What oil should I use in my Harley Davidson?

Ойын-сауық

Today we are in the shop working on a 2017 Harley Davidson streak glide. I need to install a front tire and do a 20,000 mile service on this motorcycle and I thought I'd take the opportunity to explain what azo products we use per viewer request.

    I have a 2016 Street Glide with 101800 miles on it. I have always run Amsoil in the motor, the Amsoil Primary Oil, and Amsoil transmission oil, with no problems. I live in South Florida and started using the straight 60 weight motor oil after I passed 50000 miles, especially for the summer heat here. The oils work great.

    Yeah Amsoil did a test years ago where they put Amsoil on a bike at the 1000 mile service and they ran it hard on the dino for 10,000 miles, disassemble the engine and it showed the characteristics of an engine with 2500 miles. Determining that there was an 80% reduction and wear.

    "What oil should I use in my Harley Davidson?" By Amsoil Adam. I can't imagine what he would recommend. LOL. Great video & great oil. BUT. Any name brand Synthetic 20W/50 is going to be fine changed at correct intervals or by calendar as mention here. I use Mobil One for engine, Red Line Heavy Shock in tranny & Shell Rotella C-4 in primary. Also, A friend recently traded a 2020 Ultra Limited in on a new one. It had 105K+ miles bone stock. No issues & not burning any oil between oil changes. He does LOTS of long trips away from home. And guess what, he changed engine oil every 5K & tranny/primary every other....all with OMG...HD Syn 3.

    Oil coolers are the best thing ever for air cooled motorcycles. Not only cooling but that much more oil in system. Imagine in 100 degree heat in traffic what the oil heat is. It helps to get rid of excess heat. My Suzuki 1100gsx g runs seven quarts of oil in two separate pump and gallery tracts. One for high volume cooling one for high pressure lubrication. Keeps those sixteen valves in head nice and operational temperature range. The machine is capable of 160 mph so I don’t want to worry about oil failure.

  • @amsoiladam

    @amsoiladam

    3 ай бұрын

    I would have to agree with you that oil. Coolers are a great idea on a Harley Davidson, or any other air cold motorcycle. But you know what works even better to cool an air cooled motor,? Air, hence the air cooled. I have an oil cooler on my Harley that even has a fan on it. And if I turn off my Love Jugs, my bike will still overheat. My Love Jugs actually cool my oil better than my oil cooler cools my oil.

I have done many service videos in the past that combined would encompass just about everything that would be included in a five 1015 or 20,000 mile service. However, I am afraid that a single video encapsulating all of this would just be too long and boring.

    THANK YOU awesome content I can't thank you enough for this one new harley owner myself and even though I'm still using my extended warranty I like to know what's going on and how to do it myself because I will have that bike long after the warranty is up and will do the basics myself perhaps with all of us newer subs you could do a full three hole change and all the point to check that are associated with that and please keep up the awesome content great work

  • @amsoiladam

    @amsoiladam

    3 ай бұрын

    You’re very welcome, sir, this pretty much covers the three whole change. I know I didn’t show removing and reinstalling the filter but anyone is going to do with themselves should be able to figure that part out pretty simply. And I have other videos out there in the past as well. And just so you know, you do not have to wait for your warranty to be up in order to use Amsoil. Harley knows it’s a better product and some Harley dealerships actually carry it you just have to ask for it. But regardless, it will not void your warranty.

    I can see how transmission oil can bleed over into the primary on a shovelhead, but can't fathom how it could happen on anything newer. But then I've never touched an M8. Perhaps something changed since the evo/twincam days?

  • @amsoiladam

    @amsoiladam

    3 ай бұрын

    It happens on some of the late model twin cams as well. It’s because the primary itself is not vented so sometimes on long trips when excessive pressure builds up in the primary when it cools down it tries to use the transmission vent to equalize pressure in doing so it sucks some of the fluid from the transmission into the primary.

    Although I know, it’s a huge controversy, most times I will at least fill the filter about halfway. Because the filter goes in horizontally. If you overfill it, you just spill it out trying to put it on. But I like to get enough in there to at least saturate the cellulose so that it doesn’t take as long to build pressure once the engine starts.

My 3017 Road Glide had that issue and I was out of the 2 year factory warranty but had a 5 year additional warranty. Harley would not cover it under the extended warranty, which left me fuming. I reminded my dealer that this was the 4th new Harley I purchased from them and if they wanted to continue our relationship they need to take care of this problem. They did so but reluctantly. This is something that should have been a recall.

    I've never seen a video by you before but reviewers below obviously trust you a great deal. I've only got two things to say: #1. I have never heard of any blown engine or trouble resulting from the use of other major oil brands such as Red Line, Mobil1, Lucas, Motul, Pennzoil, etc, so I've got to assume they are fine oils as well. Everybody has their favorite and I have nothing against Amsoil other than the high price. Until someone proves something is wrong with the other brands, which I doubt they will, my budget does not have room for Amsoil. #2 My arm is really tired just from watching you hold that cell phone with your right arm for so long!

  • @amsoiladam

    There are some other great oils on the market, but Amsoil actually outperforms almost all of them and almost all categories. With me, it’s not just about having a favorite it’s about actual test results and seeing that by using Amsoil, I can significantly reduce the chances of oil related failures. And if you have not seen an oil related failure in a Harley, then you’re not looking for it because it’s all over the place. The number one cause of Harley Davidson engine failure is typically oil failure because of the engines overheating so much in the oil not handling that heat. And no oil on the market is ever been proven to hold up to the heat as good as Amsoil. If you want to see how Amsoil compares to other oils, there’s plenty of information out there, showing how it compares. Which interesting as you never see the information from other oil companies Putting their oil up against Amsoil. As far as cost go, I try to explain to people that using Amsoil, although having a slightly higher court price, is actually cheaper to use in the long run. You get more mileage out of it and reduce the wear. So you can actually save money on your oil changes and add life to your engine Choosing another oil because the court price is cheaper is like stepping over dollars to pick up nickels.

    Yes, the transmission fluid is a gear lube. It’s approximately 110 weight. It’s just engineered to be exactly what that transmission needs. Do a quick Google search and find out all the problems that come from using red line. The transmission fluid is my standard go to with a few exceptions. If you have a 2007 through 2011 six speed transmission, they had some issues with excessive gear, wine, bearing failures, and the really bad clunk into first. The 75, 140 can help with that. If you have a trike into a trailer putting the extra load on there, I like the idea of the 75, 140 again. But not everybody needs the 140. But you’re definitely not gonna hurt it by using it so there is no downside

    What did the customer decide to do about the oil transfer issue? I also have a 2017 107. When my mechanic found the issue of oil transfer, he replaced the push rod from the right side of the tranny to the clutch and that seemed to stop the problem on mine. One of the other major problems on the first couple years of the M8 is the oil pump itself. I think HD updated it on the 2019 model.

  • @amsoiladam

    The pump was an unrelated issue to the engine boiling system. Period. There is no pump in the transmission or primary drive, I have heard that the fat rod kit does help, but it doesn’t actually cure the problem of the primary being vented. It just makes it harder to pull the oil From the transmission. It basically just adds resistance. Is my understanding that the vent kit is the more logical and permanent solution. He does want to do the repair, but there was no time to get the parts here before I had to leave to go to the Mid-America truck show, and he had to go out of town for a little while as well. so we will convene in the future to do that repair
