What remains of the Neanderthal in us?

Ойын-сауық

Since his first bones were discovered in Germany in 1856, Neanderthals have raised many questions in our minds.
Why did it disappear 30,000 years ago? Do we still have some of his genes in us? What does the work on deciphering the Neanderthal genome give?
Director: Tamara Spitzing, Jörg Müllner

    I am truly fascinated by these intelligent, empathetic, and resourceful people. They were, I believe, as human as we are and I'm glad a bit of them lives on in most if not all of us. I'm proud of my bit of Neanderthal DNA--these people were survivors and hung on in conditions that might well do for many humans but managed to keep their humanity, caring for sick and injured members of their group, burying their dead and even managing to create a bit of art. This is why I refer to them as homo sapiens Neanderthalensis.

    It’s very possible that modern Homo sapiens would never have made it through to today if earlier ones hadn’t interbred with Neanderthals. I think they have given us much of their physical strength, and ability to persevere in very rough conditions.

    Africans have very very little Neanderthal DNA and they are strong, caring, and intelligent. We of European descent are all 98% African. The 2% Neanderthal DNA gave us lighter skin, maybe diff hair, maybe more blood clotting factors. Nothing so grandious as what you mention

    Well done documentary. I learned things I did not know. Like Neanderthals being around for 300,000 years. We still have a long time to go before we are that successful as a species. Looking at the state of things today we'll be doing good to survive another 300 years, much less 300,000.

    From what I understand, the Denisovans were generally further east, as in Siberia and maybe as far south and east as Mongolia. They apparently interbred with modern humans in other Asian countries. Although this video says that there is as much Neanderthal DNA in Asians and South East Asians today (of course I heard that just as I was typing the first part of my comment). I guess the origins and intermingling of Denisovans will be a separate video, as it seems to me that if there are Asians with Neanderthal DNA, some of them are likely to also have Denisovan DNA as well.

I am positive they combed their hair and tied it back or cut it or braided it. They bathed. They had better teeth than was portrayed I’m sure. Not as much carbs and sugars. What I don't understand was the references to the great apes as my whole immediate family are Rh O- blood type and my tooth roots are 3 times longer than most humans. But if many of us have some neanderthal dna, well then they're not extinct are they? They simply bred with homosapiens sapiens over thousands of generations (many others too) and became diluted. Hence many of us have a few % of their dna. Please feel free to disagree/explain. The film made no clarification of this important point.

    No. The theory is rather that Nenaderthal was largely genocided and that the interbreeding that took place was the fruit of Neanderthal women captured especially at the beginning of the arrival of sapiens, less when it was in the majority or it hunted Neanderthal.

    I feel the same way about meat. Especially when I was pregnant - most other food tasted like dust in my mouth, if it wasn’t meat. I make myself eat vegetables and fruit. Carbs like grain aren’t really my thing. Neanderthal heritage?

  • @lindatullos9430

    @lindatullos9430

    3 ай бұрын

    nah grains (carbs) are a newer addition to our diet 10k years. So cultures that grow them will have more tolerance to them. It isn't related to N genes as homo sapirns also were meat eaters and hunter /gatherers until the advent of farming and "civilization" which also brought on the use of slaves for labor and shortly after major warfare as other groups desired what entrenched peoples had .(much as raids on other hunter /gatherer tribes would be to claim women for breeding and to reduce competition for foods in the area. The homo sapiens were the travelers who entered the neanderthals land so food was likely the motivating factor for their movement out of Africa.(as Neanderthals also moved out of Africa 100,000's of years before)

    Gosto muito das séries que tratam de temas dos Neandertais. Acredito que outras áreas da ciência moderna deveriam interagir mais nas pesquisas. Para mim existe uma diferença entre falar de humano e humanidade. Das coisas que tenho acompanhado para mim fica claro que a humanidade está mais ligada aos Neandertais do que aquilo que se convencionou-se chamar homem moderno. Será que não estamos presos demais na ideia da evolução dos símios africanos e dando pouco espaço a evolução dos outros grupos humanoides que surgiram em todo o planeta? É fascinante saber que a ciência é um universo aberto de possibilidades.

    I'm halfway through the video and I think it's incredible that they don't mention that Neanderthal Man disappeared in the territory that is currently Portugal 🇵🇹, the western most point in Europe! They were constantly pursued by Homo Sapiens to a place from which they could no longer escape: ahead, Neanderthal Man only had the sea! Without any possibility of escaping, it was here that Sapiens decimated them, ending the species!
