What's Inside This $4000 Alienware Gaming Laptop From 2006?

Ғылым және технология

Do you have $4000 to spend on a gaming laptop? Neither do I! But thanks to the power of time you could pick up this once flagship machine for what is, well actually, still too much money...
Let's see what sort of antiquities this time capsule is hiding.
Model: Alienware Aurora M9700

Passed through 98 to 10, using every single one. 98, ME, XP with every service pack, Vista, 7 just when it came out, 8, 8.1 and updated to 10 as soon as it was released. My first time with a PC was at 3 back in 2001. Later, I tested 95 for curiosity.

WTF and they sold it 4 weeks later for 650€ to someone who wanted to play the sims... welcome to france.. say it has a i7 and asus rog they will buy and dont understand its old and wont game... but hey we were laughing and happy for him that he god that much for it and that the shop sold it with in 1 month was ever stranger... but its often like that people buy at he pawn shop more for double price then on facebook / local craigslist... my lg g3 nobody wanted to buy it for 130€ i went ot the pawn shop they would give me 100€... so i kept it ended up selling it local at 100€... how does the pawn shop make profit on something i couldnt sell for more then 100€ but they would take for 100€ and so resell it for atleast 150€..... but they know there clients... people like to see the item in a shop in france.... 'better quality' more expensive is better it there motto...

Thats why gaming on laptops suck, even if the cpu could support both gpu's it would either overheat so much that you could cook an egg on it or come up with some other bs that would make you regret paying 4 grand for it. I remember how they used to put desktop CPUs into a laptop so they crushed all competition but even just browsing the web you got under 2 hours of battery life. Gaming it was just a requirement to be plugged in. I wanted one so bad for a LAN rig but a Shuttle setup was so much more practical. I couldn't afford either so I lugged my heavy case and CRT monitor around instead.

It's been upgraded a bit over the years, and is currently sporting Core 2 Extreme x9000, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD + 1TB HD and GeForce 8800M GTX SLi. I bought it after a serious accident back in late 2007, because I couldn't sit normally at a desk for several months, and so I needed to be able to game with my legs up. It was my primary system for over two years. And was used frequently for a lot longer.

Topet Hernaez ...not really, as the RTX cards are EXTREMELY powerful and will be able to still play every SINGLE game 14 years from now with ray tracing disabled. Literally the only thing that will be lost is the ability to ray trace in a game 14 years from now on current laptop hardware, especially since RTX was made for the upcoming next gen games anyways. Meaning it will still be able to play games perfectly fine on at least medium settings 14 years from now with ray tracing disabled, just one single generation after this one coming up. Heck, they might even be able to run them with the lowest ray-tracing option enabled still. So no.

Knowing I could never afford that it still made me happy just building those gaming pcs on their website. Then I learned how fast PC technology goes out of style and if you wait just a year or two, that tech that was $5k would drop almost in half in that time. Good times.

For the record, there was also an Intel edition, called the 9750. That did have a dual core option, but it had a very strange Intel drawback. While the CPU could claim a 64bit address space, the chipset was limited to a 32bit address space. As such, it resulted in a strange scenario where it was possible to upgrade to 4GB of ram on a 64Bit machine, while still dealing with the 3.5GB limits associated with a 32bit OS.

The trick is to shop their lowest to mid-range model and never upgrade ram or storage. Also, use the outlet. Same warranty but considerable savings.

I had an Alienware M9700i-r1. My old man got it for me as a college gift in 2006. It cost $2500, and had an Intel T7200 and 1GB of ram (thought i upgraded to 3GB towards the end. It had the same Dual 256mb cards, though I have seen reports of support for a specific 512x2 configuration. Fun fact, you could get the screen upgraded to 1920x1200, and the CPU up to a T7600 at 2.3Ghz. I'm sure if you maxed the fuck out of it, it would have been pretty future-proofed till at least the 2010s.

I scored a 2013 Alienware laptop a few years back and gave it to my eldest stepson at the time as a b'day present. From memory it had an Ivy Bridge i7 and Nvidia 640M and ran pretty well. And it handled Crisis at 1080p medium settings at about 40fps too so it wasn't too bad although it did get quite hot thus requiring him to face his desk sideways to the ac to keep it cool enough to not throttle.
