Oscar. For me he will always be Rooster Cogburn, just like Colin Firth will always be Mr. Darcy.
