Gilbert sacrifices so much for his family..the frustrations of the family build on his shoulders. Gilbert can’t control himself when he hits Arnie because of that pressure. The girl, the cheating wife, the dead husband, the house, his mother, the cake, the bath. It’s crazy.

I can relate to Gilbert for hitting Arnie. I am mostly a good person, but I'm not perfect. I have gotten so angry that I lost control and took my aggression out on people who didn't deserve it. I regret those mistakes immediately, but I get so scared of the consequences that the only thing I want to do is run away...hoping I never have to face them again. But I realize eventually I have to. And I have to live with a long list of mistakes I made, and people I hurt...and I only hope that whatever I do from now on might be able to make it up to them.

I think Gilbert letting the kid peek at his mom was just a little passive aggression on his part. He'd sacrificed so much in his young life because she was incapacitated by her weight. He loved her, and wanted to protect her. But sometimes keeping that open secret just got to be too much and he was acting out. He's an awesome guy, awesome brother, awesome son, but still human. Darlene Cates who played the mama was a really great actress. She was also in this really weird movie that's sometimes called Wolf Girl and sometimes called BloodMoon. But it had Tim Curry and Grace Jones in it. P.S. Unrelated to this, I just saw Disenchanted yesterday. You're gonna love it!

My reaction to this movie was the same as yours. This movie shows what mental health diseases can do to a person and their family members. I grew up in a home similar to this. My mom was a single mother of 5 children. Her 1st husband passed away, leaving her with 4 small children. Four years later she married my father but he turned out to be an abuser. She didn't marry again until I was around 28 but that didn't last because she struggled for years with major depression. He didn't understand it, so he left her. People didn't have an understanding of how devastating mental health diseases can be back then. I'm glad you watched this.

Nick....EVERYONE is emotional with this movie, you do not have to feel apologetic at all! We understand, believe me! 🤣 You don't have to feel that way ever about ANY movie, but definitely not THIS one! I haven't seen this in years, it was really great revisiting it with you. PS: I'm with you: although I like him, I'm not always knocked out by Leo (I find him miscast in most of his Scorsese collabs) but I 'll be the first to say that he can be truly fantastic. Definitely his two Tarantino movies, definitely Revolutionary Road, and DEFINITELY these early movies, like "This Boy's Life" (amazing, with De Niro) and definitely THIS movie. He's incredible in this one. ("Marvin's Room", also, which came out in '96 and has an incredible cast).

41:33 Oft times when morbidly obese people die in their homes, it has happened in the past that walls are removed, picture windows are removed and cranes used as their weight exceeds limits of normal and safe capacity of either medical equipment or human strength. The officer on the radio that mentioned calling in the National Guard wasn't being rude, it was just poor timing that the family heard it. The National Guard would have a crane or equipment that would be better suited for the removal of the body more than some podunk country town that's got nothing but a handful of cops and no heavy equipment. Doing these things isn't to shame or embarrass the deceased or the family but is merely a matter of physics. That is why Gilbert and his sisters burned the house down. Their mother was still in the house upstairs in the bed. Rather than their final moment with her be a spectacle for the neighbors to watch while they extricate her from the house for everyone and maybe even the News to see, they chose to burn it down as a funeral pyre and spare themselves and their mother's memory the embarrassment.

At least knowing in advance gave them the opportunity to take care of their Momma on their own terms.

You weren't going to get much out of Gilbert because he found it hard to get into a relationship as far as the love story goes. He found himself with the married woman because his family kept him from having real relationships. He gave his life for his family. And flipped his lid a few times. He deserved a beautiful soul like Becky. He burned the house to save his mother's dignity. The sisters were old enough tp go it alone together l, they all decided. I love your reaction. She told me about how she truly believed Leonardo Dicaprio had autism when this movie first came out. And when finding out he doesn't, she knew right then and there that he was gonna be an amazing actor in the long run. The ending is very bittersweet considering they burned down the house where their dead mother laid so that she wouldn't be a joke of the town if they were to have a crane get her out. Read the book! There is so much more to the story. One of my favorite films. Leo was 18, only got paid 75,000 for this part and didn't win the Oscar he so deserved. He is brilliant. To study for the film, he spent weeks with special needs children so he really could nail the part. Also, Johnny had to say many times in the movie how fat his mother was and that she was a whale and every time they would cut the scene he would go and apologize to her and tell her that he was so sorry that he had to say that. Such a sweet film. BTW- Johnny had to say many times in the movie how fat his mother was and that she was a whale and every time they would cut the scene he would go and apologize to her and tell her that he was so sorry that he had to say that. BTW- the oldest sister Amy got a job in De Moines, Iowa, and she took Ellen with her. ❤

Leo was incredible, I think they did show the sisters dynamic well.... the older one was like Johnny Dep, she had to cook all the food and take care of the mom, the younger one, was self centered, and disconnected. The older kids must have been with Mom when she was still somewhat of a parent, the two younger ones were raised by the two older kids.......

While I haven’t seen the fugitive and I do love Tommy lee jones, DiCaprio DEFINITELY deserved the Oscar for this role.

I was hoping you expressed what you thought of Leo’s acting in this movie at the end, but you seemed to enjoy the movie pretty well. I enjoyed your reaction as well.

I watched this as a teen and enjoyed it, I'm 43 now and have 2 autistic teens. Hits different now. I can say Leo acting is SPOT ON! He must have spent a lot of time, with kids with autism.

I discovered this movie at a time when I wasn't really mature enough to grasp just how emotionally heavy it truly was, but hopefully I can revisit it sometime For now I can enjoy it with one of my favorite reactors

You might like The Man In The Iron Mask. Leonardo DiCaprio is great in it. Other well known actors. (Not spoiler) Has the Musketeers in it.

I did not expect this video to happen. Also, I’m writing this right before I start watching the video. I hope it goes well, and it does just got to get a feel of emotions from this video, and I’m just going to say Leo is the best part of this film, including Depp movies are just emotional. That’s all I can say about it, so I can’t wait to see what you think about it and hope everything goes well.

20112022 A beautiful movie, and that in my opinion, and I know that also in which you read thiS message, EVERYONE should see at least once in a lifetime😥💓👏👏👏. Sadly, Leonardo Di-Caprio, despite the fact that he was nominated for his spectacular performance, did NOT win the Oscar in 1994, who won it was Tommy Lee Johns in The Fugitive in 1993. Leonardo, despite being young, IS A GREAT ACTOR and he managed to outshine to the protagonist in a very special way and memorable way!
