    You're definitely right that tricks shouldn't have built-in stance arguments, and that FS or BS should be attached to any and all (body) spins. However, calling that shit anything other than a Ghetto Bird is an insult to Kareem, who was *clearly* responsible for introducing and popularizing it under that name...gotta pay respects where they're due, man. Nobody ever heard that name until THPS 2, and nobody ever saw one before Kareem's part in (what I believe was) Rodney vs. Daewon. What you showed Kareem do should be known as a "Nollie BS Ghetto Bird".

    Disagree on the directions... A Caballerial for example is always FS.... Why can't the trick just be called a Ghetto Bird when its Nollie BS and if you do Nollie Hardflip FS 180 you just called it exactly that ... It's that ONE EXACT trick that get's that name and otherwise you just spell it out ... just my opinion.

    you should definitely do a video on caballerials and the whole "full cab" controversy. also I've always found it interesting how older skaters use terms that most skaters now would think are incorrect like heelflip shove it instead of varial heel or frontside half cab flip

  • @RadRatVideo

    @RadRatVideo

    What controversy? Just that saying 'full cab' is unnecessary? Yeah I was thinking about that too... "varial" is a vert trick, so a "varial kickflip" seems more like a vert term. I'm pretty sure the Tony Hawk games are the ones that made that popular. Might be worth looking into...

    It’s all cuz skaters were in different parts of the country for decades. There were thousands of names for every trick and unless people were traveling around and visiting other cities to skate the tricks all kind of morphed into their own names. Eventually standardisation slowly has come into play. At the end of the day I think Kareem pulled off the single coolest looking trick in history, the late 180 on his whole body is so steezy, while I’ve seen no one else do that with that late of twist last second. But at the end of the day, let’s just skate, names only matter when teaching other people how to do a trick so people can search the correct trick to learn, but all tricks in skating are sick as fuck!

    Hello @Rad Rat Video. I really appreciate all your work on this channel. I wasn't totally sure I agreed with your stance (pun subconsciously intended) on The Ghetto Bird. That was until I heard your last comment - about how the term should just be replaced with Hardflip 180 and so on. I feel the naming of a trick should be able to help people figure out what the trick involves, and without knowing anything about this topic, it would be natural to have no fucking idea what a "Ghetto Bird" entails. I'm probably waffling so.... yeah. Thanks for the videos. :-)

    I just rewatched, and oh snap, my mind is BLOWN! Kareem Campbell's was actually a big spin variant, not a revert in the opposite direction!! Wow, I never realized that, it's because Tony Hawk ruined hardflips!! Kareem's nollie hardflip is backside and regular hardflips are frontside, but they BOTH pivot backside 180, so Kareem's ghetto bird really is a big spin variant. The modern ghetto bird (hardflip BS 180) only looks like Kareem's version because both hardflips were popped so vertically, it just looks like a vertical flip trick + BS 180.

    Since it was a nollie hardflip late BS 180º that means in switch it's a hardflip late FS 180º and switch is regular just on the opposite side. So I'd say with that logic, a regular ghetto bird is a hardflip late FS 180º( or a deconstructed FS bigspin flip as you said) like you see Bo Turner and the three others do @3:26. So if we call that the ghetto bird, then what Kareem did is a nollie ghetto bird, and if he's rolling the other way it's a switch ghetto bird and if he does a fakie hardflip late fakie fs 180º it's a fakie ghetto bird. Thanks Rad Rat, I love your videos and your trick breakdowns. You really know your stuff.

    If you do a regular hard flip front 180 that becomes a frontside big flip because the board rotated a full 360. What makes a ghetto bird imo is you rotate opposite of the spin of the hard flip , so when Kareem did it nollie the board flips behind him so he turn his body inward , same with regular , hardflio spins behind you then you whip it in back 180 the opposite direction

    fs big flip is a heel flip. You're talking about a hard flip big spin. the hard flip -front 180 is done LATE. the 180 that is

    I'm currently playing in my PC a Skating simulator that is in its beta version called Session, and the Ghetto Birds you can make there has the name as Modern Ghetto Bird, and works exactly in regular stance with an Ollie, the physics in the game let you make an "original ghetto bird" (just to name the one with nollie stance) and looks really really accurate to Kareem's but they haven't put the name Ghetto bird on it. Nice video tho.

    I'd like to see a video about slappies or even the origin of casper flip/hospital flip? I also like to look at old skate setups and why sometimes they were more functional than we like to think. Cool video though, I love kareem cambell

    Skating should have something like TKT; a terminology where you break moves down by the peices. Tre flip would be something like 360 shuv-kick flip, fs flip would be fs180-kick flip

    What do you mean a hard flip is already backside? A hardflip is basically a frontside flip without the body varial. That's why it's so hard because you catch it and then do a backside 180.

  • @RadRatVideo

    Not a regular hardflip, a nollie one. The directions are opposite in nollie. The board is spinning in the same direction as the late backside 180.

    Keep the odd names of tricks. Kinda like code names that describe more than the trick itself. Ghetto Bird has a fun origin to it describing the skater's time period and influences. Strictly naming a trick on what the board and or skater does sounds clinical, lacks creativity, and gives no homage to the creator of the trick. When I hear a crazy sounding name it grabs my attention, it makes me want to learn what it is and where it came from and what I can do with it.

    Plain and simple keep the name, that is like wanting to rename the caballerial 360 fakie ollie or the Helipop a 360 nose ollie (I did that on purpose) we know the simple elements that these tricks are comprised of(and if we don’t we learn and adapt) but by eliminating names you are stripping these artists of their creativity, self expression and and their legacies and just sucking the fun right out of it honestly. 360 nollie = helipop /360 fakie ollie =caballariel nollie hardflip + FS revert = ghetto bird fakie hardflip + BS revert = fakie hardflip BS revert (if not ABD)
