@@father270 It also seems like they've been together for so long without reallllllly knowing why. It's like they resigned themselves to the idea of spending their lives together. But as soon as they have other options, they don't hesitate to flirt (Moomin with the seahorses and wooden mermaid, Snorkmaiden with Brian). They're settling for one another, but they both deserve so much more

Literally their relationship's main shtick is that they each keep getting new love interests and they were meant as a satirical take on m/f relationships 😭💀

That's what I thought! Like in the old version it felt like two kids playing house or something. But the new version is just so frustrating to me, like they get along so well as friends but keep pushing that they want to be romantic and it's just meeeehhhhh. Like I saw someone else say it's supposed to be satire of the stereotypical hetero hate each other relationship but that doesn't make it any less annoying 😖

That is how I felt about them in the original books, the 90s version felt a bit more serious to me, eventhough still kiddie stuff. But in the books they had a lot of pretend scenarios like Moomin capturing her as a bad guy or Tarzan and Jane lol.

Moominvalley kind of gets Snorkmaiden more than the 90s show. The 90s one made her far more docile and downplayed her spicy characteristics. In the comic strip Snorkmaiden was often mean, and lusting over other men. I think they have a cute dynamic, they're both country bumpkins, but Moomin is at peace with that, while Snorkmaiden wants to come off as a smart city slicker. But really she prefers to live in the Valley like Moomin, she just doesn't realize that.

I was never the biggest fan of MoominxSnorkmaiden. To me Moomin doesn't really care to be around her all the time like he is with Snufkin, while Snorkmaiden is kind of a gaslighter and had issues with jealousy. I think she was at her worst in the 2019 version. Everything Moomin did made her angry for some reason :

These two should just be friends, and agree to pretend to be in a relationship so that people get off their case, and they can pursue their own love interests.

I think even Jansson said that moomin and snorkmaiden are playing at being in love, like when a toddler plays kitchen or dress-up.

There's also another reason why in the comics relationship was far more toxic. Because the Moomins were so popular at the times In the 50's, and Tove Jansson's other works didn't do that well, Jansson started to feel hatred and frustration against her own creation. That's why comic books have so much more mean spirited nature, because Jansson kind a wanted channel her frustration, someway or another. Lot of people didn't know Jansson also did lot of paintings, but usually audience and critics hate and despice those paintings. That's why Jansson really hate Moomins, because everybody loves Moomins, but no one didn't love Tove's other works.

I've only ever read the books, and they're actually pretty low key there (except for _Comet_ where Moomin first meets her, and he becomes completely obsessed). They're just... comfortable with each other, in a very relaxing way, with very little drama. Snork Maiden is a little vain but is actually pretty smart. In _Comet_ she rescues Moomin from a giant octopus fairly handily. I don't know when the books were written compared to the comics --- later, I think? At least the later ones are pretty serious (_November_ is, AFAICT, about depression). Re Tove's other books: go read _The Summer Book_. You won't regret it.

@@hjalfi She started wrote Moomin novels 1940's and both few novels and several comic strips came out In 1950's. Well, when In the novels tone can be little bit more relax and late back, in the comic strips tone was far more mean spirited and satirical. After all Jansson was also very aprecciated satire writer before Moomin novels. And In the comic books, even Moomintroll can behave really agressively. When Mr. Brisk came To Moominvalley, he already start flirting with the Snorkmaiden, and then Moomintroll snaps and is ready to kill Mr. Brisk.

@@HautaAntero that's fair, but it's also important to note that the comic strips were made with less time, as she was pressured to produce a lot of them in a short amount of time, and it the end she gave control over the comic strips to her brother. so it's not fair to just say she hated the moomins, since there's very very little proof to that statement. even when she was very frustrated, she wasn't frustrated with the characters, she was only feeling overwhelmed with the attention they got all of a sudden.

@@cheeseebun I've always hated this type of writing in cartoons, comics, video games and movies. It just give a feel writer had some mental issues which should actually solve in therapy and not in passive-aggressive writing. It makes end product feel more like a bad episode of Family Guy or Brickleberry. Write the story in passive-aggressive way was the thing which makes me leave from Sonic The Hedgehog fandom. It started feel like fransize's writing in games, comics and shows gives fanbase a permission to behave passive-aggressive way just sake of.... what ever reason.

I mean, it could be different, like many people said, this is a relationship that probably came up when they were kids and they just kept up with it until teen years and they don't know what they're doing together anymore and they take any chance (Moomintroll with the seahorses and may Snufkin and Snorkmaiden with brisk) so I hoping that it would be different with Moomintroll and Snufkin since Moomin seems like he ha a genuine interest

Why is she also white? Snorks cannot be white according to original. And they can change color to anything but not white depending on their emotional state. Did they completely skip it in the adaptation and removed from the plot twists?

Maybe it is because of the budget? Idk, but many other adaptations of Snorkmaiden don't change colors (that's disappointing)
