What my sales looked like selling primarily lilies | A week and month look at my sales!
Lilies! They saved my butt (in addition to some other stuff I grew to dry like statice and strawflower). This month, with me going back to work and me focusing on cleaning up the field to get ready for fall, I really didn’t have a lot of flowers. But… I had lilies! So in this video, I talk about what a week looks like selling lilies, the successes, the struggles, and of course, my numbers - both this week and for the month of July!

Thank you ☺️
I just came across your videos and you give out so much information on the flowers you are growing. it’s so educational how you break everything down on growing and financial cost I would like for you to do a video on 25:39 planting in your crates and how you water also do you keep the bulbs in the crates after your done harvesting In the short time I’ve been watching I’ve learned so much thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for all the info. I watched your flower subscription video. I didn’t realize flower farming would be so much interacting with the community. There are already a few flower ladies in my area.

This is the BEST part about flower farming! The community is amazing. All of my recent friends are all from this community 😌
i plant a sunflower every 10 feet in the center of my row it really helps with things like my main crop of calendula
Get a grease pencil - otherwise known as china marker - to write your labels. Grease pencils have no felt pen fumes and last in any weather. Staples sells them under the china marker label in several different colours.

Omg!! This!! Thank you! I’ve been looking for a market that can hold up to the elements. I bought some that were “garden” markers and they literally sweated off in the humidity!! That’s why some of my crates don’t have labels 🤦🏻♀️

@@bareflowerfarm I use them on the sides of my one gallon pots that hold dafs and tulips, they are the best.
Great information! I will definitely grow more lilies next year!

Thank you!! Time and experience are the best teacher. I hope you have a great season!!
Always love your videos and gorgeous bouquets! I’m not sure if you can answer this question but I’ll put it out there anyway; do you think it’s possible to take the lily bulbs out of the garden in the fall and store in fridge over winter and succession plant in the spring? I have so many bulbs that have naturalized that I need to move them anyway and right now I am inundated with all of them flowering at the same time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 😊

Hey there. I actually think it’s worth trying. Theoretically it should work (that’s what the bulb suppliers do) but the real question is what temps they keep them at. I know the bulb suppliers actually freeze them! You may be able to call like Onings and ask them for suggestions!
Lilies are one of my absolute favorites smell included but they’re so toxic to pets. Even if you get pollen on you, and then your cat or dog licks the pollen it can be at best a very expensive vet trip.

I have pets so I don’t risk growing them 😞

It makes sense. Luckily my dog doesn’t at all care for flowers and I’m religious about picking out the anthers before the pollen develops. There are quite a few toxic flowers out there that people grow who don’t realize they’re toxic- larkspur, foxglove and even tulips. Lilies happen to be the most well known (which is good for the sake of our pets)!
I can't remember what zone you are growing in but you should look into Philippine lilies. They can grow up to 8 feet mine are at 5 feet this year, each year it has grown taller since planting. The smell is not strong and before opening they have a deep stripe color on the outside. When open they are white.

I’m in 6b but that’s great to know. Thank you for the recommendation!
Florist here 🙋♀️ Lilies opening is unpredictable. For events, they can't be closed, but they also can't be too open. Petals are very fragile also. Those are main reasons why I don't use them for events if I can avoid it.

This is a good point. I think that it ultimately depends on what the florist is doing- some of my retail florists love the lilies bc they sell well retail but other florists who do installation work or want a larger focal that provides a “dynamic” flair to their centerpieces are also working with lilies. There’s a major wedding designer “tulipina” who does a lot of tulips in her wedding work. I’m not sure how she prevents the bruising and transports them!
You have to give me the secret to have those amaranth smaller like that 😅. Mines about 8 feet tall 🤣
I think pets are another reason people may shy away from lilies, especially cat owners. I don't think lilium are toxic to dogs, but I think that "toxic to pets" can spillover.

Definitely- this is a good point. I always tell folks with cats to err on the side of caution but with I find that people with dogs who don’t touch flowers are OK with lilies!
What would you say is your profit per bulb, and will you perennialize some and toss some bulbs?
@bareflowerfarm
Жыл бұрын
Roughly the cost per bulb was around 75 cents. Crates and compost were free so let’s just say $1 / stem including labor. I sell to florists at $3.50-3.95 and retail at $5. Is it as profitable as something like cosmos were seeds are cents and you get a billion cosmos and designers pay like $1.20 a stem? No. But I still consider it quite profitable relative to other stuff I grow bc they can turn over so quickly!
Where are you sourcing your bulk lilies?

I’m getting them from onings!
How do you deal with the lily beetle .
@bareflowerfarm
Жыл бұрын
Sooo, I am fortunate that I have some but not alot. I have manually killed about 10 lily beetles this year and that is basically me knocking them into a soapy bucket of water!
I love lilies although some of mine haven’t done so well this year. Not sure if that down to not getting the watering right / weather or the bulbs I purchased 🤔 great video as always 🌸

Watering is huge!! You gotta water. Bc my crates are on top of soil, I can get away with less watering since the roots grow into the soil!

I love the scent of lilies but I am soooo allergic to it. My church used to decorate with lilies on Easter and I had to miss church that day!

Aww! They need to find asiatics!
Did you say the rose lilies have less fragrance? I have avoided oriental lilies and only grown asiatics because i don’t like fragrance, but i LOVE the look of the doubles…
@bareflowerfarm

Yes!! They have a much milder fragrance! The doubles are amazing, I would definitely specialize growing them next year!
Aren't lilies like candy to deer? You must have a good deer fence.
@bareflowerfarm

They absolutely are! I would never grow them without a deer fence. Case in point my pot lilies in the landscaping which didn’t stand a chance! Our deer fence is 8ft, so high enough… for now 🤪
Sounds like your baby is going through a growth spurt.

I like lily but the smell makes me sick. Non-scented lily will be great.

I totally get it! It causes a headache for some. Go for the asiatics and their hybrids!
