    Ohk here's a bit of history with regards to chicken parts, during Apartheid when blacks were disadvantaged and could not afford a lot of things, those parts of the chicken were disposed to be thrown away by white farmers/companies and black people took them for food so over the years it has become like a culture to us. We do eat all those other meaty parts but the these ones carry a lot of memories for us. Although I got to say there's a lot of black folks who also get disgusted by that and they would never eat that

    We've always eaten the whole chicken even in the villages where people breed their own chicken nothing to do with affordability. So obviously when white people came they didn't know that those parts can be eaten, they are a good source of cartilage. Supermarkets started selling them coz of the obvious opportunity to make profit and in the cities we buy them coz we've always eaten them and since we don't have big enough yards to keep our own chicken we buy all those other parts as well.

  • @shawn_d2949

    @shawn_d2949

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@nomfunekonosilela3895 you're right bout the reasons supermarkets started selling them but if you change the setting to townships during Apartheid its a fact that these things were collected by people from farms when they were disposed and then come sell them in townships because they were cheaper it became a better option. So before they went to supermarkets they were sold in those farms (which are the actual suppliers of the supermarket) when they realized the demand for them, they only came later to the supermarket. So they might've been eaten in the villages but the story of how you find a house in the township or a man with a 3 wheel bicycle having a big trunk infront selling only chicken feet, head and intestine this is the context.

  • @nomfunekonosilela3895

    @nomfunekonosilela3895

    @@shawn_d2949 I grew up in the township and none came from the farms to sell chicken feet to us coz those days we had markets in the townships where people sold live chickens, we would buy the live chicken and slaughter it at home ourselves. Also you might not know as Africans we didn't have the freedom to move from one town to another as we please coz of the pass laws, so none would have come from the village and risk being arrested for coming to the city with no permission. I remember my mother used to cook that for us to eat as a snack whilst waiting for the rest of the chicken to cook since it generally takes longer. That's how we know how to eat everything. My point is we as Africans eat every part of the chicken because we know it is good for us, the feet are a very good source of cartilage obviously the supermarkets sell it at a cheaper price coz let's face it, it's not a lot of meat there. Those days those old men in their three wheeled cycles were mostly selling tripe and cow trotters not chicken feet.
