I started cycling last year, I was really out of shape. I was heavy so I was barely at 1 watt/kg. I was on the bike 3 times a week, lost 30 lbs + and now I'm at 2 watts / kg. Ftp is approx 160-180. 85kgs. 45 years old.

Rockin Ronnie Keep it up. I'm only a couple of years younger than you. I started nearly 5 years ago. If you do the k's you'll get better every season for at least the first five seasons. I'm now 75kgs, FTP 300 at last test but has been higher. Form fluctuates a bit and sometimes you'll wonder where the improvements are. I did 8000 kms last year but didn't really see any change. This year did some hard indoor training in Jan and Feb, back on the bike by March and now knocking over all my PB's for fun.

I'm 43 years old and started road cycling in January 2021 (at 42). Used to go for a run occasionally and off-and-on in the past and I am kitesurfing since about 15 years, with a multi-year break when my kids were little. Estimated cycling FTP was probably not higher than 150 W when starting beginning of 2021. Cycled around 40 km per week overall average in 2021 and close to 100 km per week since beginning 2022. Did my first 100 km road cycling group tour last week. Measured FTP (with dual power meters) is now 245 W. Physical and mental impact are big: I am much stronger, sleep better and generally feel good and energized all the time, with no more feelings of stress/anxiety. Sports have become an essential part of my routine now and I look forward to progressing towards a 300 W FTP.

So i went to gym and tryed to train on cycling device with computer. My FTP was 80-90 at first day of training, very frustrating. Second time i went there, it was 110-120 FTP and i hope it will increase at least to 150 FTP in 1 month.

Coming from a rock scrambling and casual MTB background. I expect to reach that in 16-24 months. Eat, live, breath, and rest cycling. Maybe an altitude tent is next! I want to crush e-bikes!

It's not just about FTP. Racing is a different ball game. You need explosive power and fast recovery to accelerate out of corners and keep the wheels when the leaders put the hammer down. I am 42yrs old, 75kg and my FTP is around 330. If you want to race in the UK you need to sustain 4.5w/kg for over an hour, and be able to push out 700+ watts at least for short bursts. The last time I raced (CAT4) the pace hit 50kmh from the flag, into a headwind and up a false flat. I was off the back after 2km.

I could lose 2kg to be in race shape and I'm only 3 weeks into the first of 4 months of interval blocks following base training, so my aim will be 315 Ftp in 3 months time. I jave a weird heart. Max hr of only 164, but a resting heart rate of 37. Seriously aiming for 335 ftp or 5w/kg by 45 years old, which will be my peak. Never ridden in a group though because I'm an expat in China. Desperately would like to test myself in races.

I don't think you can categorically say, if your ftp is 200, then you'll be able to race and be competitive. It depends on the course, and a more telling number is going to be watts/kg, especially on rides that involve any climbing.

I'm a triathlete for 1 year now. Bevore I started with triathlon I rode about 1.000 - 1.500 km on a road bike. I train sice October with Christian Nitschke from trisutto. My FTP was about 240-250 Watt in October. Now I weight 68kg and my recent FTP is 263 Watt (3,8 W/kg), according to zwift. I agree, get a trainer, he will push you to your personally best. A couple of guys said it already, you've to compare the W/kg, this value is the right one. If you assume most of the competetive riders are between 55 to 75 kg it would be still a big difference. Here is a example: 250W/55kg=4,5W/kg and 250W/75kg=3,3W/kg

I started cycling on and off last summer but almost nothing (and no background in sports or working out whatsoever) 34yrs old guy, 75kg 181cm. After maybe a month dedicated training this spring I did a lactate and VO2max test which showed my LT @ 115w/125bpm and AT (FTP) @ 165w/165bpm. Max pulse 201bpm. VO2 3368ml/min = 44,9 VO2Max and I had to stop the test at 240w because my legs had no power left. At that point my lactate level was 9,3mmol/l. The test was performed 2023-03-20 and I´ve now cycled according to a dedicated schedule with about 3 rest days a week. I just came back from what was supposed to be my first real HIIT session and it didnt go as planned, but anyway during the ride my 20min max power was 206W, and I feel a good improvement since the test. In 2 months I´ll do a follow-up test same as the first one, if I remember I can comment below this about my results after 4 months training.

I’m 15 years old, I started cycling in October 2018... I always practiced sports, swimming, MMA and weightlifting... My first FTP test was on 22/04/2018 and it was of 238W for 00:59:57 and it was brutal... probably the worst hour I have ever done! Ever! And my max sprint was 510W at 55kg and after that I started training intervals, sweet spot, all the good stuff... My last FTP test was 14/06/2019 and I averaged 255W for 1:00:03 and my max sprint was 592W... both sprints were made in the same session... after 10min of easy pedaling after the one hour... and the last test I weighed 58kg and I did no dexa scan but I can see more veins in my legs, and I started seeing some striations on my tear drops(my legs)... So I assume that I gained muscle... I definitely feel that my legs are bigger... I am trying to raise my FTP to 275W till the end of September! So... Wish me luck!

  • @LarsRR

It‘s probably best to test your power on a bike with a power meter or a turbo trainer like the one in the video. Erg-bikes, like the ones found in most gyms, can give a general idea of your capabilities, but are hardly ever accurate. If your numbers were to be correct as you write them (the speed has hardly any meaning), you should really go for the pro peloton soon. 375 watts for 10 minutes at the reported age, weight and style of training would be absolutely phenomenal... Which makes me doubt the figures very much.

  • @fredsimon

Great content and amazing work for people who wish to understand a bit more about power output. however a small correction: FTP doesn't mean something you can sustain for one hour. This is a common misconception. it is merely the line between aerobic and anaerobic. FTP duration can vary from 30+ min to 80+min depending on individuals. The 95% rule is a fair estimate but comprehensive data analysis is often a better way to nail it down to a few watts margin. Keep it up !

I just got a power meter enabled trainer and I'm trying to understand a little bit more where I am starting from. I can find things on people who race, but that hasn't been me and won't be me. Of course then it doesn't matter that much as I just have to be good enough to enjoy my ride and get home, but we are all a bit competitive...just look at all the arguments about FTP in the comments. 211 which is about 2.8w/kg is where I am starting from for my first FTP test(20 min). 45 year old guy (who uses his wife's KZread account). As I spend the winter training for power, it will be interesting to see what will happen when I get back outside in the spring.

For all you can do a 5 sec/1min/5min/10min/20min/1 hour FTP. I am on a wahoo kickr and honestly the more you practice the better you can get. A goodeasure then is to standardise your weight by using a watts per kg metric. Or if I could ride 320 watts for 1 hour at 80 kg I would have a 4watts/kg metric. Smaller riders weighing 55 kg could achieve the same W/kg metric by riding 220 watts. So you can see the difference. Use the watts per kg, as you get a double motivation here. 1. To loose weight and loosing weight and maintain watts you get a better watts/kg and also as you improve your FTP you can also increase your watts per kg.

I weigh 64 kg so I will not put as much power as someone like you who probably weighs ~75 kg. These numbers are only good for someone in your weight class. Knowing your weight would let me translate these numbers to someone like me. Alternatively, it would be good to get W/kg. Power is problematic for people like me when looking at other people's data on Strava for example because I am lighter than the average male road cyclist.

Indeed, the premise of the video is "fatally" flawed as is the thinking behind it. *Some people watching this will mistakenly believe that power numbers are "portable".* It's high school physics. I did not want to just pile on (youtube troll style). It is not a useful behaviour and I have enjoyed several of Daniel's videos.

    I'm not telling you that you are wrong or that theory. Just want to learn something. Your explanation seems right for me. Before you write that I do some math. Rider1 - 100 kg - 250W - 2.5 W/kg Rider2 - 50kg - 125W - 2.5 W/kg And we add some 10 kg bike. Rider1 - 110 kg - 250W - 2.27 W/kg Rider2 - 60 kg - 250W - 2,08 W/kg That 0,19 W/kg is huge on that scale. And that is science not just theory. THX for explanation.

Yesterday I used power meter pedals for the first time and averaged 137 W for just under an hour. My max power was 436 W, my 20-min avg was 164 W, and normalized was 174 W. So my normalized power to wt was almost 2.4 W/kg, right? I have no idea what to make of those numbers, but I'm learning. At least now I'm collecting the data.

I just got my Elite Drivo last week, this is the first power meter I've ever owned. I still need to do the formal FTP test, I'm holding off because I've been re-training my cadence for 90+ rpm. My entire life I've been in the 74 rpm range with great power. In my most recent workout, the software told me I sustained 274W for 20 minutes. I believe I'll get stronger as I adapt to the new style of riding. It's similar to re-training your golf swing, I feel like I'm trying to write left-handed at times. I got lazy and ballooned up to 113kg last year, I'm now back down to 93. it's all a process.

Agree with the comments about weight. I'm 54 years old with an FTP of 271. That's pretty good but I weigh 90Kg. That's bad. Power to Weight is a huge factor on "normal" cycling (although there are other considerations, like headwinds and flat courses). On a normal course, with some hills and some gentle wind, I'd rather lose 20Watts and 20Kg. You need to remember that Watts is directly linked to Calories and heat, they are fundamentally the same thing. It's fine pushing 300Watts all day but you'll need to eat 50% more food than someone pushing 200Watts. You will be generating more body-heat and that's harder to dissipate the more mass you have, you could overheat on long climbs. My advice is don't go chasing Watts without incorporating GRADUAL weight-loss into your training. It MUST be gradual so you don't lose muscle-mass. Unless you are already a lean athlete then I would target 1Kg per month as a sensible weight-loss. There's no reason most people can't lose weight at that rate and still train hard. Of course on flat roads and Velodrome tracks it's more about raw power but you still need to accelerate that body-mass repeatedly and unfortunately Sir Isaac Newton said, and I quote, "Fat Cyclists Don't Accelerate Very Well".

The importante thing is not to be closed to 300 or 400 watts. It completely depends on the weight. That’s why what matters is how many watts per kilo you are able to move. For instance, let’s say your FTP is 270 and you are 80kg and my FTP is 180 but I’m 50kg. That means that you can move 3.4 watts per kilo while I move 3.6 watts per kilo. In that case I will be way faster that you.

i started biking recently being big and fat didn't help just before biking I did 3 months of hard crossfit which definitely helped. just got zwift and powder meter @112kg being 6'2" I am at 220W FTP right now with absolutely flat out heart rate reaching 180bpm about 165bpm average. loosing weight is hard on the bike I'm just more hungry after each hard effort. which zone should I stay on to build up and loose weight is going flat out good?

what do you need for our bike to be able to track your Watts? And also can you do this on an in-door Spin Bike? Thanks

Its a bit difficult to compare pure Watts between each other. More appropriate is to look at the W/Kg especially in climbing. Lighweight rider with lower FTP can easily beat Midweight rider with a bit higher FTP once they differ in W/Kg. Then of course the heavier rider is in an edge on the flat against climber... For ex. pro riders can sustain 5min 7W/Kg relative to amateurs with 3-4W/Kg. Interesting is that for longer interval such as 20min the pro can still keep high 6.(xy)W/Kg compare to one hour interval with 6.01W/Kg.

Just starting now on an indoor stationary bike that mimics a trainer - meaning it gives watts, cadence and simulates gears. I'm not even trying to race - I just want to find a good Zone 2 power band @ 85-90 rpm to establish a base. And thus far it seems to be about 85-100 watts (BTW - I'm 49 years old and also an experienced runner, but not cyclist - I have about 1 hour on 4 days/week to train). Any ideas about how to gradually build a base over say 12 weeks, before getting into building a competitive FTP? Thanks.
