While I really like the voice for it, I've yet to play a male sylvari because their run animation looks so dainty. It looks less like a run and more like a frolic, which is always very strange to me whenever the area is a hostile one. lol

Advisory for Norn or Charr: If you play as Norn or Charr, and you go full size, you will be a giant thing on a regular sized mount, and you'll look somewhat ridiculous. If you reduce your size, your mount shrinks too, so you'll still be a big thing on a little mount... it's just that your mount will be even smaller, and it'll be smaller than anyone else's, because the mount size range is not race-based. If you do go max size, you'll find that the gameplay feels slower, and you spend your time with the camera zoomed out more/embedded in scenery. Would not recommend for a first character; you'll miss visual details and may feel less immersed in the world. Advisory for Sylvari players: Your skin tone impacts the base colours for some of the racial armour (because the Sylvari armour is a living extension of them, visually). Also, if you play as Sylvari female, your voice actress is Bastila from KOTOR 1. Advisory for human players: If you are a human male, you will struggle to find any face that doesn't look prepubescent. Even if you do find an appearance that doesn't make you look like a member of a boy band, your ears will be weirdly pointy due to a low poly count on that specific body part. Also be aware - your generic nature as a human may mean that any armour fundamentally works with them, in terms of fashion... but it also means you'll never look fantastic and interesting, just... fine. No, strapping wings to your back and painting your armour black doesn't change that. Advisory for Asura players: If you're trying to make a "cute" Asura instead of a creepy little goblin person, please reconsider your life.

Hey WP, I have a recommendation for new player tutorial videos like these. I think that the average viewer is more used to tutorials in which there is a constant background change/slideshow-like format. This helps keep the viewer captivated and makes it feel less like a lecture and more like an exciting topic. While it is important to have your videos stand out from others, I feel like that slideshow style is already engrained into the minds of most of us.

My first - and main - character was a Charr, and I've always enjoyed the lore surrounding them. Although they're brutish, they are like that for a reason, as the Charr have almost always had to deal with wars - be it infighting between the high legions, their history with the humans and more recently their fight against Kralkatorrik's Branded minions and Ascalonian ghosts that never die. Visually, they probably have the most unique look when it comes to the face and body - with different horns, adjustable teeth size and angle and a variety of fur patterns. Heavy armor on the Charr mostly looks good, while medium armor is hit-and-miss and light armor is largely not great on them. Unfortunately, too many armor sets with the Charr in general have some awkward stretching and tail clipping that have yet to be addressed. Also, their shoulder pieces can look a little too broad and wacky at times, so you may have to hide some of them for the best look. The voice acting for the Charr is some of the best - save for the new male Charr voice. As sated in the video, jumping puzzles are... clunky when dealing with the larger races. All in all though, I rather like the Charr compared to most other races. The flaws that exist with them are mostly on a technical front, and they are otherwise one of the most interesting of the Tyrian races. And hell, they are pretty much the ones responsible for bringing the human race to its knees in Tyria between re-conquering Ascalon and the invasion of Orr - both of which put their respective leaders is such a tight corner that they doomed their own people rather than retreating or surrendering.

Sylvari and Charr are my favorites. Sylvari are genuinely the coolest race idea I've seen in an MMO. It's such a neat concept that this race is so young yet thrust into the world in this developed state. I love the implications of it. They have this near-unfiltered view of the world and they get to explore it. I also love them for fashion. They can wear anything and make it work. Then you get to coordinate with more colors because a pink Sylvari is totally normal. The Charr are partly because I played GW1. It's cool to see them as a playable race after that. I also just love their cultural looks. These giant metal buildings and scrap everywhere. I love how big they are. Their war-like mentality on everything. The different Legions for personal RP purposes. Usually, beastial races in MMOs are more like fuzzy humans. Charr go a long way for me towards breaking that idea with their animations and lore.

about the race size and jumping puzzle part: I started with a Charr and it did need a bit of getting used to jumping with mine but I did get the hang of it relatively quickly I believe. I now reached the point where I jump best with my Charr and if I go on an asura I jump actually worse. most likely any new player will do best at jumping with the race they actually learned their jumping puzzles with, with sylvari and human beeing roughly the same size and proportions so switching between those is easiest. not to mention humans appear in a lot of other games and its what we are in real life, so those 2 races might the most comfortable learning curve for a lot of people in my opinion. of course if someone comes from another game where they played a smaller sized character and got some practice with movement in that size asura can be just as easy too. same if one has a similar preexisting experience with bigger fantasy characters and norn. though Charr do stand out a bit as their proportions and animation when it comes to movement isnt something I have really seen elsewhere. further on the general "what should I pick" question: as minor as WP made th story impact sound, I believe with how different those early story chapters are across races it can impact your enjoyment of the game. for new players they probably will either get invested and play a lot or drop it before getting to max level even. so if you are starting out but story and/or combat/exploration with your first character seems to be lacking or feels off in some way, maybe try a different race for a bit and see if it changes anything. coming back to my exprience, I reached such a favorism with Charr that any class I play is more fun on a charr than other races and I cant really narrow it down to any specific reasons besides "I like charr" xD and I do have characters of each races and do try to give them some playtime and enjoy them as best as I can.

One other difference in personal story: at level 50 you pick one of the NPC races to help out. You have a choice of three races to help--each with their own story line. Which three (out of five) they are depends on your race. Humans or Sylvari can help Hylek, Quaggan, or Skritt. Norn can help Grawl, Hylek, or Ogres, etc. See "Racial Sympathy" in the wiki for more details.

WP in one of these videos you should mention birthday gifts and that it can be worthwhile to create several characters at the start even if you don't use them right away. Having a stable of characters already to go can also help if your just not feeling the class you have been playing on a particular day. Taking the time to set up a character can possibly dissuade from giving something else a try. And continuing on a class your not enjoying as much at the time could lead to quitting the game.

Just a note that if you're doing free to play, you can't access Lion's Arch until level 35 so if friends are trying the game before buying together it may be more advantageous to try the same race together. That said I think it's worth it to muck about in character creator for a bit for each race at first since they all have some pretty fun options, and when making a sylvari remember to click the light bulb symbol. Makes it easier to play with the glow they get at night

One thing that I think is always overlooked in these videos about choosing a race is the racial locked skills (healing, utility, and elite.) I understand that most of them aren't as good compared to the class-specific ones, but sometimes choosing a race whose race-skills compliment the class-skills can make a difference. For example, I personally love the Asura's "Radiation Field" utility skill. It is a long lasting combo field that poisons enemies. I use it for my Thief, Necro, and Engineer. It works well with all 3 classes, but especially for Engineer. I can create a poison field, as well as the Tool Belt gains an additional skill that Poisons up to 5 enemies within a 240 (or 360???) radius around you. It also works well with the thief when using a short bow, as your auto attack deals additional damage to poisoned foes and you have access to Radiation Field immediate at level 11 when utilities are unlocked. The Norn have a utility skill that calls a bird to attack your enemy and inflict bleeding, IIRC. That syncs well with a Norn Ranger. I don't really enjoy the Norn in general so I'm not sure how it syncs with most classes. The Charr have a Warband Elite Skill where you can call on your Warband to attack your enemies. This is a pretty sweet skill for any class, but it syncs well with Thief, I think. Those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head so I thought I would share them. I just always find it interesting when people completely overlook this. Perhaps it's because most people don't use them, in lieu of the class-skills. However, I personally use Radiation Field in any class. I suppose the only issue that trait lines to affect race skills, in that they get reduced recharge or anything. Anyways, it would be interesting to see a video that tries to use these skills with the different classes and decide which ones work together the best in a build. It could change the way people think when choosing a race/class combo. :)

ArenaNet have never added new races because it would be so much MORE work than in other MMOs, not because it doesn't matter. To introduce a new race, they would need to create: 1. A new city and starting zone. 2. 7 new personal story arcs. 3. New versions of every armor set in the game. 4. 9 new sets of cutural armor. 5. New voice acting. 6. New racial skills. 7. Probably more stuff I can't think of. Other MMOs aren't like that; that's why they get new races every expansion. GW2 set the bar so high for racial uniqueness that they'll never feel that the time and resources are justified in creating a new one.

To be honest, Tengu were originally meant to be playable in game at GW2 launch. So a lot of work os actually already done for them. Plus that winds area that could easily have a city/two zones. Also with us in Cantha, maybe after the Tengu wish to explore mainland Tyria, and contact those Tengu behind that wall. Then for next expac we get Tengu. It'd fit, and be way less work than a fresh new race. I don't think it will happen, but out of a new race or Tengu, Tengu would be my bet.

Hi, I came back to GW2 a few days ago after many years. At 02:40 you say that size doesn't matter. Don't you have to select a target (enemy player) by clicking on him/her with your mouse in RvR / WvW? Yes you can shortcut "next enemy" on your keyboard but if you want to select a specific player is there any other way than clicking on the enemy? For that reason a very small Asura should have an advantage compared to a huge norn or charr. They are harder to "klick" on and they can hide better in corners etc. and launch an spurprise attack etc. Well... that's my experience in other PvP oriented MMOs like DAoC.

WP, when you start the game after tutorial a new character, will have access to starting maps of all races Example: you selected human you will start at Queendale after tutorial video, Waypoint for Asura start map in Metrica province will be available and so are the other starting map of other races norn in wayfarer, plains of ashford for char and caledon forest for slyvari. That means if you have a friend who started with you and chooses a different race, you both and party up level up via map roaming or story grating they choose same country like both NA or EU.

I just finished the heart of thornes story for the first time on a sylvari and I can't imagine a better and more immersive experience with any other race. It feels so incredibly personal. From the very first moment you start playing a sylvari, before your character is even alive, you are right at the heart of the story. It is your wyld hunt, your special interest, your calling. Anet managed to make you feel like a chosen one, without making you a chose one, which is really, really cool. Especially since the story also emphasizes that a wyld hunt can fail. All the other races kind of stumble into the main story. So yeah, if you want the most emotionally intense story, definitely play a sylvari.

Yeah for sure, as you talk about the racial abilities, show them, as you talk about JP's, show them and how much harder it is on big or small characters. Show how armour looks on Charr and how a lot of outfits just have it swinging under a dress with a lot of clipping issues at times (Some suits work really well of course, just a lot more work compared to a human/salad/norn)

Hi, a thing I missed is if you make key farm characters (the once a week black lion chest key level 10 story), the fastest way to do that is certain choices on a human due to the specific story lines. And preferred on a human warrior as some skills help there to do it faster. Or at least this is what I have been told. Also as someone mentioned the voices are different and the phrases they say are different for a race. I have all races, but I like human the least for this. I get so annoyed by the "I can outrun a centaur" that I don't play much with human. For me personally jumping puzzles are fine with all characters but it tends to be easiest with the asura indeed. For sylvari, human or norn I don't find it much different. Overall I take one of my norn, unless a mesmer is needed which I don't have as norn yet. I don't really feel it's harder on a norn than on human. Charr is different here though. They move in a different way and it can be very hard in jumping puzzles. About your point of fashion wars, I like the cultural armour of the norn the most and sylvari is very pretty too, of course this is a personal taste. Far most I like the norn as it fits better what I have in mind for my characters. If in the end you want to go for the fashion wars or have a specific thing in mind you like to create in game, it would be good to check out the Internet with all the armour available and especially also the cultural armour to find out upfront what will fit best. But also the weight will be important here, will you choose a heavy, medium or light class to play as skins are different and give different options. If you play certain content where it can be crowded like world bosses, zergs in WvW or even strikes or raids, I prefer playing norn too (or charr) as usually they stick out and with asura I find it really hard to find yourself back in the crowd and to get the camera angles right. But again, that's my personal taste about playing the game. In the end it all comes down to taste which type suits you best and what do you like to play best. Nicest way to discover is having at least one of each to find out for yourself. Good luck with making choices for new characters! :)

I remember back when GW2 came out, all I wanted to play was Asura because they had the Golem suit elite skill. Back then, skill points were blue arrows and you had to acquire each one by one (jumping puzzles were REQUIRED for points and no mounts to cheese). I saved every point till I could buy the Golem suit skill and was so happy to see how cool it looked. I even used it in my first WvW, only to later find out race skills were crap and I had wasted my time and points (talk about demoralizing a new player). I quit after the event in the human city that opened the multi-element zone arena that was promptly taken over by clockwork creatures (I believe they were made by a Sylvari pretending to be Harley Quinn). I managed to level 3 separate characters through that single event. The zerg was fun, the exp was plentiful, and the loot was good.
