    Too many variables. A perfect test would be to use 2 identical cars(or the same car) launching from identical locations, probably a dry spot in the road. Love the test though.

    I don't have any hard numbers or video to share but I've got a 2010 V6 AWD RAV4 with 3 peak A/T Yokohama Geolander G015 that I run 9 or 10 months a year. Then I switch to the Firestone Winterforce UV winter tires for real winter in January/February. For Fluffy or Slushy snow the A/T Yokohama do fine. When things get packed down and icy or just straight up icy are when the dedicated winter Winterforce tires start to show a significant traction advantage over the A/T tires. The softer rubber and more siping are what allows dedicated winter tires to "shine" when roads get icy and shiny. For reference I've driven through out Michigan and through Wisconsin to Upper Michigan. So even a budget winter tire is better when things get icy.

    Studless Snow and Ice tires (e.g. Blizzak) are the best for winter weather diving performance and safety in a mix of conditions. I have been running them since the mid-90's and highly recommend them. I have them mounted on winter wheels, so I can switch over to the most appropriate tires for the conditions. I usually swap out wheel and tire sets in the Fall and Spring. There is a bit of extra financial cost to this, but far less than those from a collision. The tire tread that connects your vehicle to the road is one of the most important parts. Stay safe, live long, and prosper.

    When I first moved to NH, I had a FWD Mitsubishi Diamanté. I put Nokian snow tires on it each winter and never had any trouble going or stopping. Since then, I’ve had AWD cars and I’ve used all season tires on them again without problems. I will say that I never let my tires get old so they always have good rubber and tread.

    I use a fully dedicated snow tire for winter driving. They are simply the best. Todays snow tires are far superior in performance. Especially in braking which is the most important factor. A very good set of snow tires cost about $800-1’000. They are worth every penny. One minor fender bender will cost at least that much. And in a traffic ticket, an accident report, and most likely an increase in auto insurance. A full set of dedicated snow tires is the safest for driving in winter conditions. Snow tires are so much better than any other tire type, that many countries “by law” require snow tires during the winter.

  • @cardo1111
    @cardo11112 жыл бұрын

    A dedicated winter tire like a Bridgestone Blizzak or Michelin X-Ice would make for a much better comparo. As honestly mentioned in vid the Cross Climate 2 is not a dedicated winter tire even though it has a mountain symbol, it's essentially an enhanced traction all-season tire. It lacks the softer rubber compound of a dedicated winter tire which would increase traction further reducing stopping distance.

    As you made somewhat clear from your mention of snow(ish) tires in the title, Michelin considers the tires you tested to be "all-season". They're reasonably good in snow for all-season tires, but they're still a big step down from dedicated snow tires. If you run the test with real snows vs. real all-seasons, there will be a significant difference, especially in the braking test.

    I have a 2016 Mini Countryman All4 S and a 2018 Hard Top Base. Both have highly rated snow tires for winter use here in the Buffalo NY area. We get 90 to 150 inches of snow each season, it comes in spurts. I had been driving the AWD car exclusively since 2016 and love how it handles in the snow. I had to leave a parking lot after more than a foot of fresh snow fell while at work. No problem. Just point where you want to go and press the gas pedal. It feels like a rally car. The traction control system allows for just a little bit of over steer if you "ask for it" with the throttle. This past winter I've been driving our new to us Hard Top with FWD. I was shocked that I barely missed AWD. I would NOT be able to pull my way though a foot of fresh snow with this car, but over all I've driven through a few pretty serious snow storms and was impressed with how good it handled over all. I don't live South of the city where are are a lot of steep hills. If you need to make it up hills, nothing beats AWD. For general driving, FWD with good snow tires will work perfectly for the vast majority of drivers. A fresh set of all season tires that are biased to All Season rather than performance will work OK, but as those get worn down a bit, that will get super scary. I am always amazed at how I can pull away from traffic lights even with the FWD car while vehicles around me are slipping trying to get moving. If you live in a pace that gets "real snow." Just spend the money on a 2nd set of rims and run real winter tires in winter and performance all seasons the remaining three seasons. If you live in a place that gets a little snow, then get an all season tires that is biased to all season and just stay home if a real serious storm hits. After most storms, the roads are fine within 24 hours, so just stay off the roads.

    I have a 2007 Jaguar XJ8 and while I don’t live somewhere that regularly sees a lot of snow as I live in Houston Texas, I do travel up north to visit family and friends who live in cold climates in the winter sometimes. That being Fort Collins Colorado and Bozeman Montana. Here in Houston I run Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4’s and when I knew I’d be traveling up to Montana around the end of January early February I bought some dedicated winter tires being Michelin X Ice Snow. Driving with the winter tires gave me incredible confidence considering how good they were. Drove to Cooke city from Bozeman through Yellowstone and back with my Jaguar with no problems at all as the car and tires preformed flawlessly. Eventually went to Fort Collins to visit family, and even when it dumped 12 inches of snow the first part of February I had no issues there either. Winter tires definitely make a big difference stopping and going in the winter conditions.

The Mini has an open front diff and uses brake traction control which cuts power. The VW basically has dual lockers with a front Quaife differential and a clutch pack torque transferring rear axle. This was like comparing 2WD Frontier on M/T's to a Gladiator Rubicon on stock stock tires on a mud/dirt track.

    The difference between Blizzaks and Continental A/S tires will be night in day in the snow. Your braking performance will be way better with Blizzaks. Also it's important to note that they are really "Winter tires" and not just "Snow tires" - if it gets really cold where you live, you'll have better braking performance with Blizzaks on dry pavement as well, as it uses a softer rubber compound. If you can swing the expense, I would definitely get some dedicated winter tires. If you don't want to buy another set of wheels, discount tire will flip them around for $80 each time. I didn't own my first set of winter tires until just a few years ago, and now looking back I can't believe how dumb that was. Driving in winter/snowy conditions is stressful enough, might as well do everything you can to have maximum control IMO.

    I cannot believe the backwards snow chain laws in many places… (Washington and Colorado both) they have chain zones for 2wd, then for 4wd… The rules make it so an AWD car on summer tires is considered more capable than a 2wd on snow tires… I cannot understand why those rules are still in-place.. it just further pushed people into needlessly buying awd cars when thy just go skiing twice a year. Oregon is a great example of what they should be - it makes the cutoff between who has to put on chains based on if you have snowflake-rated tires on..

    Back in the ‘90’s, I owned a few Accords and would get snow tires for winter driving. It was certainly better than the then not great all seasons, but once I bought my WRX wagon (in 2002), I would never go back to front wheel drive. Even on the stock all seasons, the benefit of being able to control the vehicle using both steering and acceleration is huge. This is true whether you’re talking snow or just about any traction challenged surface. Making the front wheels have to handle both turning and power delivery alone has always been a terrible design.

    I apricate the review on this topic since it has often been the conversation between me (FWD) and my son (Full Time AWD) talk about. I bought dedicated Micheline X-Ice Xi3 snow tires for my new FWD HEV two and half years ago since the stock Energy Saver A/S was only good at saving the the fuel to get a great MPG to meet the government requirement and not my life in wet or winter condition in Canada. I sold the stock tires at a good price while they were almost new to keep my options open. Before the end of last winter I discovered the All Weather tire and bought a set of CrossClimate 2 with the enhancement snow traction over the previous CrossClimate "Plus" version. Throughout spring, summer and fall the dry and wet road experience has been excellent on this set of tires. This winter season, after a few snow storms driving in unplowed 1 to 2 foot of wet snow/freezing rain up to 55 Miles (90Km) speed in temperature as low as -20 F (-30 C) at wind gust speed up to 37 mph (60Km/h) as well as many thick slushy conditions while living in a hilly area, the CrossClimate 2 has not yet given me any reason to swap out to its winter brothers the Xi3 tires which are still seating in my garage waiting for me to pickup the impact gun. A very capable set of tires that is night and day better than the stock tires in every condition (including MPG even though I feel more rolling resistance but fuel pump calculation does not make mistake ) and perhaps why it has the highest rating from both the Consumer Report as well as The Tire Rack. It's almost the end of February, so I think I will be safe to sell off the snow tires and keep buying these All Weather tires every three years as these model improves themselves. This way I will always have a set of tires with fresh and flexible compounds all year round instead of storing All Season and dedicated winter tires every 6 month and ends up with 6 years old summer/winter tires compounds that are less safe and pliable (and maybe the winter tires would only become as safe as a set of 3 years old All Weather tire compound?) on the road. For me, I would be saving the time and energy of swapping tires twice a year, money saved from buying extra rims, TPMS and installation fee (when I am to lazy to do it myself) and storage space for other tools (toys🤣) in the garage.

    This test is an interesting comparison, growing up in an area that gets around 18-40 feet (depending on elevation) and driving awd/4wd SUVs and trucks. Am now driving a small fwd in college; getting home has been a bit more of a challenge than I was used to. We only ran all seasons and never had a problem getting anywhere, even with 1-3 ft of snowfall in the roads, did switch to summer tires at one point, but eventually this was just easier. I think the main consideration that you have to make is how often you will be driving in the snow, sure good snow tires on a fwd drive may help, but it's no replacement for the convenience of awd, mainly in that the road conditions pretty much never have chain requirements for awd. And yeah, I can usually get where I'm going with the fwd on all seasons with chains, but it's certainly more of a pain, and would be completely unreasonable to use all winter in a place like that. My fwd drive just came with all seasons, and since I don't drive in snow much, and avoid it where possible, I won't ever replace with snow tires. You still have to put on chains to get over passes, and you still can't make it into most of the icy neighborhoods (which are all steep, mountains...) so it just doesn't really seem like snow tires on most fwd drive vehicles are worth it for most people, and if you're considering putting snow tires on because of where you live, well it give it a rough winter, you'll buy an awd, thats what all of the rich city folk do when the move, before deciding that snow's too much work and selling to the next rich family... Anyway, awd, even on all seasons, just feels like its so much more at home and the better tool for the job, at least for the conditions I'm used to; which is similar in amount, but usually heavier, wetter snow than Colorado, where these guys are.

For what you were trying to demonstrate with the tires really required more control with the varibles, including using the same car. It would have been better served using the same car and just switching out the tires or also use the front wheel drive version of the same car. We know people don't drive the same cars in the real world, but seeing as you were testing tires, you really didn't control for the biggest variable for the most acurratw result, the cars themselves.
