I'm inside the US, and don't understand what's going on at the border. It's exhausting to try to keep up with everything.

We hear about your border quite a bit. We have our own happening. They come in boats and when they see a British ship they know we are obliged by international laws at sea to help and that means bringing them to the UK It's not good

It's always great to see you trying to explain things in good faith as you do! I think it should be noted that immigration issues and enforcement are entirely within the purview of the federal government, not the states (as per long standing court decisions, as even the current right wing Supreme Court effectively recognized). Additionally, a state blocking federal agents is blatantly unconstitutional. Abbott is all about political stunts. Recently during the massive winter storm, Illinois' governor Pritzger sent Abbott a letter asking him to at least temporarily stop shipping immigrants and asylum seekers to Chicago on humanitarian grounds (which is itself a horrible use of human beings as pawns) to avoid people freezing to death; which letter was responded to by saying that the busing would continue unless the Biden administration secures the border. Of course, Illinois has nothing to do with federal immigration policy, so blackmailing Chicago over a federal policy for a political stunt at the expense of the physical suffering and safety of the asylum seekers (many coming from places like Venezuela) is despicable; the response also ignores the potential physical suffering of the people being bused; and the response implicitly recognizes that it is the federal government's jurisdiction to address immigration, not the states.

None of this would be an issue if the feds would do their job. 🤦

@@brianh.000 if that were true Mike Johnson would take Biden up on his offer to shut down the border. But that’s not going to happen.

What is Biden's offer? The (in progress) proposed bill? I have only seen some of the info from it, but it is not a practical solution (not the one that was being worked on a few days ago). Hopefully congress can stop being buttheads and actually address the issue. A shiny band-aid won't fix a broken arm. 🤷‍♀️ If it is something other than that bill, I would be interested in looking it up. I haven't looked in a day or two, so if there is another proposal I haven't heard it.

Abbot's argument is. The federal government was only allowed any power over state borders if they used it to defend that state, but Texas kept the right to do it itself if the federal government was failing in the eyes of Texas So he has the right and good for him for sticking to the law
