I like the craggy palette knife mountain. They just seem to have more interesting details
The ultimate deciding factor is that the knife is easier to clean.

@@michaelsullivan1262 If we talk about oil paints - you need to use toxic liquids to clean brushes. If you ok with it - it's great, but some people as me are too sensitive to chemicals and can't use them. So palette knife is an amazing solution :)

Lunar Ferns you can clean your brushes with baby oil or safflower oil works good to. Then I wash them in half and half water and Murphy’s oil soap. This is how I clean mine. No more toxic cleaners for me.
I like using the Palette knife when doing the highlights and shading in the mountains I paint. It gives it that rocky texture when adding more details to it.
Staggering the mountains like that really makes for nice shadows and visually pleasing.
Wether you realized it or not, you taught me the difference is distance. The brush makes for a distant mountain... I like it. Thanks for the video Kevin.

Knife mountains look closer and sharper, brush mountains look more distant and diffuse. I guess the deciding factor is the look you're going for. Nice job!
Excellent tutorial! Both mountains look great, but I prefer the palette knife version. It looks rockier. Nicer texture.
I gave up painting mountains with a palette knife a long time ago, I simply don't have the feel for it. Actually, I gave up painting mountains period, unless they're very distant with no detail. However you gave some good tips on using the brush that I hope to try at some point, thanks' Kevin.
I love the look pallet Knives give. I have beautiful Rooster done that way. It's so vibrant! Watching you paint is magical!
I for sure agree with the thought process that the brush allows for a more distant looking mountain, and the knife typically has sharper edges and looks closer. So for me, that is what I would typically lean on when deciding between the two.
I cannot decided because I love them both :) because you made them both beautiful in their own way ;)
thank you Kevin for doing this video. I see the differences in both. they're both beautiful! thank you for everything! you are truly amazing!
Given that you make everything look so easy, it's hard to say which is best in motion, the palette or brush. I like the palette mountain just a bit better. But they both have serious interest to them!!! Thank you, Kevin - always so entertaining!!
I am allways for brush. great video. big like from QuickArt channel

Beautiful
Your video's are my inspiration to want to paint and I found why I was struggling with the pallet knife mountains in this video, the paper towel. That was the answer. Thankyou so much.
Love using the palette knife for mountains!! Great comparison!!!
Loved this video Kevin ,I can't make a choice, they both have there own beauty
First I would just like to say, I know nothing about painting, but I do enjoy watching your videos. I couldn't tell you the difference between oil or acrylic paints. Having said that, to an untrained eye, I like the texture you get from the knife. I appears to jump off the canvas a little more than the brush. To me, it looks like learning to master the knife in painting would be a lot more difficult. I could be wrong as I have stated, I know nothing about painting. They are both beautiful, but the knife affect looks a little more realistic for me.

PL.K … I would say that you have a good eye for art.

PL K I think it completely depends on the perspective of the artist. Personally I feel that nothing looks more realistic than a skilled artist using brushes. On the other hand, as a new painter with no formal training, I can’t use brushes. I find the blending very difficult and with the way my mind works I need to work with textures (impasto) and layering. I bet that artists that tend towards realism probably gravitate towards brushes and away from the palette knife and vise versa for abstract artists.
Both awesome mountains. I find that I enjoy making the mountains with the brush because its more intimate...like you said it's almost like you place every rock, snowpatch, glacier, sunlight patch and shadow. It's a bit more personal and fun. I will say though using the knife is usually faster and sometimes letting the scene fall out of the knife (less control) actually gets you a better result as nature is random after all! Thanks for sharing!
Forgot to say, the palette knife is brilliant!
Wonderful video! I find that it depends on the mood I am trying to convey whether I use brush or knife! Thank you, Kevin...
Amazing work my friend, we can learn al lot from you...👏😊👍
I like the brush better. Like you mentioned there’s more control with it. I had an art teacher critiqued painting w a palette knife gives the painting a “frosting” effect
I like the brush painting, looks nice and smooth.
Great video!!! I agree with you, it depends on how much texture you want in your painting because both ways make an awesome mountain!!
I like both, but I love the palette knife technique. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful mountains kevin. I just start using brush for mountain .gives a different feeling in the Painting but I like both
Excellent tutorial! Thanks so much for the tip on too much paint on the mountain “block in”!! That’s been my biggest problem with the knife technique! (Maybe also with the brush!) Thanks also for the brush approach-gives an outstanding alternative!
Thanks, Kevin! Very helpful!
Awesome~ Amazing painting~ I'm watching your video with interest 👍👍👍💕💕💕
It’s amazing really, what you can do with both. Just a few strokes and your brain sees a mountain on a flat surface which you eyes want to look into.
With knife..mountains r looking like hard and so beautiful realistic. Wonderful work kevin sir. I like it very much
Very good, plase Kevin, more ocean lesson, tanks!
👍 Danke für das wunderschöne Video..👨🎨🎨😘👍
Please teach me the technique to make the double background just like you did at the start of the video. lol Thanks Kev.
Thank you. I'm horrible with the knife and have been looking for a good paint brush mountain.
Pallet knife gives better detailed texture every time. Love it.
i love the knife painting so easy and fun
I like painting mountains with a brush because the brush allows you to blend the snow as it disappears into the mist.
Really great👌
That’s amazing
Hi Kevin, I watched you and your inspiration motivated me to start back into painting, oils mostly with a acrylic mixed in. My channel tells more about me. Happy Painting!
both mountains are amazing....
Kevin, I like the brush painting slightly better than the palette knife one. The reason behind is in the inherent flexibility of the brush over the knife. You can do a dozen or more textures - deep or light depending on how hardly or softly you press your knife against the canvas. But with a brush you can literally paint hundreds of different textures and effects!! You can also use a hard brush, a soft brush , a very thin brush etc to create a wide variety of effects and textures!! The left side mountain range is somewhere I would like to spend my next vacation on. The right side one I would like to see on a post card!!😊😊
Using the knife has been so challenging for me
I love both I have been on the brush more lately though
Nice painting~:)
Nice love it
wonderful my dear
Wow, you are amazing.~ ^^
its interesting to see the difference. you could use the knife at first then detail with brushes after.
do you always start with the dark highlights, most of the instruction I've watched starts with the white, I'm struggling with the 3d look so I'm definitely going to try your method. thx
Oh,beautiful.
Pallete knife has better mountains 👍🏻❤️🙋🏻♀️
I admire him a lot and I want to learn more about painting and please translate me into Romanian
Mr Kelvin i like your painting very much But at the same time I want to know how to use brushes and knife (strokes) Will you tell me?????
Please do some more palatte knife landscapes. We just have two palatte knife landscapes in the whole list of your videos. This is a kind request. Love and blessings from India.
Both look great, just different techniques and also i think it is funnier to paint with knife!
Would a hybrid of a knife and brush work? Or is that stupid?
Estou nessa!!!!!
I like the brush 🖌️ mountains.
I know I'm against the consensus on this one, but I prefer the brush mountain. It looks more real to me. And I love the precision of the hints of snows. I wish my mountains looked like that!
Thank you Kevin👍I love your paintings. I just have a question, do you prime your canvas with gesso? Greetings from Germany😊

Wow Kevin
The blending brush is it wet or dry
Each as we all know have specific roles....especially knives. We can't use knife in small curvy areas of the subject or small people in a beach
Do it with both the knife and brushes, the best of both worlds maybe? Just a thought,
Knife mountains are quick and effective to create, but the paint is quite thick making it harder to to paint trees and other details over the top without muddying it up. I think one should strive to learn with both brush and knife.
What brushes do you use please?
I don’t think any one technique is best. I enjoy a blend of all the amazing artists I follow and their styles. I’ll say knife mountains and cabins have been a lifelong struggle to paint with a knife, not to say a brush is easier for me.
I think both are great. However, I've found for myself, that even though the knife creates more detail and texture, that texture brings the mountains too far forward in a painting.
How do you clean your brushes?
Were you buy oil paint from?
Good
Somthing that could probably help promote your channel would be to start doing community posts on your channel.
Skill Palette knife good detail 👍👍👍
Brushes gives you kinda further effect I think
Kevin, incridlebe!
the joy for knife
I really like the paint brush mountain but really want to lern to use the knife until it's as easy to use as a brush. I wish school kids could've had the paint knifes instead of just brushes etc etc..
What if you did the palette knife mountain then took a detail brush over it?
I been painting for years but my art looks too cartoonish and I want to grow as an artist. I googled acrylic and it’s talking about gels and glazes what’s that
Kevin, before you put brush to canvas, do you wet the canvas with anything?
@bio-plasmictoad5311

I know you didn't ask me it's more for watercolours but I suppose you could put some thinner on the canvas beforehand to help with blending.

Bio …. Thanks, but I know that water color uses water, but I've seen some artists cover the canvas with a liquid of some kind before starting an oil painting. I assumed it was turps, but not sure.

@@luigi5890 you are probably correct.
I like the brush rather than palette knife. Just because I haven’t learned to use the palette knife regularly. But palette knife is faster. I use Acrylic paints mostly, but am thinking about using oils with Acrylic for highlighting.

Catherine Greenup I wouldn’t recommend using oils and acrylic in one painting, unless you let the oils dry.
@catherinegreenup4608
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, Acrylic is water based and Oils are oil based of course. They wouldn’t mix. But I thought if the Acrylic was dry, might be able to use oils on top to highlight areas I’d like to look brighter. Acrylics go so much darker when dry it’s hard to get some things to shine out without using a few layers of Acrylic. I love the way Acrylic dries rapidly though and you can actually see your painting develop and take character whilst it dries. I’m an armature, very much still learning so probably not yet got the technique for highlighting.
Both are beautiful but the knife mountain looks more sharpness and crispy...
I find the palette knife painting gives the mountain more expression even though it is a touch harder to control.
Have you ever done portraits Kevin?

Less control as Kevin said is the key word for knife

Boa noite 🙏🏻🙏🙏🕊️🙏 abençoado por Deus q o senhor Jesus Cristo abençoe ok
The knife has it's advantages, however, the brush is the detail king and wins this matchup!
I vote brushes!
The Palette Knife Mountain Painting is DEFINITELY better than the Brush Mountain Painting.
Palatte knife mountains alaways have more texture.....which a real mountain also has....
I think it's the brush. Because you can paint into more details.
