Hello Kat, I'm a massage therapist. I can't pay the bills with that alone. So,I'm registering for phlebotomy class. My main concern is job availability. Massage therapy is extremely cut throat where I live. I need a stable career that I can move forward with if I choose to later on. (I thought nursing might be something for me later.) How is the job availability for you? Good? Great? Better than great? :) It's got to be better than massage! It's nice & all,but it is very hard to make it where I live. My class begins Nov 9. I'm doing this. I'm just a lil scared.

It is a great job but it requires a slight technique to find the vein correctly. However it is important to calm the patient and draw the blood well. Most Phebotomists are professional and get the veins properly. People with Adepose tissue are a challenge. Alcohol and gloves are mandatory. Most Lab Technicians understand that many Patients are scared of needles. We deal with it all the time since 2015 and 2016.

I am a bit nervous, personally I am weirdly fascinated with needles and having bloodwork never bothers me as a patient but my nervousness is concern over hurting patients and being able to do my job well enough to ensure they wont be too afraid. Since most people here are commenting on the positive aspects of phlebotomy, I'll mention the negative things. First, phlebotomy is paid pretty poorly compared to other jobs in the healthcare field, you have no decision-making power, you're easily replaceable, and there is very little room for advancement. It's also getting harder to find a job because many hospitals are beginning to train their nurses to draw blood instead. The skill set you use is also very narrow compared to other health professions and has very little marketability outside its niche. Because of this there isn't much to learn after the first couple of months of work, and the job gets very repetitive and boring. On top of these things it's a job where no one is ever happy to see you, you have a high chance of being exposed to infectious diseases, you work on your feet all day, and it's bad for your back, knees, and circadian rhythm. In addition, from my personal experience the average education level among phlebotomists is quite low, as is the level of respect they get from professional workers, and many seem to be ignorant and dramatic people. Overall, phlebotomy is a good short-term job for people trying to get into medical, nursing, or graduate schools, but it lives up to its reputation as a stepping-stone job and these things make it a poor career choice.

Very true! I'm working as a phlebotomist while being a full-time student. I made a mistake choosing phlebotomy as I really don't like it at all. Phlebotomists are not very respected in hospital.

That's why I am confused as to why phlebotomy jobs act like this is a serious career path. This should be a job that you get a license for and can pick up work quickly.

I wish I had a way to send this video to the rude a$$ lady that drew my blood yesterday at Labcorp, in the pavilion 1 building adjacent to Charleton Methodist Hospital. She was abrupt and put out about me being there.
