What's behind the UK's truck driver shortage? | Inside Story

It's not something you see every day in the UK: drivers waiting in long queues to fill their cars at the petrol station.
The government says panic buying is partly to blame for the pumps running dry.
Fuel companies blame a severe lack of tanker drivers to deliver the fuel.
The driver shortage has also left supermarket shelves empty.
Is Brexit to blame? And has the crisis exposed deeper trucking industry problems?

@You Tube what do you think happens when work visas are issued and endless welfare benefits are given to foreign families? Who do you think pays for their kids to be in public school. Even if they don't bring their families, that means they'll spend the minimum amount to live on and wire the rest home. Yes, if drivers are paid what they're worth, it'll get passed on to the consumer, but that's the way it is at any job.

When doing my (UK) HGV test, the examiner casually asked me if I had work lined up. I told him yes - driving skips around building sites. He was horrified. The examiner actually thought that long distance work (which includes overnight stays) was the best thing to do. I reminded him of the terrible working conditions that long distance drivers face. Who wouldn't rather be at home every night in their own bed, using their own shower, their own decent food..

Of course he thought it's the best thing to do, because that's from their perspective. But what they need to realize is that they need to pay people more for their time. It's not only about what the job entails that determines pay, but about what you could be doing other than the job. I feel a lot of "managers" don't seem to understand this, that people have lives outside of their job, or WANT to have lives outside of their job.

I still think the cost of gaining the HGV is ridiculous and is more than partly responsible for the shortages of drivers. The same way the “YTS scheme” caused a shortage of tradesmen back in the day. I see a heck of a lot of “older” HGV drivers on the road and there’s obviously not enough younger drivers coming through. A solution could be to give C1 drivers the class 2 licence and the class 2 drivers the class 1 licence after some training free of charge from the government surely that’s more cost effective than trying to entice foreign drivers with cash incentives

When will governments look at what is needed by the whole population of a country, so called social planning. We have recently been paying the price, insufficient doctors, nurses, dentist, police, lorry drivers teachers you could go on and on. All these professions need training of between 1 year to 5 years. These are all essential workers, without them, as we have seen, everything grinds to a halt. The pandemic was unexpected but the hospitals were short of staff before this hit. They refuse to have a decent minimum wage in place to actually cover the cost of living, especially now the cost of living is rising. I heard on the news that there are now more food banks in this country that McDonalds, yet Boris keeps on letting us know that this is the 6th wealthiest countries in the world.

So some companies paid the minimum wage which while this was considered enough to live on, which the government knew it wasn’t, so the low paid were given WTC, but this enabled some large companies to pay their share holders larger dividends by keeping wages low. So it was all tax payers who were subsidising the low paid we were also contributing towards higher dividends for the share holders. You didn´t let her explain about the cabotage issue. I understood from comments that that needs to be resolved too. You also cut Danny?? off at the end when he talked about improving certain working conditions drivers experience on the road. Safe parking lots, clean sanitary facilities, respect by their clients, their employers, the autorities. You will not get any drivers in the UK if that is not improved. Why would retired drivers come back? Why would EU drivers come back? Why would young people consider a job in that industry? You didn´t mention the future technological developments. Take out all the red tape and bureaucracy and allow the drivers to do their job without having to think of their immediate future 3 months later. There are companies that pay better, significantly better. Its a joke that tanker jobs out of west london are still at such low rate. Stress becuse people in this country have no regard for safety. You are delivering petrol and someone will come over eith a cigarette in their mouth to chat. Respect as the companies treat drivers like scum, often wanting loyalty from employee with nothing to offer in return, also there are double standards innthe industry, and people are overworked. I can't blame anybody not wanting become a trucker. 12 h shift is normal, 15 happens at least once a week. Forget the stories of seeing the world while you make money. All you gonna see is asphalt and traffic. If you tramp ijnthr continent, its not like you gonna have delivery to paris and you will tip it outside eiffel tower. You will go to paris sure, industrial estate 30 miles out of city centre, and no, you can't just go sight seeing on your brake, wheels dont spin, truck makes no money, you gotta keep moving. Best case scenario you will park up for the weekend near some touristy place, but trust me. Getting outside of industrial zone to say city centre ain't easy nor cheap, plus u r leaving ur truck behind that might get knicked, fuel stolen, cargo stolen- these are regular occurances. You also will not make friends, innfact you will destroy your relationships. You will destroy your health, long hours, late hours, no exercise, lots of coffee, bad diet. Here in the US we also have a massive driver shortage. Same story different country. The government here made it SO difficult to keep and maintain our haz mat endorsements 95% of us gave them up. Now it’s “we’re running out of gas!!!” A new driver here can make $40k a year for 70 legal hours of driving a week. That’s less than minimum wage. Then they quit. Countless hours wasted at docks, (mostly unpaid) no parking, constant harassment. Wonder why there’s a shortage?

All is about offer and demand, that's what capitalism stands on. So if there is shortage of drivers, wages will go higher and the higher goes the more driver will get back till the gap is closed. But question is, why the wages don't go up?? Answer is simple, greediness! I used to work on partime for take away shop, 7/h + 1 per order. I made around 10 pound net per hour. When I asked to get 1 pound hour more ( after several hour I gave them, they declined), owner was making around 3000pound a week net to his pocket!! He rather closed the shop for week than pay a 35 pound a week extra! You wanted Brexid so enjoy it! Perhaps all those Pakyistans, Indians and another can do driving jobs!

There is, by the way, definitively also a shortage of truck drivers in Germany, just not yet as bad as in England. My congratulations for having the guts to turn your back on the EU! The only thing wrong with the Brexit was the time. Should have done that 20 years earlier, before the EU had a chance to kill your local economy.

@@Zaak249 May I remind you, that the EU kind of persuaded the UK, even bribing them with special conditions like paying only half the normal contributions towards the community? On top of that the UK joined in when the EU still was a strong and tough Union of healthy economies, which made that a good and clever decision. I wanted to avoid this thread to run into a "versus the East" direction but unfortunately, the EU started going downhill thanks to integrating countries which had and, in my opinion, still don't have anything to do within the EU. There is no way lifting the economies of so many countries to the level that most of the members of the "original" EU once had. What was predictable and has happened is the sad fact that the rich countries have gone towards the level of the new members. There we might probably find another reason why wages for truck drivers are not half way what they should be like. If transport gets too expensive, how can the industry carry parts abroad and have them assembled in countries with wages and working conditions we would not even dream of here in our worst dreams. The EU government will always try to achieve one thing and that is keeping wages as low as possible. Mate, I was an owner driver and I can assure you that, after running a successful business for years I am happy these days, after my retirement, that I survived the last couple of years financially. Let me finally turn your coughs the right way, please: I am a man, sick of Europe. You can take that for granted.

Yeah people in the western world need to accept the fact that their daily goods and other stuff will and have to go up in prices because people nowadays don't want to be a lorry/truck driver because there are jobs out there with more money, more free time and less stress. I am german and a truck driver and here in Germany most companies won't/can't pay good money in the long distance sector, companies wont acknowledge that you offer your free time for the whole week if you work as a long distance driver... Most companies offer 2000-3000€ for long distance driver, which is a joke tbh. not to mention that we germans have a neighbour(Poland) wich don't have the € yet and are happy with a payment like that. I mean sure depending on the route you can have days were you only work 9 hours per day but you have to spend the rest of the day in your truck on a parking spot at the highway without access to a shower or a restaurant because all of the truckstops are already out of space. That's why I work as a short distance/city driver nowadays because I get a much better payment and be at home every day.

Once again the government have to step in to help the private sector. If a company wants to keep drivers, they need to offer them good pay and conditions. The only reason there are queues at the petrol pumps is because the public have panicked, even though supplies were getting to the pumps fine, before the media ran the scare stories of not enough delivery drivers.

  • @johnbee7729

I have my Class 1 license, but will not be driving anytime soon since I have zero interest in full time work. I am quite happy and willing to take one off trips but the system is not able to accommodate people like me. The shortage issue is not specific to petroleum delivery nor specific to lorry drivers nor specific to the UK. The western world lives via the consumer and we are consuming - A LOT. And other countries (China, India, Mexico, etc.) are also increasing their consumption. Consumption needs workers to produce and deliver goods. There just aren't enough workers to meet the demand of consumers. Shortages will exist as long as demand is high
