when the time comes and you do get a new laptop most everything is moving to usb c but you can buy cords specifically for external drives that connect it to usbc so you dont have to use a dongle. theyre small and i lose them too lol. got one for my external drive so i could edit videos on my ipad wich is only usb c. works great
