What's A GWS Home Game Actually Like?

Спорт

GWS is the lowest-attended AFL team in history - so I wondered what attending a game at the Sydney Showgrounds would be like...and I actually had fun, even if the Big Big Sound isn't as Big Big as the song made it out to be.
If you guys would be interested in some Orange Team merch or more GWS content, let me know in the comments, and thank you so much for the support you've given the channel, it really is very cool.

Seen plenty of cracking games at the Beanstalk. Highlights would be the first victory over the Swans in 2014 (lightning interupted game), first victory over Hawks in 2015, the final against the Dogs in 2016 (even though a loss), to name a few. It's a bloody great ground, always a good atmosphere, and you can snag a good seat most of the time.

I think oversaturation is an issue - a lot of teams and events to go to, at least compared to Adelaide. Plus NRL stadiums are tiny compared to the MCG and Optus Stadium, definitely hurts numbers.

I attended a couple of Swans games this year. Thursday night vs St Kilda (not a good drawcard plus a school night - 30,123) and then the Gold Coast Suns (again not a good drawcard - 33,911). So Swans games are well attended regardless. But having said that I've been to a few Giants games too and if you want to be close to the action you can actually hear everything (like the slap of leather on leather when they kick the ball, and what the players are yelling to each other). It's like suburban football from a bygone era.

I reckon it's natural they sell so many tickets in canberra - lots of interstate transplants there and not a huge amount of local pro sport to watch. they're the only afl team there and they're not there for all their home games, so it's more of a treat than a match in sydney.

I've actually been blown away by the NRL support over here. Went to the Sydney-Penrith game and that was crazy. The GWS will always have a small loyal following, as well as one of the more ethnically diverse and youngest fanbases in the league which will give them a decent foothold going forward, but I feel that TV money and league subsidies will prop them up for the next 20 years at least

  • @thegaz-man

Tassie absolutely needs a team, and I've been a big fan of moving the Suns to Launceston if Tas doesn't get the 19th licence. Not sure the market could support two teams at the minute, but moving GWS to a 50/50 Canberra home split might work.

I'm not sure if QLD and NSW can support two teams - GC and GWS still require big financial support from the AFL and don't get the crowds to be self-sustainable. I feel like a Tassie team would reliably draw 25k per match if they shared home games between Hobart and Launceston, not sure how it would go if that market was split in two.
