Couldn't have said it better myself. Another biggie for me is the guys that show up time and time again with a truckload of mixed material that they then proceed to sort (and clean) at the scale!!

My local scrapyard changed their hours. They close their doors for costumers one hour before employees are set to go home. This way they can get through the people that come last minute and still make it home on time.

There's always a couple of people cleaning and sorting their stuff in the parking lot where I sell my stuff. They make a huge mess and leave nails and crap in the lot. I'm sure the yard just loves to see that kind of activity. The yard does a great job of cleaning up after them, but they shouldn't have to. I try to have a good relationship with the yard. I ask about metals, not tell them... I try to get the same scale operator every time. I think he trusts that I'm not out to screw the yard. I keep my "dirty" brass and aluminum in separate containers, and let them decide if it's clean enough to get full price, or if they'll give me a lower price for it. I always feel like I've been treated fairly. I also know what I have for weight before I sell it..

I had a guy come in that was saving brass colored aluminum shower door frames and wanted to tell me they were brass. He kept saying the other yard he goes to said they were brass and we should write it down as such. Well, go to the other yard Sanford, see ya.

Call think he would like me as a customer. I keep at least a case of water in my truck to share with the employees because South Carolina is hot and humid. Because of your videos I know what items should be bought as and I ask whoever is on the scale what they’re buying it as if they give me the wrong answer. I tell them I’m not selling today thank you I’ll take it home. Which some of the employees are confused by but I am respectful, not argumentative. I’m respectful of the employees at my yard and ask questions Also, I know the owner and now that I’ve been scrapping for multiple years. If I have a question of what something should be or how it should be prepped for his yard I sent him a picture it ask him, and then when his employees on the scale say no it’s this. I show him the text message and say, will you buy as this?

Hey tom, loved the vid and tottaly agree. Im just a scrapper not a yard owner but would like to share what happend to me at a yard that ticked me off and ask if others have experienced things like this. At a yard i used to go to if i braught a load of tin shred in, thier would always be an additional tare on the ticket after haveing already unloaded.. this i could see if it is descussed b4 unloading and agreed to. But it feels like they are reaching into my pocket without permision to do this without any conversation or explination.. this same yard took an intire load of short steel and downgraded it to shred price due to a cast iron sink that had porcalin on it b eeing in it without letting me know so it could be removed. This would always happen with no conversation or warning of any kind. Just let me unload everything and say nothing... hears your ticket goodbye. U-pull em did this to me several times. Is this common practice?

Man, I can't stand it when my yard does this. I could see if you are a one time customer but when you know everyone by name and go once a week you need to let me know. I don't think the employees know how much hard work goes into cleaning material unless they are scrappers too. I took a load of 200 pounds of aluminum window frames in the other day. I cleaned every nook and cranny. I spent hours and hours cleaning them because clean is .60 and dirty is .40 so an extra $40. He put more than half in the dirty category and I am taking for a half inch of caulk. Part of the problem is they have different people running the scales and each one does it different.

I agree with all of this. Funny you talk about speed... I was just at the yard I always go to, and while backing a semi up to the crane, the crane operator got pissed off at me because I wasn't BACKING UP fast enough! I always slow down when I am about 20 or so feet from him, and he was throwing his arms in the air, and getting upset with me. Then the next crane operator stopped for lunch 12 minutes early, and came back 15 minutes late... So, that's what pisses ME off when I go to a yard.

Metal is just a commodity like many things. Scrapyards are the middle man to refiners/smelters. We don’t sell a pickup truckload to refiners. The scrapyard sells to them by the semi truck or train load. I asked a yard owner if he hangs on to anything for prices to go up, basically no. They turn around and sell while they can make a margin of profit versus risking losing money if price goes down. Supply and demand with volume. Kind of like Walmart, for example, sells things for less and may make less on that individual item, but if they sell millions of those items, then they make a profit. Most of us have jobs where we want to make money, not just break even.

I dont show up near closing but if yall are open it shouldn't matter when a customer arrives. If you want to leave earlier close earlier. I would love for scrap yards to mandate people have their metals sorted before they get there. Or at least sorted the best they can. Another thing I would like is for the employees to ask if I need help unloading. Most of the time I would prefer to do it myself because I am much more careful with my vehicle, I know which metals are where and many times I have had non ferrous thrown in the shred.
