I’m a typical white American man and fell in love with a Puerto Rican lady 33 years ago, we’re still happily married and we made two daughters together. I went to Spanish language school at night to learn Spanish to better understand her family and culture.

@@dougkalagian it depends on who I speak with since there’s a LOT of different dialects and they often use different words that confuse the hell out of me but, with Puerto Ricans and Cubans I understand them just fine. I’d place myself at around 40% fluent but when I’m in PR or Spain and I’m surrounded by Spanish speakers it pushes me to learn and speak more Spanish and I don’t have a typical guero accent. Watching TV commercials where some white guy is speaking Spanish horribly is like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard.

I'm a man from Mayaguez Puerto Rico and I've been married to my American wife for 28 years and we have 2 wonderful kids. I absolutely love my wife and she loves me. We are going to be grandparents in a few months and life is great. Love can found and if you do, please don't be afraid to compromise and make sacrifices as both have to make sure we provide a good life for our kids and us.

We live in the mainland but we visit the island every 2 years or so. We like to keep our kids close to family from the island and we enjoy the culture.

I feel the same way. The value system is different. In the Island we put family over everything. In the U.S and most other places, the object is to leave as soon as possible and the in laws are shunned and treated like crap. They act like they have to pick a side for everything. We have massive family get togethers flr everything. They do it once a year and call it a family reunion. There is no warmth or culture in the US it's a gender war, and life is work, home, work home, work, home u til you are old and grey. Hell no. Give me my Puerto Rican woman with nice nalgas who can cook, and we can take our family to the placita to party and enjoy the holidays instead of being stuck working on the holidays.

No, no and no. Relationships are already difficult, stay within your own culture, beliefs, values, etc.. . .everyone can relate and be much happier.generally. I love my Puerto Rican culture, the people, the music, our identity our love for our land can only truly be shared and understood by and with another Puerto Rican. To put it simply, it's a foreigner. But if you're from Mexico, specifically, due to some American units during the Mexican-American War (1836-46) wearing green uniforms, they were called Gringos
