WITB videos are some of my favorite golf content to consume and yours did not disappoint. I'm always so curious about other golfer's thoughts behind their bag makeup and extremely interested in the small knickknacks often forgotten about. Great video as always. I honestly thought that Waddaplaya putter was a customized Scotty of some sort.

Great video because: 1) I am ~71 2) Have multiple surgeries 3) Owned variety of brand clubs 4) I too have evolved 5) Finally, besides my driver, I now play one ( 1 ) fairway wood, two ( 2 ) hybrids with remaining forged Japanese irons ending with a 62 wedge. Number one #1 goal: Stay in the fairway applying course management with " NO " hero shots. Really enjoyed your viewpoints. Thx. BTW: It would have been interesting if you showed the loft degrees on your irons. ie: What is the loft of your six ( 6 ) iron.

Putter is most definitely the club you need to be most comfortable with. I made a drastic change to my putter this year. I went face on/sidesaddle and bought a LAB golf broomstick to do it with. The change has been very beneficial for me. Not only can I practice longer due to differences in posture at address, but my make percentages have gone way up during practice.

I'll agree to the blade statement. I lost at least a year second guessing myself when I bought my set, because the old reviews were nothing short of a warning to know what you're getting into. My clubs are older, Cobra Amp Cell pros, and since getting them I have had my best games ever. Find what you like, you will learn them.

Good stuff, always love to hear and see what goes thru players minds when picking clubs for their bags. I’m a bit of a club junkie so I have four sets of irons, Callaway X Forged CB’s with $Taper 120 stiff at 2° flat & 0.75 inches short, Titleist T100S Nippon NS Pro Reg flex standard lie & loft (never use them), Titleist T300 Tensei AM2 Red Reg flex 2° flat standard length (winter clubs) AND an old set of PING EYE 2’s Red Dot I had ping refinish for me (just as a collection piece). Those Callaway X Forged Clubs are the nicest feeling clubs I have personally ever hit in my life, love those things!!! I was a member at Gorge Vale in Victoria when we lived there, I always had a more forgiving stronger lofted winter clubs with the mucky conditions and heavy air. I also have eight putters….😂

Great video! I grew up only playing a few times per year and I had a couple sets of freebee clubs. Up until just recently I had an old set of Dave Pelz Featherlight blades, but I found some cavity back irons and hybrids at goodwill and have pretty much replaced every club in my bag now. I don't play enough at the moment to really justify buying new or gently used clubs right now, but eventually I would like to get fitted and get some nice clubs. For now I've been trying to experment and find what works best for me with used clubs. Right now I have driver, 2-5 hybrid, 6-p irons, 52,56,60 wedges, and an old school putter with a newer extra thick grip. This has been my favorite set up so far. I like that your willing to experiment and try all different brands.

I’ll have to respectfully argue that static loft is not all there is to forgiveness in Irons. The heel-toe weighting for example is huge if you often miss out on the toe. On a Blade, those are going nowhere. If it was just static lofts that contribute to forgiveness, then length is the only factor making a 5 iron blade more difficult to play than a similarly lofted 7 iron GI. You are correct that if you are a high swing player, there is an argument to be made that you should play a more player’s oriented iron than your ball striking skill may suggest. And, thanks for the WITB!

I can hit my irons pretty well, and have enough speed to hit high and long... but struggle chipping and my putting is weak (at best). Nice! Very cool grips I am tempted, seems wild that leather is good in rain!? I’m in Vancouver too. I went the one length route to experiment (cobra forged tec ). I don’t need the distance at all from hollow bodies but it’s the most “gamer” of the standard one length irons. Hit them very solid and it’s nice to have a 4 iron which feels as easy as an 8 iron to hit. 2 iron driving iron is my fav club.. but the putter I just can’t decide. I’ve had everything else in my bag fitted but the putter and I have about 10 of them in varying styles… I’ve tried claw, standard, left hand low etc… getting some lessons for putting before a fitting… curious how the waddaplaya putter actually is? I must be an anomaly. I bought a 4 & 5 hybrid when I started playing again, thinking I’m getting older, I haven’t played in years, I’m going to need the help. I hit them… ok. But it got to the point where my 6-iron was much more reliable and consistent. I’ve since added a 4 & 5 iron, and it’s really helped when I have a 200 yard shot that needed to be somewhat straight. I’ll keep putting in some work to get better with hybrids. I do find them easier to get out of the thick, wet rough. But right now, I’ll take a 4-iron off the tee or fairway over a hybrid any day. 🤷

I might have miscounted but I think you only mentioned 13 clubs, right? If you were to fill that 14th spot, what would you go with? I think this tends to be a fun question for someone whose gaps are covered. Lots of stuff you could consider, based on your needs - a chipper, a second driver set up for the opposite of your usual shot shape, a high-lofted fairway wood, etc., just something to address whatever hole you might have in the bag that isn’t strictly focused on gapping. Anyway, just was curious what you’d add. Figured a 5 iron or 5 hybrid might be the natural choice but if you can get a smooth 170 out of that 4 hybrid, probably no need for one?

Good video with lots of great info! I wish I knew more when I started playing a few years ago, but I'm at a point where I'm confident in my game. The only gripe I have is your thoughts on blades only being different than super GI clubs just because of lofts being weaker. They do perform different than club heads with a CG located lower and further back because of the difference in deflection at impact. The center of mass on a blade is basically right on the face, which tilts down more, creating more friction, thus giving lower launch and higher spin. If we're talking blades vs. small players cavity heads, then I would be inclined to agree with you there. I myself use a set of Taylormade P7MBs and I immediately noticed the difference in turf interaction/forgiveness, feel, as well as the launch being lower than a big headed iron. Even compared to my older set of Titleist DCI 96s, the ball flight was lower and divot depth and shape were very different. For reference, my 7 iron loft is 36°. To be fair, I've gone from the stock TT DG S300s in the Titleist irons into the PX 6.5s and then into X7s in my blades so the extra weight and MUCH stiffer tip section do play a role. The most notable difference was the shaft change from PX 6.5 to TT X7 which gives me a softer handle which isn't as harsh when I get steeper even with a perfect strike.

Thanks for the kind words! And yeah I think your point is fair - I probably overstated my point re: irons and forgiveness. A blade is definitely going to be far less forgiving than a SGI club. I guess I've gamed a few sets varying from super game improvement to cavity back clubs and found them to be a bit closer in terms of forgiveness than the marketing might have you believe. But indeed, blades are in a separate category.

  • @ThJR6

    @ThJR6

@@NotAScratchGolfer My bad, I think we might've been talking two different points. But I agree with what you're saying. A SGI vs. GI head isn't too much different, but both of those compared to a player's head is noticeable from my experience. I don't think blades and player's cavity heads are too different from each other; EX. Titleist MBs and CBS or Taylormade P7MBs and P7MCs mostly because of the small head size. Both have narrow soles, minimal offset, etc., weaker lofts, etc. Heel-toe forgiveness is definitely not as much as a bigger, harder head but we expect that haha. Really, it's about looks in the bag if I'll be honest. I went with the P7MBs over the P7MCs but only barely because I really like the look. I'm kind of a gearhead especially after doing a fitting as well as watching TXG's channel, now Club Champion. Funny enough, I've found my blades to be more forgiving through the turf with the narrow sole and even a thin, even necky strike isn't too bad. It hurts, but I don't randomly lose 100 yards. I remember doing my fitting a couple years ago and they used a board with multiple types of simulated lies and I saw all the numbers. My issue was always ballooning irons high right as a lefty golfer, so lower-launching heads that deflect more are very important for me. To add to your point, head profiles are often overemphasized and aren't the end-all-be-all. Like you said with driver, I I would also go as far to say the shaft bend profile is what fitters should do before giving someone heads. For example, I have a slow takeaway; with a very torque-ey swing and lots of rotation, neutral grip, and a flat wrist at the top. So something with a softer handle and stiffer tip is far better than the opposite. I don't like the club loading itself and I like extra weight as a bit of a crutch. Both the X7 and Nippon Modus 130X are 130+ grams, but they're totally different in profile. For different mechanics and deliveries, shafts make up about 90% of performance I'd say? And the other 10% is like what you're saying with the lofts on each head. Great video for newer players!

I've played all types of irons and tested them on my sim. My experience is game improvement irons are horrible with distance control. You can hit a players distance iron with jacked lofts and still get consistent distances if you make a reasonable strike. With GI irons you will get jumpers that go 25-40 yds further than you expect out of nowhere. Never experienced that with players or players distance iron (you may pure it and hit it 10 -15 yds further at most). Even with blades if you make decent contact you don't get jumpers like GI irons.

I used to play Mizuno blades for YEARS. Biggest caveat in my experience is you can lose 10/15 yards or more of distance on an off center strike where as "more forgiving clubs" will penalize you less for not flushing it every time.

Im really curious why you have an S flex driver shaft and regular graphite iron shafts cause I have a feeling I should do the same. Is the flex for spin and graphite to keep them light? My distances are exactly like yours but I have stiff irons and a regular driver, and trackman data says I should spin my driver less and irons more 😂 so I feel like I should switch flexes to your setup.

The gist of it was that my driver swing speed hovered between 96-99, while my 7-iron swing speed was only in the low 70s. Said otherwise, I'm swinging my irons relatively slower than I should be able to extrapolating from my driver swing. I don't know shit from shinola though, so I'd suggest making this decision in consultation with a fitter.

$300?! That Bushnell is $700+. I know because I have one as well haha. It is great, although I don't use the elements function as playing out of Calgary the elevation is always too high. I guess in the new one (X3 I think) you can set your home elevation. Great video as always, Adam!

Cool putter and head covers. Hey why not use fairway woods instead of hybrids? And why did you go with low lofted 3w instead of higher lofted 5w for example? Personally i find 5w much easier to control and goes only a little shorter than 3w on my best hits... If i include mishits the difference in distance is even smaller

I'm looking to buy the AF66 putter. In your opinion, is the 69 degree lie angle much different from a 70? My current putter is 70 lie and 34 length. Wondering if i should consider a 33 length to ensure my eyes remain over the ball.

  • @NotAScratchGolfer

Hey Matt! With the caveat that I'm not a professional putter fitter, I'd hazard that the lie angle difference of 1° with the putter will be unnoticeable. As for length, I'd say it's a personal preference. I found myself always holding my 33" putter a bit lower and ultimately landed on 32". Probably easier to order it at your normal 34" and adjust if need be, in my opinion. Hope you enjoy the putter as much as I do!

Have you looked into the lie of your clubs, you have a very flat swing and your irons in particular look way to upright for you, im the opposite very tall and upright and had clubs adjusted accordingly and it made a world of difference in ball striking quality, anyways just a thought
