What's in Parenteral Nutrition?

Фильм және анимация

Learn more about what you would find in a bag of parenteral nutrition including details on custom vs. standard bags and macronutrient composition!
EDIT: Intravenous lipid emulsions
Thanks to the emailer who pointed out that not all lipids are the same for kcals/g!
When considering lipids, different %'s will contribute different kcals/gram. The correct values are as follows:
10% emulsions are 11 kcal/gram or 1.1 kcal/mL
20% emulsions (most commonly used) are 10 kcal/gram or 2 kcal/mL
30% emulsions (used for bulk compounding) are 10 kcals/gram
Note: while these values are common for most lipid products, not all products contain the same lipid and glycerol content. Information for specific lipid products can be found within the product's prescribing information.

This is great! I'm taking the CNSC exam in the fall and I have lots of enteral experience, but unfortunately a separate team does the TPN at the hospital I work in so I need to learn about TPN starting with the basics! Thank you for posting!

The video is very infromative! Do you have related videos on what can be added/ cannot be added into PN (particularly some meds that are incompatible with PN)? Thank you.

I would say that for the lipids is 9 kcal/g.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. The 9 kcal/g is only an accurate estimate for fats being consumed orally/enterally. With lipid emulsions (used in parenteral nutrition) there is addition of glycerol (added for tonicity) and egg phospholipid emulsifier which contributes additional calories. So in the case of PN, there will not be 9 kcal/g, but rather 10 kcal/g in most cases. We also have a comment in the video description about situations in which it may be 11 kcals/g. Hope that helps!

While we are starting with adult nutrition support, we do have plans for neonatal nutrition support videos in the future!
