What Motorcycle Track Day Tires for your 1st Time on Track!

#dabosch #motorcycletrackdays
Hi welcome to dabosch! My name is Dean Bosch and I am a motorcycle track day coach with PRE Track Days. Consider me your virtual motorcycle track day coach! I have been coaching for 5 years and track riding and racing since 2007. I am hear to share the worlds knowledge I am gaining.
This video is about track day motorcycle tires for those who are thinking about riding on the racetrack for the first time or are new to the race track.
There is a lot of things to consider when it comes to doing your first track day. Use the previous videos, this video, and future videos to help prepare you as best as possible for your first time/times!
For your first time I recommend to keep it simple. You already have so much to think about and sensory overload when you get to the track. Just make sure your tires are in good condition with enough life to get you through the day. Focus on having fun your first day, learning the race track, and enjoying the experience. Street tires will perform just fine on your first day.
A track tires for when you are starting to get more serious is another good option. It grips much better and can be pushed harder. It's not ideal for the street as it doesn't provide the best operating temperatures in all conditions nor performance like rain and debris.
Focus on you being a motorcycle rider. You know how to ride a motorcycle and take that mentality to the race track. Take it easy and have fun! Find a coach to guide you on your first day. Enjoy it :)
Ride Safe :)

    Funny vlog and informative. I like the laid back style you present your content. Great job!! I did my first track day in two years, two weekends ago, at Jennings GP. Bike is a 18' Triumph Street Triple RS. Front tire is a Michelin Power 5, rear is a, wait for it, Michelin Scorcher 11 made for a HD Sportster 1200 and the early V-rod sized 180/55. That is a whole other story on how/why I am running it. It has held up well on the road and hooning around on the NC/GA/TN twisty's and is a awesome rain tire and has over 3,000 miles on it The rear did surprisingly well at the track as it is a two compound tire. I was in novice so my pace was not fast and my lap timer was a hour glass taped to the handlebars. The tire got a little chewed up but never did I feel uncomfortable. Now would I make it a habit running that rear for track days, probably not. I like the power 5's as I got good mileage out of the rear{ right up till I had a flat on 1300 mile tour) and the front is still good and provides good under hard braking, turning in and edge grip. Totally agree with your assessment if you're just going to do a handful of TD's a good set of street tires would work just fine. I think if I get to doing one track day a month I'll just find a SV 650 track bike. I'm sure the wife wouldn't care (NOT)! :) Take care a ride safe!

    Hello again DB! Wow that is not bad at all for that tire! The combination no judgments lol. I ran a slick and rain tire one race. That's how crazy the conditions were. The rear tire doesn't know the front tire doesn't match! Front tires can take a beating. I ride a 600 and usually change out 2 rears per front. SV650's are a fun time! That would be an excellent choice. Come on wife lol

    I’ve got a 2014 Daytona 675R with Bridgestone S22, and recently bought a 2020 S1000RR M-Sport, which I just fitted with Supercorsa SP V3. I use both bikes on the street and the track. Two very different bikes but each super satisfying to ride when I’m having an “on” day, where everything just feels right. The number one thing I have to work on is vision - looking up, looking through turns, and relaxing my grip. You really should warn people how addictive track riding can be. From your new fan in Sydney!

    Welcome! Thank you for the comment. The addiction is real!! Sydney! You have some awesome racetracks in your country. Vision is a big game changer. The way our eyes process information and how our body feels. The more we can look up the more balance we have to get ourselves out of sketchy situations. We give ourselves more time to react when we are looking up. If we look down the objects/refrence points just fly by us. I like to ride with a very light grip. In some turns I'm holding on with just a few fingers, transfer a lot of your weight to your lower body so you can relax your grip. I have a previous video on Body position tips giving an example moving around the bike without your arms.

    I ran 10 track days thru novice to intermediate on Michelin power 5 at 30 psi front and rear on my R6 and they are finally starting to drop. Would recommend for anybody starting out, I just pumped them back up to 36/42 psi front/rear on the road and they were fine. Probably no longer good for the track but fine for rolling around on street the profile is still pretty good 👍

  • @dabosch11

    @dabosch11

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the comment and that is solid amount of track days! I’m biased toward the r6! How did you like the Michelins? By drop do you mean the edge grip of the tire is dropping? If that’s the case and You are running them on the street as a commuter to get to point A to point B yes put the pressure back in and ride! If you are experiencing grip issues straight up and down I would change them out. I use to run track take offs on the street when I wasn’t pushing hard on the street and just riding leisurely.

  • @karackennedy3865

    @karackennedy3865

    Yes they are more dropping on the edge now plus I’m getting quicker so I’m asking for more speed and lean angle. I have managed to keep the same lap time as they dropped but I think the balance is now to not push any further on track and swap out. I loved these tyres. Little tiny slides when you were starting to overstep kept everything in check front and rear to no nasty surprises and I was able to build my speed with the instruction from the Marshalls. For new starters an excellent choice of tyre to creep up to the limit on.

  • @dabosch11

    @dabosch11

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yea that’s what I like to hear! I ride more like your style. You can learn a lot from a used tire. Even if you are just doing the same consistent laps, you are finding the limits of the tire as is degrades. Better to switch out before you find the limits on track if you are questioning edge grip. It’s the cheapest insurance you can buy replacing used tires. Then when you throw on a new set of tires the grip is incredible after riding the used tire. Just be sure to take it easier on the street as the Used tires will be harder compound from all the heat cycles.

For up coming track day season (intermediate group), i am going with dot super corsa sc3 rear and sc2 front, gonna be good with cooler morning track temps in march -april vs full on slicks, and regardless of tire choice i always use warmers!

    Tires have come a long way the past 10 years! I am a big fan of Pirelli, the feedback is awesome. I think you are going to love that combo. I like to use tire warmers to increase the life of the tire so it doesn't go thru so many heat cycles during a day. Compound gets harder and harder with every cycle.

    Where are you doing a track day this month?! lol Care if I make a video on this? My younger self would have tried to get away with it. My older self says it’s not worth the risk if there is any hesitation. You don’t want to limit your experience or crash because of the tires. I will come out more expensive. I am not the biggest fan of Shinkos, I didn’t have the best experience with the on the street. I would get a dual compound tires so your set for the next year. I won’t ever underestimate new riders. I’ve had some that are incredibly talented and were limited by the tires by the end of the day. Mind set is everything and eliminating any doubt will make your day easier to focus on other things. You don’t want to be out there and questioning your tires. At 3k miles they’ve had a lot of heat cycles so I’m sure they are hard as a rock. Cooler temps and hard tires aren’t the best combo.

    Welcome to the community! Excited for your journey! Use me anyway I can help.I do trackways on the East Coast as well. Confidence will help the building blocks. Sometimes we have to take a step back. Next track day focus on the positives of what you are doing right and the feelings you like. It's easier to get frustrated with what we didn't do or aren't doing/feeling and that mind set can sometimes deter progression. Smooth applications and progression on the front tire. I would start by picking the turn you seem to enjoy and analyze why, when you are going thru. Is it because you like the way the bike feels, where your vision is? Then apply Reference points to them. They help me build my confidence. It helps me figure out when to brake, turn, look, accelerate, ect. It keeps me ahead of my riding. That might help you build your confidence on corner entry and the front tire. Picking a brake marker, turn in point and gradually pushing them in when you feel comfortable. Hope this help!

    So I have a question I was recently involved in a low side . I'm not sure exactly why it happened but I think I caught my foot peg coming out of a right hand turn that was increasing in elevation. All I know is before the slide the front wheel locked all the way to the left, like the front was on ice and I chucked my bike down the track. Long story short I have zero confidence in my tires (Battlax S22s Currently on the bike) because I'm not sure exactly what happened. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good set of more track focused tires? I have been looking at Michelin Power Cup 2 Tires or Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP V4 Tires. I am also considering running tire warmers. I'm still in novice group and only have done 2 track days, but I want to start taking track day riding more seriously. Also I love the videos man keep up the good work!

  • @dabosch11

    I hope you are all good after the get off! Do you know the life of the Battlax S22? Are they super old, newish, or somewhere in between? I have run the S22s in Advanced group, and you have to be mindful of them overheating in my experience. I really enjoyed coaching on them in Intermediate and Novice as they heat up very quickly without exceeding the operating temps. It sounds like you reached the lean angle of the motorcycle and the peg scraped on the ground and upset the bike. They make aftermarket rear sets to move up to give you a higher ground clearance. Also, moving your butt a little off the motorcycle will also give you more ground clearance and additional lean angle. Newer/Nicer tires will help but they mask the mistakes more. I feel like i can get away with anything! When riding on used tires I find myself paying more attention to throttle control on my right wrist and making sure my body position is set up right. I will use any tire except a shinko lol

    @@dabosch11 Yeah everything was fine after I stepped off the bike. The suit was the most damaged item. The S22's are the ones that came on my R7 they are about 2 years old and have seen about 900 miles. 98% street use. I can tell they have a flat spot on the top of the tire from riding on the street. I also wanted to add that I highly doubt that R7 will see the street again, I would like to start to use it as a dedicated track bike. I was also thinking about getting the suspension set up for me. Is that something you would recommend? Also thank you for the advice I just want to make sure I'm learning the correct things from my mistakes, so I can actually accomplish my goals of being a better rider.

    It sounds like you have a solid game plan. You will learn so much on the r7! 100% get the suspension set up for you. Stock bikes are set up for the road with bumps and to accommodate 2 passengers. You will notice a huge difference with a stiffer suspension set up to your weight. You will feel much more planted and stable with braking, cornering and throttle. Track dedicated tires will give you more confidence as well. I think with new tires and suspension set up you can go far. You got this!
