What’s inside the Shanghai Marriage Market (ft. foreign friend searching for love)

Curious about Chinas largest Marriage Market, I am bringing a friend to experience it in real-time, where local Shanghainese revealed hidden aspects of its dynamics and matchmaking culture.
Beneath the surface, I reflected on how this market showcases many social issues in China, including a historically low birth rate, aging population, and segregation between urban Hu Kou and rural Hu Kou (city of residency).
Thank you for being a part of my journey :-) welcome to share any personal thoughts, experiences, and suggestions.

Comment below what interesting social issue / phenomenon you see from China or other countries! I want all of us to learn and spread new perspectives instead of speaking from cultural stereotypes. If you share this video to other friends/family who might be curious about China, I would also appreciate! 🎉

Such an eye opening video and wholesome video!🥰🥰 Well done Miranda! I've no idea the market existed, even though I visited Shanghai back in 2017. 😅😅 Keep up the good work, Miranda! You're an awesome vlogger with lots of potential! 加油!

Thnak you Ivan for the support! Apparently this market has been around for decades, but has gained more popularity due to the only-children born in the 80/90s growing up to be adults in recent years, so their patients are extra worried about them not getting married... Glad you liked the video!!

@@mirandawng You’re always welcome Miranda☺️☺️ oh wow! That’s absolutely incredible!!! I guess that’s the typical Chinese family mindset. Don’t stop making videos!!! I eagerly await your next video hehe. Until then please take care and may you have a good night ahead! 晚安!

In the US it's more like a faint glimmer of hope for grandchildren. I will say that there are MANY cultures here in the US and many of them value family above all else, so perhaps pockets of "guess who you're marrying!" do exist.

I'd be fascinated to see what happens when someone uses the agency to find a suitor for their son or daughter. Imagine bringing the suitor home and introducing them with, "This is who I picked out for you." The reactions would surely be interesting. I'm curious if it's usually the parents who hire the agency to find a match for their child or if the individuals themselves are the ones looking. Thank you for the video; interesting look on marriage in different parts of the world.

Thank you Miranda for sharing this unique experience. I could tell in your video that many gave you uncomfortable stares because you were filming. So I live in the U.S. In Michigan. I'm 70 years old, not working (basically living off of my social security and a small pension) and have an apartment. I was married for 34 years, we opted not to have children and unfortunately she passed away almost 2 years ago from illness. It has been such a strange life for me ever since. In a sense trying to rediscover who I am without her. I have friends from India living in the U.S. where family is very important to them and they seem very happy. In my neighborhood it is an interesting mix of people. Mostly keeping to themselves, mothers with children but no husband, women who are single living a "party/have fun" lifestyle, children living with grandparents. So curious. I really like you as a person. And appreciate what you try to share. Very different from my perspective. Stay blessed my friend. May you find that which you seek and may Joy find you.🤗❤

Thank you so much Mr. Leroy. I am sorry to hear about your loss of your beloved wife, and that's a beautiful story of you trying to 'rediscover yourself' and being so positive. I just checked out your channel too, and you seem like such a joyful person to be around with. Also interesting the hear about the Indian families having such diverse lifestyles in the US that make them happy, goes to prove that a good life takes many shapes and forms :-) have a blessed day! 😇

I was there for a summer internship in 2015, unless you are a chad or very wealthy, finding a wife in Shanghai is hard, the fertility rate in Shanghai is lower than South Korea.
