Today, I'm excited to be announcing the launch of our new VC fund PressResetVentures that's founded by the team at KraveBeauty.
I started KraveBeauty totally bootstrapped with my own savings of $50,000. With the business being self-funded, it might've been scrappier and slower in growth compared to other VC-backed hypergrowth companies. But I'm proud to say our growth has been truly organic, sustainable, and profitable.
Looking back on the past 4 years at KraveBeauty, mindful growth and founder autonomy have been foundational to KraveBeauty’s success. I’ve seen many peer founders devote efforts to please investors rather than serving their key stakeholders - customers, employees, and the environment. That's where I felt the need to set up our own fund to enable other companies to be able to commit to their stakeholders first. Press Reset Ventures strives to reimagine what a successful exit looks like that benefits the stakeholders rather than shareholders.

KraveBeauty ownership: KraveBeauty is my own skincare brand that I founded in December 2017. While the thoughts and opinions that I share on my channel are always genuine, I must acknowledge the direct relationship that I have with KraveBeauty. Thank you for your continued support and understanding, I would not have been able to find KraveBeauty without my #PalmPalmFam.
My background: Please note that I'm not a healthcare professional or qualified cosmetic chemist. I do my best to quote credible sources, bring perspectives from various expertise and sometimes with the help of our research assistant team. But medical research is complex and I can't guarantee the information on this channel is error-free. So feel free to do your own research according to your skin & health concerns. I always welcome feedback to correct any misleading information. So please take this as entertainment and not as medical information.

Love this for up-and-coming brands. When everyone in the beauty industry is going in one direction going with flow, you do a 180 and come out with a new idea to help others. Well done to you and Krave Beauty for getting to where you are, in a position to not trample on others on your way up but helping them along the way.👏🏽👏🏽

Hi Liah! Being the only shareholder of a company gives such a feeling of liberation and not having to report to higher ups is truly the best. That's because I experienced it and its not fun. I own and run small online business part time and I love it and the experience has been remarkable and rewarding because it's not full on capital-driven. Thanks so much for this knowledge on shareholders and venture capitals liah!

I m so glad that in my skincare journey I discovered Liah esp during time when 10 step routine was going around and I almost damaged my skin barrier. I went thru a tough battle with ache and her videos were just the right info and direction I needed. I would highly recommend her channel for skincare beginners. I m so glad to see her launch her own brand and the direction they are headed in is so amazing to watch. I feel sincerity and honesty, and an undying passion for ethical, sustainable, and producing great products. This video was informational as well. Thank you for always working hard and stepping in the right direction, in times highly needed.

Minute 6 - 6:36. Awesome if you're going to exit to a larger company that has the same values, but some of these brands with great ethics just sold themselves out to animal testers. 😔💬 Liah, you're a BOSS in all caps. I'm so glad you're doing this!!!!!! Also, I hope your engagement is going great.

I am not an entrepreneurial and will probably never be one in my entire life but I love watching this informative video! Congrats on the venture launch and watching this video reminded me of the simulation game I did in one of my business class in college.. in order for my company to gain a profit I had to launch a product every year..it made me question is this really the only way for me to make a profit? I am glad I got to play the game because it got me questioning so many things but all in all it was a great experience and I slightly wish all my other business classes did a simulation game. Keep on teaching me many lessons Liah, I really appreciate it.

Sucks that tatcha, YTP, Paula's Choice, and farmacy we're all bought by big conglomerates that are not ethical or cruelty free. As a very conscious consumet I don't support businesses that aren't cruelty free and this includes their parents company. As years pass my list gets shorter and shorter.

People are mad everywhere obsessed with money, they don't realize that just a few centuries ago the concept of working for money is odd. I just read a history book. Looking back, I thought capitalism is a good thing because I can't imagine a life where it centers to the landlords. But now I'm not sure

another reason why it kind of sucks to see local businesses acquired by national conglomerates is the commitment to that business' geographic base. that company is then no longer committed to serving the original community's needs, staffing those people, and providing that personal connection. for example, bartell's drugs in seattle was recently bought up by rite aid, and so now there are fewer local pharmacies that we know are putting money back into the community. this is very cool liah, im looking forward to what comes out of it!

Something that more companies should include in their ethical and sustainable brand models is sustainable livelihoods for their workers. Good wages and benefits, health and safety, and a voice in decision-making through unionization make workers lives and their communities stronger and healthier. I would love to see Krave and Press Reset Ventures include this in their work. Please let me know if it is already included and/or reach out for more brainstorming!

Europe is not really interesting to a lot of brands. Maybe because of the strict EU regulations that make everything for some brands much more expensive and at the end they opt against it. I've asked krave on their instagram a while ago and the answer was really unclear. So I guess Europe is not an option, at least not in the near past. In my personal opinion.

Liah, congratulations on the announcement. It sounds like a very interesting approach to take given your focus and I'm sure there are a number of companies that will benefit from your involvement compared to working with the average angel investors. If you get the time, I'd love to hear you speak more about the difference between innovation vs. unnecessary releases. From what I've heard in the past, I believe you've tried to develop products that fill a perceived gap in the industry rather than a gap in your product portfolio. As a result I do believe your products have aged very well. That said, seeing how far the industry has come in the last decade or two it seems inevitable that there will come a time when existing products become become dated compared to where they could be with a reformulation, so what factors do you base your decision on regarding reformulation timing? Additionally for situations where a product was unique at launch but the market has since become saturated and a product requires an update, do you discontinue a line or rerelease an improved version to support the existing user base? I'd also be curious as to how you balance a decision regarding whether to offer a variety of products for people with vastly different skin needs vs. offering a more limited lineup that may result in some people not finding what they need within the brand. For clarity just in case any of the above comes off as pessimistic, please know this is legitimate curiosity as I know these things are seldom black and white easy decisions and accordingly wouldn't expect definitive answers so much as an explanation regarding the analysis. I greatly respected your explanations regarding package sustainability and your desire not to use packaging that appeared on its face more sustainable, but wasn't in practice due to carbon emissions, recycling limitations and other factors.

Just an fyi criticizing capitalism doesn’t mean blaming the actions of companies with a blanket “its capitalism”. Its more about criticizing a system that incentivizes the behaviours of share holders, and incentivizes the consolidation of any individuality in any industry under massive conglomerates like loreal Nestle etc.

It isn't! Fundamentally, capitalism can encourage innovation and reward hard work. But it's the 'unconscious' capitalism model that's been criticized where corporates have been maximizing profits at all costs

@@LiahYoo I do appreciate the reply, as I wasn’t expecting one and just wanted to offer my perspective. I hear what you’re saying, and there are success stories for sure. However, if it’s NOT a systemic incentive structure that causes corporations to behave the way they do (ie. maximizing profits at any cost) then what is the incentive for that behaviour? Is it human nature? Imo no, but thats a philosophical argument. Anyways, what I’m getting at is theres not room everyone to have a success story under capitalism and no one becomes a billionaire ethically, and any system that rewards behaviours like those of many corps (ie. garment factory workers, environmental destruction) with success MUST be criticized and questioned. As a sociology major, i criticize systems. And capitalism just so happens to be the one i live in. I do look forward to ur ventures tho, the best we can do in an unethical system is try our best to be ethical.
