What message are the activists trying to get across? | DW News
Protesters threw soup at the glass-protected "Mona Lisa" in the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday.
In a video of the stunt, two women can be seen splashing orange-colored soup on the artwork while one of them shouts: "What's more important - art or the right to healthy, sustainable food? Our agricultural system is sick. Our farmers are dying at work."
A spokesperson from the Louvre confirmed to DW that the painting, which is encased in bullet-proof glass, had not been damaged.
They added that the room housing the "Mona Lisa" had been reopened and everything at the museum had returned to normal.
The activists were from the French organization "Riposte Alimentaire" (Food Response), which issued a statement saying the protest aimed to highlight the need to protect the environment and sources of food.
The group called for a system to be put in place that gives people better access to healthy food while providing farmers with a decent income.
It comes as French farmers stage protests demanding better pay, simplified regulations, and protection against cheap imports. For days, angry farmers have been blocking roads with their tractors across the country, and some have pledged to converge on Paris on Monday.
New Prime Minister Gabriel Attal promised "decisions" would be made in the coming weeks to address farmers' concerns.

Many artworks in museums are currently unprotected. Ramping up security and re-framing everything will ramp up ticket prices. Large format pieces are impossible to protect anyway. Much of the art shown is loaned from private collections that can simply recall it. The main costs for the museum are the employees, mostly security guards, and the insurance premiums, if both of these costs go up, it hits hard. Even large, world famous museums only have the money to re-frame or restore a few pieces per year, but they want to rotate through a large volume of pieces to show a wider spectrum. So we get to see less art at higher ticket prices.

This is dumb, i hate it. Gallery-grade glass, the kind that is virtually invisible under the right lighting conditions, is super thin and fragile, it protects against UV and dust and spittle. Strong glass that withstands actual force is not invisible. I want to appreciate art without having to go through airport-like security and without having my view diminished by strong glass. In the attack on Vincent van Gogh they almost broke the glass by touching it with the metal can, and damaged a 200 year old original wooden frame.

Exactly, the more we "listen" to vandalism, hooliganism, extremism, the more they get empowered to continue.
There are a number of scientific and technological innovations which have allowed for rapid growth in crop productivity, particularly in the second half of the 20th century. None of these had a more dramatic impact than the ability to produce synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. In fact, it’s estimated that nitrogen fertilizer now supports approximately half of the global population. In other words, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch - the pioneers of this technological breakthrough - are estimated to have enabled the lives of several billion people, who otherwise would have died prematurely, or never been born at all
A terrible event that will cause great harm to a good cause. The people who will be paying to protect more and more art, or not expose it to the public at all, are the ones with type of mind, the money and connections to help most. I hope their movement shuns these individual fools.
So every body who has an agenda can vandalize the Mona Liza?
