    I think Hal improves over time during his times on this show. Either that, or you just get used to him. I was young back then and we weren't normally offended by the "sexist" type comments by men. It was supposed to be complimentary and flattering. Attitudes have decidedly changed since then---even mine, not that I hear whistles and sexual comments anymore, myself. Alas! No one has the audacity to offend me anymore!

Around the time of this show (1952) and into 1953, the US experienced an outbreak of 93,000 polio cases with deaths numbering 4,600 - just in those two years. 2,996 people died in the September 11 attacks to put it into perspective. This is a very early show when they still had the "free guesses" and what has become called the "Walk of Shame". In some of those, a panelist would even ask to see the label in a woman's dress. Or ask a woman to turn around and such. The free guesses were almost always useless, corny, and often a panelist trying to be funny and not successfully. They eventually dropped the free guesses and John Daly in a very perfunctory manner said something like, "We're going to do things a little differently tonight and not have the free guesses" and he moved on and that was that. Never again. With those two things gone, the show was then 100% class.

    Watching these early WML episodes, I miss the practice of the contestants meeting the panel members at the conclusion of their game (which was later adopted). It's interesting to see the people being acknowledged by the panel and their brief interaction. On the other hand, I like the fact that the show later removed the practice of allowing free guesses by the panel. I felt that was a waste of time and provided little entertainment value.

    Another mistake by Mr. Daly. He allowed Ms. 'Drives Garbage Truck' to lead the panel astray thinking her line deals in a product. Driving a garbage truck provides a _service_ to those for whom she picks up garbage. Therefore, the act of picking up garbage and disposing of it is firmly a service, not a product. Yes, her garbage service does handle many different types of products (including food) when disposing of said garbage, but the products themselves being disposed of are not her line. In this show's defense, I know this was early into the run of this series (2 years), so Mr. Daly may not have been nearly as fastidious as he would later become farther into the run of this series.

  • @WhatsMyLine

    There were garbage truck drivers on WML many times, and every single time, they were considered to deal in a product. I will grant you that this case is a LOT more questionable than the example you pointed to in another video, the person who tested razor blades. "Product" DOES tend to imply something useful or desirable, rather than garbage, which is pretty much the exact opposite. But. . . in the case of garbage collectors, I think you have to bear in mind that this was intended to be an entertaining program first and foremost. The fun to be had by misleading the panel into asking absurd questions about garbage was far more important than being as technically precise as possible. These garbage collector segments never fail to be a hoot, and always because of the panelists asking things they wouldn't have asked if they weren't thinking in terms of a product. But yes, I have to agree this is one case where the terms they established on the show itself were being stretched pretty thin.

    +Brian Wright Product is literally anything that is produced. People produce garbage. The connotation of a "product" being a desirable thing that people go out and purchase/want should NOT be assumed for the purposes of this show.

  • @ToddSF

    @ToddSF

    More of a "waste product" than a regular "product". Not exactly a by-product, but "by-product" would be closer to what garbage is than just "product". Still, in the WML "terms of reference", garbage is a specifically identifiable thing without which a garbage truck driver would not be in business, hence a "product" for want of a better WML term of reference.

  • @brianwright657

    @brianwright657

    The act of driving garbage from point A to B is clearly a service, not a product. A product means producing something tangible that you can hold and touch. You can't hold _driving a garbage truck_ in your hand any more than you can hold _razor blade testing_ in your hand. Yes, you can hold garbage in your hand and you can hold a razor in your hand, but the acts of _driving_ and _testing_ are not tangible products. These are services. Therefore, a garbage truck driver deals in the act of driving. Therefore, razor blade testing deals in the act of testing. Performing an act of any kind is always considered a service because it is not tangible.

  • @ToddSF

    @ToddSF

    8 жыл бұрын

    Brian Wright -- Very often the question is asked on WML "Is there a product associated with your service?" I think that's what was asked here, and garbage is the tangible, physical thing that is without question associated with the service of driving a garbage truck. Without garbage, driving a garbage truck would be pointless. The question for me is, "Can garbage really be described as a product?" There's no doubt in my mind that "Is there a product associated with your service?" is a legitimate question, and in cases where the answer is "yes", discerning the product is a good way of getting to the service.

    ¶ I had thought the episode of "What's My Line?" with "Francis the Talking Mule" as Mystery Guest was among those presumed "lost" (no kinescope filmed), as is the episode of December 24. 1950 with Santa Claus as a Mystery Guest. It is nice to see the "Francis" appearance on "What's My Line?" is not lost to the ages. ~ ¶ It was too bad "What's My Line?" producer Gil Fates could not also have arranged for actor Chill Wills (the voice of "Francis" in six of Universal-International's seven films in the "Francis" series) to have appeared on the program as well; with Wills, of course, disguising his voice, at least through most of the questioning segment. ~ ¶ I wonder if there is any chance some of the so-called "lost" episodes (from between 1950-52) of "What's My Line?" might still be unearthed one day? There is or was a person who maintains a library of actual network episodes (complete with sponsor advertisements) of "What's My Line?," ostensibly available by request to those with a close relative who appeared as a guest on the show. I had always wondered if this person who maintains network episodes of "What's My Line?" had any of the so-called "lost" episodes of the classic Goodson-Todman panel game show. As with most, if not all, classic television, it is better to watch episodes unedited and with original sponsor segments.
