I agree.Both communicated continually with both sets of players making it perfectly clear who was in charge and what was expected of players to avoid penalties and maintain the flow and continuity of the game as best they could.The poor referees are the ones who talk very little and blow their whistles for infringements real or imagined without much verbal communication beforehand.Of the two, maybe Owens marginally for preference.

Owens and Barnes are at opposite ends of the referring spectrum. One knows the rules, is fair, and consistent. The other is the complete opposite.

Bryce Lawrence is a bad smell that never goes away.

My main praise for Barnes is that he has visibly improved over his career.

100% agreed. he's definitely shown massive growth over his career.

What makes Barnes unique is his unknown grip on World Rugby and his consistency at making bad judgements and decisions in referring.

I don't think I'll ever forget that match. The reason im still salty is that they knighted him afterwards in New Zealand and how EVERY single 50-50 call went against the Boks. Somehow a Kiwi referee officiating a match where they could prevent the stronger team from playing against his home nation will always have me questioning World Rugby's impartiality.

Wayne Barnes just can't handle a home ground. Handles pressure like the Titan submarine.

Wayne Barnes is a great referee,I have one complaint though he gives out too many penalties.

Agreed. He blows the pea out of the whistle . Apart from the most blatant missed forward pass in the QFs 2007 WC and maybe that he didn't award one penalty to the ABs in the same game for the entire 2nd half then I've almost moved on. No wait, we (NZ) have always been on the wrong side of the penalty count including the latest (100th) match on Saturday. I will move on when you retire !!! Congratulations by the way.

Has a great ability to cock up big games. Just because you ref a lot of games does not make you a good ref. His book reveals his bias against NZ. Barrister ego evident in his refereeing.

My 6 year old refs better than him - he is a bit immature at times on the field and TOTALLY out of his depth against Owen Farrell's confrontations! As a barrister I would never use him due to his "corporate" stance. He does not exude leadership to me.

Barnes is the most pedantic referee of all time. He treats players like school kids and constantly lectures players, he loves the spotlight and there's always controversial calls from him. The best referees are the ones you never hear about and Barnes ain't one of them.
