    From everything I've seen I wouldn't be able to tolerate the heat and humidity, or being confined to air-conditioning. Not just in Mauritius but I Asia and Central America too. Thankfully I'd qualify for residency in many places as a Plan B if it were necessary to escape from North America if worse came to worse.

    Hi Anne. Great question! So far, I havent seen the fruit known as "ackee" in Mauritius, but I'm hesitant to rule it out as there are A LOT of the same fruits and vegetables here. They may even sometimes have slightly different names at times. In the video, I was referring to breadfruit and a fish that's available at local supermarkets here called " hake." Hopefully a local Mauritian will see this message and let us know if the fruit "ackee" is available in Mauritius. 👍🏽

    hey we've had the amazing ackee in the Caribbean which we loved! There's no ackee in Mauritius, as far as we know (being from Mauritius) unless someone has recently managed to grow it, there's lots of people into permaculture so who knows in future maybe :) @@expatsierra

    I am living in Mauritius , I am an African - American from New York City I tried to connect with you before . Now that I am here this is truly paradise for me . Virtually no crime or violence. Just laid back retirement. A place where you can just be in peace. But for Ray Ray and Pookie there are Lions and Bear that will eat you and all other Frat and Sorority Sister. Don't come here the snake are big very big. They are very strong and can break windows without hearing it . I just keep my gun cocked and ready !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Brad. If you're speaking in regards to the Premium Visa, you can apply as an employee of a non-mauritian company as long as they allow you to work remotely. You can also apply as a self-employed individual who works remotely. Both scenarios require proof of employment and pay studs/billing statements. Hope this helps!

    How walkable is Port Louis for older people? Is it very hilly like Caribbean islands? How about dealing with the high humidity and distance from friends and family? What is the center of the island where it's cooler?

  • @expatsierra

    @expatsierra

    2 ай бұрын

    Hello and thanks for tuning in 😊. Port Louis isn't very hilly however the sidewalks aren't always neatly paved which can be a bit daunting. There also are large gaps/canals between the streets and the sidewalks. I'm assuming that this is to help for flooding but I'm not 100% sure. You should also keep in mind that many areas in Mauritius do not have sidewalks but Port Louis seems to be the main exception in this case. Port Louis also tends to be *very* hot and humid and is next to a pier. In the US and Canada you tend to feel cool temps when you move close to a body of water but its the opposite in Mauritius. Being close to a beach or pier will feel hotter and more humid. Curepipe is in the center of the island and tends to be one of the coolest locations in terms of temps. Distance from friends and family can be a challenge but I guess it also depends on the individual. Frequent usage of Whatsapp and other messaging services can be helpful.

    Hey there 👋🏽. It's great to hear from you 😊. Currently, 45 Mauritian Rupees equals $1. Mauritius is very affordable when you have USD, but it can get pricey depending on how lavish your trip will be. Overall, there's some wiggle room for varied budgets. I can definitely see you becoming an expat in an island abroad and it's great that you've already been to DR and tested it out. I'd love to host you and catch up. Thanks for the follow. 🥰

    This was my first year in Mauritius and my first time experiencing cyclones. I've observed that some just bring steady rain and moderate winds while others can be very scary. Cyclone Belal has been the most catastrophic this season and it wreaked a lot of havoc when it passed through. For me, it was like seeing something from a movie...it was very surreal. To prepare, the weather authority will classify the intensity of the storm from 1-5. 1-2 is when you should buy your provisions. 3-5 is when places start to shut down and soon everyone will be mandated to stay at home.
