Such a comprehensive kit, well thought out. I never thought to bring a box end wrench, I’ll bring a couple of multi tools but nothing beats a wrench of the proper size to get the job done👍🍻

Thanks, the wrench is one of those things that could stay behind but if I ever need it it will be much better than struggling with a multi-tool.

Have to admit that I don’t have a kit like this in my gear. I definitely need to put one together, especially for long solo trips or epic adventures where it could ruin your entire plans. Thanks Kevin.

Hopefully this gives you a few ideas. This is likely a little more than what is absolutely needed. Think about a canoe with a hole, a tent with a hole, a sleeping pad with a hole and a stove that won't work. That's probably 99% of the problems you will have.

I like that Flex tape idea, I'll be adding that to my kit.

Yeah, I think the waterproof tapes that are available now are probably just as reliable as epoxy or glues and are certainly much easier to use, especially in the backcountry.

Very comprehensive! Also great idea for the waterproof container. We usually stash our bits in various pockets. Love it all together! Thanks Kevin.

Kevin, Your repair kit looks very similar to mine. I have JB Waterweld in my kit. I actually needed to use it once for a severe crack in the hull of my canoe which happened while on a trip. I doubled up the epoxy fix with duct tape. I would have needed to call for rescue if I didn’t have a well stocked repair kit. I think you should keep a tube of Waterweld in your kit. This video is a great topic and very important for anyone canoeing the backcountry.

I have found dental floss is excellent for stitching up all sorts of things in the field. I have even used it to stitch together leather. Webbing also works well to patch over holes and tears and to reinforce stress points.

Well thought out kit. I have a few things to add to mine now. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comment. I have used about 75% of these items in the past and have been glad I had them. The other 25% make me feel safer. :)

excellent and well thought out Kevin!! I have many similar items and feel 'better' having it on hand to MacGyver something the best I can (I pack my stitch kit in a small metal mint container and swapped out my thread for a small hank of braided fishing line) thanks for taking the time to put this together !!

Yeah, I think you nailed it. You want to bring the right stuff to effectively "MacGyver" something very effectively but you don't want to bring all the heavy tools you might have at home.

I would not be without superglue in my first aid kit. Seal cuts , and they heal faster and better looking.

Thanks Barley Tone, they aren't terribly hard to put together. I recommend just putting together a simple kit and then let it evolve naturally by adding or subtracting each year.

I like to take zip ties, Gorilla tape or duct tape, with me.

I enjoyed this video, thank you for sharing... I've made a note to add a little bit of webbing to my kit for replacing backpack straps, and I've actually got a set of shears on the way already, I figured they'd be good for my med kit but also great for repairs. Something I always bring canoeing is a couple of nails with my wire... I can use a stove or a lighter or just a fire to heat up the nail, gripping it in my Leatherman pliers, and pushing it through, melting holes, through webbing, plastic canoe materials, even through wood, etc... That way I can 'sew' a major break in plastic, either with wire, or with some kevlar thread or SpiderWire braid fishing line. Finally, I bring a Speedy Stitcher sewing awl sometimes, because it sure makes sewing kit a lot easer. If you haven't tried one, I do recommend them. Although if you use your SAK's or multi-tool's awl (with a hole in it, either from the manufacturer, or drilled by yourself), that works too. And a question - where did you get that kit container? I'm in Toronto, perhaps there's somewhere nearby I could grab a similar one...

Thanks for the tips. Yes a stitching awl is common in a lot of kits and could be a good addition. I have used the awl on my SAK many times. The container was a challenge to find. The Flex Tape (and all other similar brands) come in a very wide roll. This is a 'Betty Crocker" container that I found in a dollar store. I searched many stores to find a container wide enough. Good luck.
